Judging by all the fuss and attention Daly is getting despite only
winning one tournament, I would say John by quite a bit.

I would'nt agree, after watching Sandy Lyle consistently launching drives
350 yards plus. This has happened since he changed to the Wilson Whale
driver.During a recent pro-celebrity tourney he was driving thru a
green that was 355 yards away.Is Daly as consistent as Lyle ???

All I know is that Daly was consistently 20-30 yards longer off the
tee than Ian Woosnam during the Grand Slam event held late last year.
I always thought Woosnam and Lyle were about the same. Put the
same club in both their (Daly & Lyle) hands and I think Daly would win.

Is Daly as consistent as Lyle? Yes. They are both consistent at
     being inconsistent. ;^)

If stastics mean anything then the vote goes to John Daly...the tour
stastical leader in long drives last year and the leader again this
year. In order to lead in this category, you have to hit the
fairway...which means John is hitting fairways (not always the one he
is aiming at). He however is nowhere to be seen on the Greens in
Regulation or Putting stastics...those that help you win $$$. The guys
on the tour also rave about his length and hang time, few are raving
about Lyle, and most will talk about Couples, Woosnan or Love in the
next breath but never the same breath as Daly.

I think you'll find that the hole(s) used at a tournament to
measure distance on is usually wide open AND A BALL DOES NOT HAVE TO
BE IN PLAY TO BE MEASURED FOR DISTANCE.....

so one can be long off the tee but have no idea where it's going...

and in the few years I've played I have yet to see more than
a few who are long off the tee and accurate. Usually the long ball hitters
I've come across only have that in their bag, they can't do anything else..
no short game, no putting, no iron play...

it still comes down to learning the fundamentals so well
that they are second nature to you

years ago someone look at the statistical leaders in all
catagories over a period of time and there was only one name that
appeared over and over as being among the leaders consistantly in
distance AND accuracy...NICKLAUS...his advantage was that he could
hit it long and straight...not easy to do but like Hogan he had
absolute bedrock FUNDAMENTALS...

Daly is hitting to softer fairways, too.

Ok, some fuel for the fire...

Daly is obviously longer, thus the rave reviews. But he's not that much longer
than some of the other guys that have been mentioned here...and some that
haven't... Norman, to name one. Norman was #2 in distance stats last year. Yep,
he had a horrible year by his standards, but still...he is long.

Anyway, here's my point. Norman, and Love have SHORTENED their swings in order
control their drives. The only thing Daly shortens is the distance between the
head of the driver and the ground on his backswing! How long would those guys,
and others, be if they didn't leave anything in the bag and just cranked it up?
Hell, Nicklaus use to rave about Norman. Other's even raved at Weiskopf when
he'd "let it loose". I'd even give a vote to Jumbo Ozaki. On the driving
range at Augusta last year he and Woosnam put on a show...with Ozaki the EASY
winner in distance...and he had a bum shoulder to boot!

Bottom line is they are ALL amazing...Unbelievable. Good God, Boom-boom's length
with his irons is mind boggling...and Love, and Norman, and,..and, and..

I'd personally still give Daly the nod...

PS. Ever seen super skinny Jody Mudd crank it? A true long knocker when he
needs/wants to be.

I don't want to prolong any controversy on who is longer, but I did get
a chance to see John Daly play. We had the Greater Erie Charity Golf
Classic Monday and Tuesday. John Daly was the defending champ (his
first pro tournament win) so he was here along with some other
recognizable names from the tour. Here are a few stories and some
    perceptions.

Daly arrived about 2 hours before his tee time, but 45 mins before his
tee time he had yet to make to the range. (Signing autographs no
doubt) I didn't see him get there (having lunch before we walked the
course) but I did go back and he was hitting a fews "drives" for the
fans. He spent maybe 20 mins warming up. (as opposed to 1 hour for
    the other tour pros)

He snapp hooked his first tee shot out of sight so I don't know how far
it went. On the third hole (he's 2 over at this time) my daughter and
I walked down the 3rd fairway because we couldn't get to the tee.
There were some club pros playing in front of him, and they were
hitting their second shots. They don't hit much farther that I do, so
I walked down another 40 yards or so to wait. Mike Donald hit his
drive and it landed about 10 yards from us. (no roll the course was
soaked) Daly hit his drive and as I saw it coming out, I grabbed my
daughter saying it's coming right at us (BIG SLICE). Well it hit the
tree we were under maybe 40 feet up. That's right, 10 yards after Mike
Donald's tee shot landed, Daly's was still 40 feet in the air. You
figure out how far he hits it. We didn't follow him after that because
the crowd was too big not because I feared for my life.... really!!!!!!
The point is Daly is LONG and he will take whatever time and/or steps
to sign autograohs and please the crowd.

His putting is weak now. I watched him warm up on Tuesday on the
practice green His stroke is very good. Soft hands, crisp stroke.
Looks to me like he's moving his eys when he putts causing the head and
shoulders to move resulting in a poor putt. I did see his tee shot on
Tuesday. This is a Donald Ross course (the weakest I've ever seen) and
Ross has a habit of putting a tree overhanging the fairway on one side
so that the big hitters have to lay up of hit away from the tree toward
the real trouble. Most of the tour pros hit it up the left side and
were even with the tree. (Most of us would never notice the tree)
Daly took his tee shot right at and OVER the tree with a little draw so
he was in the middle of the fairway.

Next time a perspective on the tour pros and how they hit and play the
    game!
