1509.0. "DECworld - Where to play?" by DENVER::DIGNAN (So much to read, so little time) Thu Apr 23 1992 22:56

I'll be in Boston over the weekend during DECworld. Where should I
    play golf? Recommendations?

George Wright in Hyde Park, or Ponkapoag #2 in Canton (you'll need a
    car for the latter...).

Ponkapoag #2? I can't believe you would recommend this course to
someone from out of town over other fine, well maintained courses
within a short driving distance from Boston. When I played there
last Monday, I was still walking over plywood planks in the middle of
the fairways, loosing my drives in the mud (in those same fairways),
repositioning my ball on the green so I wouldn't hit over old,
depressed cups or bare dirt, or dealing with other problems from the
worst maintained course in the state (or is that country?). I can deal
with this because the course is only 5 minutes from my house, the price
is right, and I've played it for the last 15 years. But let's give
suggestions for courses worth remembering for their beauty and
    playability, not their horrible conditions!

Besides George Wright, I would recommend Poquoy Brook in Lakeville,
Sandy Burr in Wayland, Ridder CC in Whitman, President's GC in Quincy,
Easton CC in Easton, just to name a few.

Putterham Meadows in Brookline was scheduled to have some facelifting
done this year. Can anyone comment on status?

I haven't played Ponkapoag in a long time, and I didn't realize it had
fallen into disrepair. Great Donald Ross layout - a real crime. I'll
second Poquoy Brook, and add Crystal Springs in Haverhill, and Far
Corners in Boxford. I used to LOVE Far Corners, but if you play it
back, and the wind blows - bring a lunch ! There's a 9-holer in Easton
called Pine Oaks that has some terrific holes too.

I would leave out Sany Burr because fairways overlap and you can get cold conked easy
especially with the tendency for slow play and poor course rangering.

Call Jesse Faulkner at the Boston Links Golf Shop at 617-261-0284. He
arranges outings and tee times for people from out of town. He can
include clubs and transportation if required. He also has access to
private clubs. I am not sure how pricey this gets though. Tell him you
    are from DECworld.

    Good luck.
