My golf skills had better be better than my language skills or I'm
going to lose a lot of golf balls.

Wear whatever is appropriate for September in New Hampshire.

    See you there!

Are we playing the blues or the whites? I recommend blues as you need to use
irons from some of the whites. What time does it get dark 23 September as
the playing time will be at least five hours even with a scramble format? Are
we eating before or after we play?

I would suggest that people play the course before the tournament if possible in
order to learn about the layout first hand.

I understand that the course record dropped to 74 from 75 for the blues. The
white record is 73.

1308.6New Starting timeMRKTNG::LUCIANORICH LUCIANO @TTBThu Jul 11 1991 17:284
On the advice of the previous note:
....we will start the shotgun at 10:30 AM
....we will be eating after the round
....Blues vs. Whites vs. Reds (to be determined prior to play)

1308.14Times???PENUTS::ETHERIDGETue Sep 17 1991 13:585
I have a question about the starting times, is this a shot gun start or
will we have tee times? or do you want us all there at 10:30?

    Thanks iv advance.

1308.15More on the course - 45 min. from rt3/xit 7AKOCOA::BREENBill Breen Ako2-3 244-7984Wed Sep 18 1991 15:0729
Drove to Shattuck and forked over 17.50 for 9 - used the money from by
bxc league scramble winnings for the extra 6.50 over GM's 11 bucks.
(found money if I ever saw it).
Barely got 9 in since I didn't reread directions and thought course was
on 202. By the way at the 2.2 mile out of town you turn right and
course is on the left - nice people running it. There is a restaurant
downtown (Jaffrey Village rest.) for those interested. Also, made much
better time on the way back to NH going north and picking up 101 east than
traveling out on 119 on the way in.

Course is interesting and difficulty is in hitting various landing
areas. Ironicly (sic) the big hitters may have an edge more from the
whites than blues as from blues that would be using same landing area
as shorties whereas from whites they can have their designated-Daly try
for an advantage. Distances will be deceiving both from tees to
hazards (inevitably about 225-250 from tees) and from 150 markers and
    from elevated tees.

A little distressed as a yudeman reader to find as many unrepaired ball
marks and divots (none of the former mine unfortunatly, many of the
larger latter excavations were though). Inspired by Hogan and Varley &
Co I diligently repaired and replaced though night was falling quickly
and I distinctly heard what could be none other than a large bear off
in the woods. ?\ (that is note jargon for a slight bow).

I believe these greens will hold balls nicely even if they completely
    dry by Monday.

      re: 15 Bill

Which nine did you play? I can't think of any holes that a big
hitter could provide a significant advantage. All the 150 markers
are reachable by short hitters hitting from the whites. Two of the
three par 5's are reachable with some length off the tee but other
than that, there isn't much. The key will be keeping in the short
grass and having your putting touch.

I haven't been to Shattuck yet, but definitely will get there this
fall. From what I've heard from friends who have played it, I would
suggest hitting a club off the tee on par 4's that will get you
to the 150 yard marker in regulation. On par 5's, try to do the same
thing in 2 shots, selecting conservative clubs (Driver, 9 iron to the
150 ain't conservative. On this track, after you hit the driver you
might be reloading it again). I imagine too, that if you get in
trouble, just pitch it out - ALWAYS. Don't mess with recovery shots.
This is probably a course where you could play with 3 clubs and a
putter, force yourself not to take chances, and end up better than a
lot of guys with 14 clubs. I hope to hear some great "War Stories."

    Rick,
I played front. #1 is dogleg left with landing area on both sides
of hazard; I expect some will try to draw a drive into landing area in
    front of green.
#6 par 5 could be reached in two if a drive is
faded into 2nd landing area else it is a 6 or 7 off the tee. From
first landing area the green is reachable but difficult (very) to hit.

#8 would have been the opposite as it is 190 to
landing area off the tee I'd guess with blues another 30 back but it
will be to your advantage to get out far and right to come in directly
    to the hole.

Jack was given the advice that I agree with and you also
    I'd guess,
that is, bring 4/5 wood, a long iron and 5 thru all the pitching wedges
you can stuff in the bag. Also, a hot putter. I cannot really think
of 1 hole on 1-9 that a driver should be used from the whites.
However, for the scramble, if one is on the fairway then I think there
are several where the driver might be used to advantage. But the ball
would have to be moved as well as hit a long way.

The point I was trying to make was that from the blues it would be
a driving accuracy contest not a driving length contest. If it is
difficult to pick out holes that a longgg drive would be an advantage
from the whites then I cannot think of 1 hole where from the blues
you could drive over the first hazard.

No time for a hole-by-hole description Jim, but I'll enter the
scorecard. The card is skimpy. No course ratings or slope. I'll
crosspost this in the Shattuck Inn note.
