1466.0. "price and ?foreclosure?" by JUPITR::OTENTI () Tue Mar 03 1992 13:46

word is out that the new Butternut Golf Course being built next
to Stow Acres is going to be $18.00 for a round. they are supposed
to open in June but there is no way they'll hold to that..maybe
    late-late fall..

also hear that Stow Acres itself is in very serious financial
difficulty..wonder what might happen if they can't keep up the
payments on that $13,000,000 loan they took out to buy the
    place!

1466.2Stow is getting beat up this winter...SNAX::ERICKSONWhat? Me Worry!Tue Mar 03 1992 18:138

I know someone who has played Stow six times already this year.
He said the course is getting hacked bad, there even letting you play
on the regular greens, instead winter greens.

Stow Acres (according to Walter Lankau, co-owner) is in NO financial
trouble. They have indeed allowed the public to play the entire course
(no temporary greens) all winter long, just as they have for the past
three years. The playing conditions at Stow last season were at an
all-time high....that is...the course has never been better.
Individuals may not agree, but the vast majority of comments made to me
(while I was out working on the course) were highly favorable.
Allowing people to play on frozen ground does not "hack up' the course.
Allowing play when the ground is thawing does. When the temps hit the
50's a week or so back, ownership shut down the course. They did have
a good many golfers go out prior to them shutting down, thus some
damage (minimal) may have occured. However, the previous day I played
at New Seabury and the conditions were identical....very sloppy!!!
Thus, it is not a case of Stow Acres screwing up anymore than it is
standard for many golf courses!! If you played Stow last summer and
appreciated the course conditions, there is no reason to be concerned
with the conditions for the coming season.

Before I sign off.....the comment about the Pages and current
ownership......I am very close to/with the Page Bros. and Bob Page, the
son and Superintendent. I also have worked for the current ownership
since their arrival. To suggest that the new owners have had a
negative impact on the course is, in my opinion, not only unfair, but
also untrue. I'm not sure what you look for in a golf course, but if
it is insults, long waits and no tee times, then you'd like the Stow of
yesteryear. If you prefer courteous treatment, tee times, rangers,
fairways *AND* rough....then you'll like the current Stow.

       Nelly,

What kind of impact did the use of carts have on the course
conditions and average playing time of a round at Stow? I
haven't played much down there at all in recent years and was
         just curious.

Re: .3 Nelly, I agree. I've played Stow for years, and I think it's improved
under the recent owners. I don't like the greens fees, and I hate the use
of power carts, but I realize these are financial necessities in these times.

The course is in great shape and improves every year. The tee time system
works well. Generally, the staff is neutral or friendly, which is a big
improvement. The range is better, and the pros are good.

I'm glad the course is open all year, and Stow Acres is an asset to the
entire area. Please tell whoever you know over there that I like it.
(and will gratefully accept free rounds anytime!)

    Nelly,

agree with your statement about Stow Acres. I even know what their
monthly "nut" is and believe me it's not out of reach of being
covered by cash and earnings. I also liked the Pages a lot, but
the course and greens last year were very good.

The driving range alone was a big "cash suprise " to them and the
golf school is a huge success .

Their pros do very well in local PGA tournaments ( Sal Ruggerio ,
Dan Diskin) and results in high recognition for Stow.

The banquet hall is booked for two years in advance just for
       wedding receptions.

They have applied to have the "1995" Mass Open or Mass Amatuer
       final played there ?

Butternut rumor is they will always be "$8- $10.00" under Stow ?

But from what I see will not open this Spring or year ??

One of their investments did not "play" , but financially had nothing
       to do with Stow.

Re: Butternut Farms G.C. (or will it be C.C.?),

The latest I've heard is that the greens fees will be $18.00 weekdays
and $25.00 weekends and holidays. I have not heard an estimate on when
it will be open for business since November....at that time they
expected the course to be playable in the August timeframe...but
weren't too keen on opening for the equivilant of 2-3 months, when...if
they waited 'till the Spring on '93, the root system would be much more
mature and capable of standing up to the quantity of play they hope to
    have.

I'll be over at Stow this weekend and I'll inquire as to Butternut's
    progress.

    Regards,

    Nelly
1466.9USCTR2::NAHEARNFri Mar 27 1992 17:5538
It took me more than a weekend, but.....

The latest estimate for the opening of Butternut Farms C.C. is the
Spring of 1993. Seeding is not scheduled to take place until June at
the earliest. Starting a lawn of any size during summer months is a
major chore....never mind an 18 hole golf course!!! There is virtually
no chance that Butternut will be open for business this calendar year!!

    As for a Stow update...........

A significant effort this winter has been made to bring some of the
tees back to their 'look' of thirty years ago!! That is, where
overgrown brush and/or overhanging limbs/trees were causing anguish
amongst golfers, they have trimmed or removed said impediments.
The brush on the left-hand side of the 3rd tee, North has been cleared
out.....along with many small trees between the tee and the 4th pond.
The view is much nicer now.....with a scenic overlook (for lack of a
better term) of the 4th green. You'll also notice what I believe to be
a major improvement on the 4th tee, North. Tree work there has now
allowed the golfer to reclaim the entire right side of the tee!! With
each passing year, you were able to use less and less of the tee as the
limbs extended farther over the tee. Similar work has been done all
    around the course.

Lastly (for now), many of you may have seen the work started last year
to change the greens watering system on the North. Some time early
this season, the sprinkler heads which have forever been in the middle
of the greens will be removed and a perimeter (sp?) system will be
used. This work is being done to further enhance Stow's chances of
being the host of the U.S. Publinx tourney in two or three years.
Organizers of the event toured Stow last season on the recommendation
of the NEPGA....and they were very pleased with all they saw...with the
exception of the sprinkler heads on the greens.

    That's it for now...

It's great that they are changing the sprinkler systems. Are similar changes
planned for the South course? It's a shame that they are clearing out the tee
areas...I guess I'm going to loose my stragegic advantage as a straight hitter.

    Re: -1,

I don't know for sure about the South course...I'd imagine that they
won't be changing the greens sprinkler systems on that side this
season...but will probably do so in the next season or two.

They had the grounds crew set up temporary greens yesterday (on ALL
holes) so that they can get the course 'open' sooner......they're still
at LEAST a week away from opening up 100%.

    FYI.......

Those of you familiar with Ian, the 19th Hole Manager, may be
interested to know that he had the misfortune of shooting himself in
the leg Friday night while attempting to dis-assemble his hand gun.
He was expected to be released from the hospital yesterday or
    today...

    That's it for now,

    Nelly,

What are the green fees going up to on both courses, this year?

    T
1466.13USCTR2::NAHEARNThu Apr 02 1992 17:0810
    T,

Greens fees will be $32.00.....both courses.....up $2.00 from last
year!! My brother starts this weekend (behind the counter at the 19th
Hole)......hopefully that means I'll be getting a call to start next
weekend out on the course!! My assumption is that they must be opening
up full tilt this weekend....with no temporary greens.

Stow is a great place to golf. I only wish they would
increase the time between tee-offs. When playing the
south course, we always seem to have a 15 minute wait on
the second hole, a 10 minte wait on 3, and then another
20 minute wait on 5. It doesn't help your game and is
really annoying considering the money they charge...
Maybe the front nine need to be redesigned, moving the
par 3 third hole or something...

The problem at Stow is that there are no starters times. Those are times
when no when is scheduled to tee off. At Stow when a group has a bad hole
or plays just too slow it backs up the group behind them, this continues
around the course until you get the situation you describe. Starter's times
would allow it to ebb and flow a little more. The other problem at Stow
is that both first holes are wide open (ok the tee shot on1 North can be
tight). So the group goes flying out the first hole & runs into the group
in front of them on #2 where you start to enter wooded territory.
