1335.0. ""The BEAR roars at the Seniors"" by NEMAIL::GLASS () Wed Jul 31 1991 19:00

    The former Ohio State University BUCKEYE and Arlington High School
    GOLDEN BEAR is really some golfer!
    To bad Lee wasn't around to "talk" Jack into a new course record.

1335.1the Golfer of the Century...TRLIAN::GORDONThu Aug 01 1991 10:554
    from the small part of the playoff I saw it was a clinic on shotmaking
    by the "greatest golfer of the century"...of course the rains that
    softened the greens helped but you still gota hit the shots and
    Nicklaus left no doubt he can still do that at times...{;^)...
1335.2Never know what Jack could have doneCHRLIE::HUSTONThu Aug 01 1991 12:4332

    Re "the rains helped"

    Not really sure about this, sure he started hitting at the flag since
    the greens started holding. But the rain delay came after 5 1/2 holes.
    Through 5 Nicklaus was -3, his drive on 6 was in the fairway.

    His three put on 6 could be attributed to the rain:

    1) Approach shot left short, all week you had to do this so it would
       bounce up close. He did it again and it stopped where it landed.

    2) 1st putt is a long one. He leaves it quite a bit short. He had to
       go over a hill, then down the other side. This type of putt caused
       nightmares all week. He hit it hesitantly again, this time on
       a green that was alot slower than all week, hence he left it short

    3) Missed second putt, result of missing 1st by along ways.

    True the rain helped by softening the greens, but he was -3 after 5,
    we will never know what would have happened.

    As for shot making, sorry Chi Chi is king. How about his hole 15
    drives, 5 days in a row he hits low hooks to thread it through the
    narrow opening between the bunker and rough, 5 times in a row. And
    what about his Sunday afternoon approach shot to 18, hits a big hook
    and gets the ball to bounce left at the front of the green, went
    exactly like he told the caddy it would. That guy can do more with
    a golf ball than anyone around, amazing.

re: bob

I guess I was missinformed...I was refering to the fact that it also
had rained the night before quite heavily....and the rain delay just
made the greens even softer....

	can't argue with the above so maybe I should have said Nicklaus
was/is more consistantly a shotmaker....Chi Chi's "trick shots" are
great but under the pressure of competition over the long haul tend to
break down more often....{;^)...

1335.5"More margin for error or controversy"NEMAIL::GLASSThu Aug 01 1991 16:098
    Good advertisement for McGregor since both of them use the irons at a
    minimum. Jack sticks with the JNP irons and Chi Chi uses the CGs.

    No matter what type of style or shot making skill, the company wins
    with this free advertisement.
    The Senior PGA tour also comes out a big winner in such a friendly
    match as this one was and with the two great personalities(only wish
    it were Orville instead of -----. He is the greatest ball stricker!).
1335.6Trivino best since Hogan...TRLIAN::GORDONThu Aug 01 1991 16:4813
    re: .5

    everyone has their opinion but...from the tour itself I have seen
    the following or heard it in interviews numourous times to assume
    it is correct:

    	since Hogan retired, Lee Trivino is the best ball stricker
    on the tour...I heard this in interviews with Nicklaus as well
    as other tour pros...and they should know...at least some of them
    were around when Hogan was...

    for what it's worth
1335.7Nelson/Hogan/Trivino/?????TRLIAN::GORDONThu Aug 01 1991 16:513
    by the way...before Hogan Byron Nelson was considered by his peers
    as the best ball stricker on the PGA tour...when he retire Hogan was
    then considered the best...
1335.8NEWPRT::JOHNSON_DOThu Aug 01 1991 18:468
    Nit Pick..

    Of course this argument is founded in personal choice, but,...are we
    talking of "stricking" a ball or "striking" a ball. I play a lot of
    golf and I know a "stricker" when I see one. As far a "striking" the
    ball....I am strictly a "stricker".

    right but personal choice of your peers is fairly persuasive..

    ah short circuit in brain...you got a point...isn't a stricker in
    in some other sport or does it even exist..??guess we both wnet
    to the same typing(hunt n peck in my case)school...{;^)....

Bobby Jones was to have said while observing the young Nicklaus. He plays a
game of which I am not familiar.

1335.12What does it mean?MAST::FITZPATRICKJuuuust a bit outside.Fri Aug 02 1991 16:463

1335.13good question...TRLIAN::GORDONMon Aug 05 1991 12:5811
    re: a good ball striker....

    after Hogan won the us open in 51 his 1 iron was stolen, years later
    it was returned, one of the ways he knew it was his was because
    there was a small shinney spot the size of a dime in the exact center
    of the clubface....now I don't know "what is a good ball striker" but
    to me, at the pro level they all put the ball in the center of the
    clubface most of the time...a good ball striker will do it ALL of the
    time.....not on the toe...not inside..but in the center EVERY time...

1335.14CSC32::J_KLEINWed Aug 14 1991 01:427
    A good ball striker is also one that can 'work' the ball; left to
    right, right to left, hit it high, low etc.

    Trevino may be a better ball striker than Nicklaus, but Jack is
    certainly the better golfer, records speak for themselves.

1335.15CSC32::J_KLEINWed Aug 14 1991 02:074

    I forgot to add, that the reason they can 'work' the ball is
    because they 'strike' the ball so purely that they put ALOT of
    spin on it.

    I can work the ball left to right, right to left etc... Just not at
    will. 8*) 8*)
