1406.0. "John D. @ W.C." by TOLKIN::HOGAN () Mon Dec 23 1991 17:27

    Hey what happened to John Daily at the World Championship last week?
    Roger Twitbell gave him a verbal lashing about his on and off course
    behavior. I have heard nothing of this off course behavior thing has
    anyone else? I understand he was not having any fun this past weekend
    and snapped his putter over his knee and proceeded to shoot 51 on the
    front nine, sign an incorrect score card, take the DQ, 50 k and hit
    the road. This not a good thing. This kid is looking a gift horse in
    the mouth big time. Some other great players were also having a tough
    time out there but sucked it up and finished. John, John,John this is
    no way to act. Boy if I walked off the course everytime I was playing
    poorly I would never finish 9 holes. Johnny Walker is probably a
    little upset with Johnny Daily. Thanks for the 50k...see ya.

1406.1Does he still get the 50k?SNAX::ERICKSONWhat? Me Worry!Mon Dec 23 1991 18:204
Does he still get the 50k minimum? I know that he shot an 87 but signed
for an 86 thus the DQ.

    According to my morning paper, Daly did not show up in the earnings
    column. I'm not sure he got paid.

    Story has it he shot 87 and signed for 86. That included a 51 on the
    back. He did break his putter and finished the round putting with his
    wedge and driver.

    	According to the telecast, he got 50k for finishing last
    	even tho he dq'd. He'll learn from the backlash. But
    	don't forget, he had a year like he never expected.

    	Lanny's broke a few clubs, Crenshaw hit his head, Calc and
    	Green hit anything in their way, Walrus is always pissed.

    	No problem, he'll be fine.

    Don't get me wrong. I am in no position to give him a hard time. I have
    no idea what it must be like to be under that kind of pressure. I mean
    I have put a few clubs into orbit with nothing on the line. I got
    pissed the other day cause I couldn't roll a three footer into a dixie
    cup in my livingroom. I'll never get it through my head that everything
    breaks towards the bathtub.

    HI Pete,

	'Gentle' Ben Crenshaw broke his putter on the 6th hole of a
	Ryder cup singles match and putted with his one iron the rest of the
	way. (Since he IS Crenshaw, he only lost 1 up...)

    I agree with Desrochers...the kid had a great year and is being hounded
    by the media and expectations of a great tourney every time out. I
    suspect he was not happy being in Jamaica mahn and decided to pack it
    in early mahn. Or maybe he is a Seagrams mahn, mahn.

    Let's see how he hits them in a few weeks at La Costa. That will his
    beginning of the new year.

    Good luck to him, because he will need some inner strength to
    perservere thru the Roger Twibles of the world next year.

1406.8Gentlemen, please!ODIXIE::RHARRISonly one shot, please!Thu Dec 26 1991 14:4116
    Everybody is human, even Daly. I certainly hope people will quit
    putting him high on a pedestal all the time. So he hits the ball real
    long, he came in last place at the T of C on the big island, remember.
    Golf is a mind game. Sometimes you lose and golf wins. That's the
    GAME of it. Personally, I like Daly, but he is not my mentor in golf.
    My mentor is of course Jack, and the controversial Greg Norman. Both
    gentlemen on the course, and off.

    Remember what golf stands for: Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden
                                   G         O     L      F

    Not trying to start anything, because I do not believe in ladies
    forbidden, but the G is for gentlemen.

    I got pissed on New Year's Eve, but I wasn't in the least bit upset!

    Another one from the American-British dictionary.
