1458.0. "Tom Watson" by USPMLO::DESROCHERS () Fri Feb 21 1992 13:06

	Good grief!! Tom Watson shot 63 at San Diego - 9 under!!

	And he played the 7,000 yard South course so Faxon and Wren
	figure he has a 2 shot lead on their 63's.

	He missed the cut in Hawaii and stayed on and worked on his
	swing with Lanny Wadkins (losing high stakes Nassau's in the
	process). He said his swing is more upright, Lanny thinks
	he can win with it, and he has alot of confidence.

	He hasn't won in 5 years, the 63 was his lowest round in
	10 years, and he's 42.

	Can he win again? He's always been my favorite.

	Tom

1458.1Putting game!...JUPITR::PERCUOCOFri Feb 21 1992 13:126

    HMmmmmmmmmmm..... I've always liked the guy but his
    putting game had left him for awhile. I guess, maybe
    he's getting it back?! Golf is such a Headgame! :)

    Hi,

    	Personally , I'd love to see Tom win again. AFter watching the
    Masters last year and the excitement of his game, it would be
    great to see him more often. His game and personality is the
    mold of a legend.

    	Hopefully he'll be in the hunt again at Augusta !

1458.3Re-engineering a Golf GameAKOCOA::MULLINFri Feb 21 1992 15:568
    Just think of the news this would make if he can sustain this through
    the week and win - he gets his confidence back and could be in position
    to win another British Open - would the golfing world go crazy ??? Just
    hope the head stays in gear and the putter can re-work some of his old
    magic.

    	I can't imagine what must have been going thru Tom's
    	mind after his finish yesterday. He's got to be
    	questioning whether he'll ever win again.

    	Good for Johnny tho...

    In Tom Watson's defense, nobody was really putting the lights out
    yesterday. Conditions looked extremely tough with the wind. The 3-putt on
    16 was the killer. He was trying to make 3 and got over-aggressive and
    careless with a slick side/down-hiller.
    From then on he was 'snake-bitten'. IMO, his problem yesterday was a
    mental lapse.

    My hat is off to Johnny Miller who said it all: "The course was the
    real winner today".
1458.8USPMLO::DESROCHERSMon Feb 07 1994 14:266

    	Then he's been in a lapse for the last 10 years! Actually,
    	you're right about the course. No one broke 70 on Sunday
    	so his 74 wasn't too bad.

1458.9unbelievableUSDEV::BLAISDELLRick, dtn: 297-5077Mon Feb 07 1994 15:4911

        Considering the state of their putting games, it was miraculous
        that both were fighting it out for the win. I could hardly
        bear to watch as they both flinched their way through the back
        nine. Miller and Watson again though. Felt like a time warp!

        But then you had Dudley_pure_as_silk_putting_stroke_Hart three
        putt from 5 feet on 18, with a yippy Miller watching in horror.
        Miller's two putt was an act of pure courage.

    Hi ,

    	Yeah, normally I get that stressed out when I'M the one putting...
    But I was just as stressed watching both Watson and Miller praying the
    putts close.

    	What a great moment in golf... 1994 and Watson and Miller battleing
    it out at Pebble for a tour victory! Johnny Miller at Augusta once
    again ! I have never watched Johnny play, only old cuts they show from
    the past... It was truly a joy. I taped the final round and can
    gurantee I'll be watching that one for quite a few rewinds.

    I know I'm sounding like my old man, but if you never saw Johnny Miller
    play, you missed something.
    It's hard to imagine, but at one time, the commentator that we now
    know, was THE most dominating player around. At one point in the 70's he
    won 7 or 8 tournaments in 1 year. No one, not even Watson could come
    close. He fired darts at, and made, everything.
    '75 Masters, I think, him, Weiskopf and Nicklaus....a classic!!!!

    Anyway, it'll be good to see him in Augusta this year!!

1458.12He was brilliant.CTHQ::OCONNORMon Feb 07 1994 18:335
    I remember Johnny Miller hitting his four wood to the greens at the
    Phoenix Open in the seventies. They used to predict (in inches!) how
    close he was going to be. Truly amazing.

1458.13Johnny Miller FanCSOA1::RANKINMon Feb 07 1994 18:4119
    Living in Columbus Ohio I had the fun of following Johnny Miller a
    couple years at Miurfield for the Memorial. WoW what fun. I still
    remember some of the shots he made and how accurate he was.

    In my oppinion, he is THE BEST TV golf announcer alive today. He never
    holds back regardless of who he is critiqueing (sp). He tells it like
    it is and 99.9 % of the time he is right. I enjoy him correcting Jim
    Lampley.

    If there was someone that I could have been yesterday, it would have
    been Bryant G. He will be talking about that round of golf for the
    rest of his life. Oh, what an experience.

    Yesterday was the 1st time I ever saw Bryant keep his trap shut for any
    extended period of time. I gained a little respect for him.

    I think I'll rewind my tape and watch the last 4 holes again tonite!

1458.14NACAD2::NISKALAWhen will it all end?Tue Feb 08 1994 11:555
    	How did Arnie end up in the tourney? I presume he failed to make
    the cut, but I never saw a listing of his 2nd and 3rd round scores.
    He shot 69 in the 1st round but must have faded.
    	Also I presume Jack Lemmon failed to make the cut again in the
    Pro-Am portion... Jacobsen was his partner.

    What was the deal with the sea gull, or whatever it was, that Gumble
    hit? I turned on the set while he was still on the tee but after it
    happened. I didn't catch a re-run of the incident later on?

    Hi Joe,

    	I was in my teen years in the 70's ... I didn't even get into golf
    till I was 30+. Hearing stories about;

    	Miller,Hogan,Jones,Nelson,Nicklaus,Palmer,Watson,Seve etc.
    ... when they were burning it up is exciting and legendary golf. Wish
    they had some VCR tapes available showing these guys going at it !
    I'd buy the entire volume!

    	Every story I've heard about Johnny basically stated , in his
    prime he couldn't be beat by ANYONE.

    	Was he THAT good?

    	Great topic!

    Walta,

       JM's final round at the 197mumblesomething US Open (Oakmont, I
    believe) where he shot a 63, is considered to be one of the single
    greatest rounds of golf ever played by anybody. He put on a clinic that
    day from tee to green (and yes even putting) on what is considered to
    be one of the world's most difficult layouts.

       He was considered a somewhat streaky player who when he was "on",
    nobody could come close to (including Nicklaus). Where some of us
    can get into the "zone" for a couple of holes, he managed to ride
    them out for several weeks.

    	Well, finally it happened. Tom's been playing great most of the
    	year - but only on weekdays! With Duval finishing something like
    	bird, bird, eagle, par, bird, it was great to see Watson play 18
    	like he did. Can you possibly imagine what was going thru his
    	mind on that fast, downhill putt? Especially after watching Els
    	barely tap it from farther away.

    	On to the Open!!!
