1499.0. "Masters Practice Round" by SAHQ::TROTTER () Wed Apr 08 1992 13:50

Attended the Tuesday practice round at the Masters. It rained most of
the day but it was still nice to be at Augusta National the shrine of
golf. Saw quite a few of the players but of course not all during the
    practice session.

Fred Couples looked confident and appeared to have his 3 wood working
to perfection. Tom Watson played with Fred as well as Manny Zeman the
amateur. Tom still needs help with his putter. Though the greens at
Augusta are among the toughest in the world.

Hale Irwin was hitting the ball very well firing it toward the pin with
    excellent accuracy.

Seve Balteseros, Jose Maria Olazabel, and Gary Player played together.
Seve was struggling. Jose looked real good great distance and beutiful
swing. Gary was giving Seve lessons walking down the 13 th fairway.

Nick Faldo practiced alone. He looked strong. He had the best shot at
#12 the par 3 that I saw all day. Also the best looking caddy (Only
    female caddy there).

Didn't see Jack Nicklaus as he usually plays late and alone so as not
subject other golfers to the crowds he attaracts. Heard he was firing
them out on the practice tee.

Arnold Palmer is a total gentleman and held in high regard at Augusta.
He still has his aggressive swing and charisma. Putting very well but
he know Augusta greens better than most.

John Daly, Didn't see him but heard he was booming them around the
course. To win at Augusta you have to play position into the greens to
leave a makeable putt. This will be a good test for John. A Masters
win would allow Daly to show he's not one tournament flash.

Hope this gives you a feel for the 92 Masters Tournament.

I read a recap in todays paper about Daly's practice round. Seems he
hit a 7 iron into #13 to 2 feet. He also hit it off the world on #15,
so far right his caddie didn't even look for it. They dropped a ball in
the rough, 5 iron middle of the green.

His attitude is he hopes to two putt all the 5's for birdie and keep
the bleeding to a minimum the rest of the way around. I believe he was
scheduled for a practice round with Jack today.

The net was raised 10 feet on the end of the range to handle John's
length. Story said John was firing 1 irons mid way up the net all day.
I think they said the net measured 250+. Jacks thinks he's got what it
takes. He hits the ball far and he hits it very high.

    Oooh but the greens!!

RE: .62 & .63

I found out this morning in USA Today that Tom is not playing..

Too bad, this was going to be his year.. I could feel it !!

RE: .64 (I think) Both Irwin and Leitzke are playing.

Now, since Tom is not playing, I'm going to go with

I unfortunately won't be going to any of the actual tournament rounds.
I was able in 1979 to go to the Thursday round of the Masters. That
was the day Tom Weiskopf took 13 strokes on number 12. That started my
appreciation of Augusta National and the Masters.

If anyone is interested in receiving information on the practice rounds
at the Masters, cards were handed out at the gate on Tuesday. Heres
    what they had on them.

The practice rounds are worth the trip to Augusta. They occur on
Monday, Tuesday, and Wedneday before the tournament. On Wednesday
there is a par 3 tournament on a par 3 course next to the actual
    course.
