1307.0. "The Zebra is back!!" by MAIL::SCHULZ () Wed Jul 10 1991 16:46

Recently the Zebra putter from Ram Golf is making a big comback. I
would be interested in any comments by Zebra users.

    Thanks!

I bought one the same week Ray Floyd used it on the nationally
televised tournament. Cost me $40 then (I guess about 10+ years ago).
Used it 2 rounds, been sitting in my closet since (I went back to my
trusty 8802, not reproduction or copy). The only noticeable change I
see is the availability in different colors. If you like mallet type
    putters, you might like'em.

If you're in a market for putters, try TA Zebra. I've been using it for
about a year and a half and I like them. (but still looking for THE
putter. so far my 8802 and Zebra come closest out of 30+ putters I own)

Ok, who has the most putters in their closet ? How about drivers ?

Putter blades and putters are overrated...
Like the golf swing, it's the grip and stroke that count..
And I'm starting to believe "fat grips" on the putter feel
better.. had 4 birds yesterday using my kid's "fat " grip..
Tiger shark super fat grips. He got it from the pro where
       he works.(Belmont Country Club).
think fat..it really "relaxes" the hands and takes out
           that "wristy" feeling..
      now I'll three putt 4 in a a row !!

I have following drivers in my closet:

    1 Persimmon Lynx driver
6 custom taylored (modified) Powerbuilt persimmon drivers circa 1970's
1 Royal laminated head with graphite shaft driver
1 Mizuno black turbo II driver
1 custom made Ryobi-Toski 8.5 deg. metal head with NOVUS II
      boron-graphite shaft

for a total of 10. And I'm currently using Daiwa Exceller wide-body
composite head/shaft driver to make 11 in my posession.

1307.7P-squared is legal now !RAYBOK::COOPEROne-ton Tomato !Wed Jul 10 1991 21:197
I have the old "illegal" p-squared Tiger Shark grip on one of
my "closet" putters. Tiger Shark changed the the profile a
little bit and the new P-squared is legal. The front is flatter
and the top of the grip is the same width as the middle so there
    is no "waist" now.

    Hackman,

Just found a new outsource for the putter glut. Tratded a brother
-in-law a Bullseye that he took a fancy to for his Apple II, color
monitor and 8 boxes of software. My kids get much more use out of the
Apple than I did out of the putter. He of course was getting a new PC
for work. Win/win and I have room for another putter....maybe a
    Zebra.?

Sounds like a person after my own heart. I have two drivers in my bag
at all times. Use one like a two wood. Have several others of vintage
variety Rob't Trent Jones autograph persimmons that I don't use. Just
gave another away and still have a graphite/graphite I can call on when
I am not hitting the ball crooked enough.

Sounds like we could have fun on the course based on your entries in
this notesfile. We seem to share same views on many things. INCLUDING
slow play. I used to be able to figure out what time I'll be home based
on my tee times (tee times + 4 hours + driving time) LONG time ago, but
    now it's a all-day event.

Southern Calif. used to be my backyard when I was living in Las Vegas.
I'm currently in Dallas and I MISS WEST! Next time I have a chance to
be in CA, I'll let you know...may be we could sneak in a round.

1307.11The Zebra's BackDPDMAI::VENEZIOnever drink SLICE while golfingThu Jul 11 1991 18:3922
I just switched back to my Zebra after years of putting with an Arnold
Palmer AP14. I have had some success and have eliminated the three
putts completely. The Zebra I own is the more upright version and it
has me centered over the ball, very square to the target.

It's probably the alignment more than it is the putter, but it's
working and it will stay in my bag. I play a course that has very fast
greens. Similar I bet to the speed played on tour. That was the reason
for taking my Zebra out of retirement.

I believe it's healthy to switch once a year, just for a new feel. Of
course you would only switch when things turn bad. For some of us
that's more than once a year!!!!

I bet I own a dozen putters, a dozen drivers and three sets of irons.
Two sets of the irons are on the collectors list. (Hogan Producers, and
Tommy Armour Silver Scots) They NEVER leave the closet.

Hideshi, have you considered placing a neon Nevada Bob's sign on your
roof? You have a better collection than my pro shop.

    RE: .11

Hi Ken. As a matter of fact I once had a small Nevada Bob sign. I met
Bob, his wife and his brother John when they opened their first shop.
It was about big as their indoor practice net (may be little bigger). I
bought several sets from them and after awhile they started to give me
great deals. Like When Mizuno Black turbo II came out it was about $190
    - $200 they sold both driver & 3 wood for $120. And when they first
started to make Prima clubs, one of the store manager had me try a set
for few rounds, when I asked how much he said "Well, it's used
now...I'll sell them for $90". Can't beat that.

Now that I live in Dallas I can't get anymore deals like these.

P.S. BTW when are you going to invite me to your C.C.?

    Lessons

You may be right, but the one thing about lessons that I found
disheartening. They teach a specific method, whetther it fits your
body type, skill, practice time etc. They also do nothing to help you
understand which clubs, shafts, lie, are best for you. They try to
turn everyone into "Iron Byron" whe most of us just want to know why
the ball went dead right or never got higher that 4 inches off the
ground. I found that the best lessons I ever took started with a
description of the different swing paths, grips and why you would use
them. This along with some practice helped more than the lessons I
    have taken from other sources.

I buy a lot of different clubs ( driver, putter, wedge) because I like
the way they look or feel. I haven't found a pro whose looks I like so I
haven't taken any lessons yet. I also like to buy chrome dip-stick
handles for my car so it goes faster. Fuzzy dice are credited with
a 10% horsepower boost also. But the 12 pound ball is my total key to
    success.

    Re:

Mad Hacker, you would be surprised at the performance improvement when
you get the clumps of mud off of your clubs...at least off the face of
the club...if you leave it on the backs it helps with the perimeter
weighting. If you add a little doggie with the head that bobs and
you will get better sound from your stereo. I use golf hats on the
rear deck to improve fuel efficiency myself.

yes, Tiger Sharks are now stamped "USGA approved" at the butt end.

I cut my 22 year old Wilson Pro Line by an inch , since the
"Tiger Shark" grip made it feel "distant" from the putter head..

..now I have a better "putter head -to-hands-" feeling.
Which is the exact opposite theory of the extra long"seniors" putters !

    RE.Zebra Putters

I have changed putters on many occassions, and have once traded in 12
old putters for 1 new one and a Pro Bag.

Since investing in a Zebra over 15 months ago, I have not thought about
changing it. The wide base makes me "Stroke" the ball, keeping it low
to the ground on the backswing and imparting Topspin on the follow
    through.

If you don't like the look of it, at least have a go on the practice
green, to get yourself a smooth stroke going for your old faithfull.

Just got a promotion in the mail from Cadillac which says if I test
drive a new Caddy, they'll give me a new Zebra putter. Anyone else
gotten this? Anyone tried it? Is it a real Zebra?
