1306.0. "The 'OPEN'" by FLYWAY::BELL () Wed Jul 10 1991 13:03

    OK so we are in the run-up now to the 'OPEN' at Royal Birkdale. I
    understand it's a lovely course, and naturally like all links courses,
    it will get very very tough if the wind starts to blow. As this appears
    not to have been a very good summer (yet) in UK, we have to assume that
    there will be at least some days of rough weather. Therefore my feeling is
    you have to look for the possible winner among those players who still
    play well in rough weather, and have experience of links golf. Not a
    very big list I think. The names that come to mind are Faldo, Nicklaus,
    Watson, Langer and Stewart. Ballesteros, Woosnam, Norman and Olazabal don't seem to
    respond too well to bad conditions (as far as I can remember), so my
    guess is that the winner will come from the first five names I
    mentioned. My long-shot choice is Sandy Lyle who is close to being back
    to his best, and when he is in form, he's awesome. What do you think ?

    Faldo to successfully defend.

    Payne Stewart will be his biggest threat. Of all the Americans coming
    over he's the only one capable of winning the biggest prize in golf.

    The smart money's on Seve...he's on a winning curve...Sandy Lyle will
    be a contender, but his bottle will go towards the final stages,
    assuming he makes the cut that is.
    	There won't be an American in the top 3...!!!

1306.7probably Seve !SIOG::OGRADYThu Jul 11 1991 07:2417
    Remember that every winner at Birkdale has been an American or an
    Australian !

    I think the key is the weather. If it is fine then there is a big
    chance of a surprise winner ( Calcavecchia for example ). However,
    the weather looks poor of late, and the course is an extremely tough
    par 70 this year. The winning total will be around 5-6 under.
    This gives the par makers a great chance.

    I would think that the eventual winner will come from the following
    list...Ballesteros, Woosnam, Faldo, Olazabal, Norman ( yes, I know he's
    on a downer at the minute ).

    Sandy Lyle is definitely a contender but I don't think he'll win.
    Likewise with Watson, even though he's my sentimental pick.

    Langer ( He may be back on track)
    Azinger (The best hope for the US)

Paul Azinger and Scott Hoch have just pulled out of the Open. The Zinger has
been advised to rest for 6 weeks following surgery on his shoulder. This means
that he will also miss the PGA in August. Scott Hoch's withdrawal is surrounded
with some controversy -(at least according to my report). Apparently he has
had a disagreement with the sponsors (or his sponsor).

Payne Stewart has to be the best US bet for the championship, but he wont be
able to stay with Seve. Outside pick is Sandy Lyle.

	Nick Faldo - He's great at making Pars!!!
	Seve Ballesteros - Playing great right now!!!
	Greg Norman - One bad 9 in 4 days last week, or he was a winner

	Fred Couples - Confidence is high, and has the distance into the

	Payne Stewart - Great clutch player and plays well in Majors.

    My money's on Woosnam......four steady rounds at the Scottish open will
                               give the wee man the perfect springboard for
                               the BIG one.

	What a smart betting man could the do, would be:

      BET       Player       ODDS           Winning Payback
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    $10.00  on  Faldo    at   6/1        =       $60.00
    $ 7.50  on  Woosnam  at   8/1        =       $60.00
    $ 7.50  on  Seve     at   8/1	 =       $60.00
    $ 5.00  on  Olazabal at   12/1       =       $60.00
    $ 4.30  on  Stewart  at   14/1       =	 $60.20
    $ 3.00  on  Langer   at   20/1	 =       $60.00
    $ 2.40  on  Couples  at   25/1       =       $60.00
    $ 2.40  on  Parry    at   25/1       =       $60.00
    $ 1.85  on  Watson   at   33/1       =       $60.15
    $ 1.85  on  Calcav.  at   33/1       =       $60.15
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    $45.80 Total bet so far with the smallest payoff being $60.00

	So if you decided on just a $5.00 win, you'd have another $9.20 to
wager on various other long shots, determined by subtracting $55 for your
total bet from the expected $60 winnings, giving you a $5 profit. With $9.20
to bet on various long shots at greater than 33/1 odds, you could probably
wager on another 10 to 12 golfers, giving you an excellent chance of picking
the winner.
	Multiply those figures by 100, and instead of a $5 profit, you'ld
have an excellent chance of winning $500.00. Of course, you'ld have to bet
$5,500.00 to win $6,000.00. But as you can see, the odds are very much in
your favor.

    The NY Times article this morning had the following
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    with the wind at his back on 17 Seve crushed a 375 yd drive and hit a 9
    iron to six feet and made eagle. on 18 (475 par 4) again downwind he
    drove with his 4 iron and hit a 7 iron 45 ' short of the pin.

    As he was lining up what he intended to be a lag putt to the hole, his
    caddy, billy foster, said, "make it , sometines strange things happen."
    The ball, hit with perfect speed, dropped into the center of the cup
    as the grandstands surrounding the green exploded in approval.

    "I holed it, it was a strange thing", said Ballesterros.

    ----------------------------------------

    	Among other strange things there was the 16 year old lass who
    "streaked" across the first green to buss Olazablel and Curtis
    shooting a 70 to stay in contention.

    Finally from a glimpse of tee times from yesterday vs results it looked
    like, as usual, that the early tee-offs provided the low scores with
    the Stewart, Richardson, Norman threesome going 72, 74, 74

1306.24Baker-Finch the champAYOV27::OPSA mans a man for aw that..Mon Jul 22 1991 09:1780

     Ian Baker-Finch won the 120th British Open with a fine display of
    attacking golf over the final two days. Baker-Finch had played in the
    final match at St. Andrews in 1984 and 1990 but fell away under the
    pressure. This time however, he proved himself up to the task with a
    brilliant front nine of 29 strokes on the final day giving him a 5
    stroke lead with 9 to play. A more conservative back nine saw him
    finish with a 66 for a total of 272, 2 ahead of fellow Australian, Mike
    Harwood. Craig Parry, Greg Norman and Rodger Davis all finished in the
    top 12 making it a great tournament for the Aussies.

     Europe's top golfers had a bad tournament with only Sevvy and Eamonn
    Darcy getting towards the top of the leader board. Sevvy however had 2
    bogies in the first 3 holes yesterday to blow his challenge away. Darcy
    was looking good for 2nd or 3rd spot until a bogey and double on 14 and
    15 pushed him back to joint 4th.

     A good tournament for the Americans with some of the best final day
    scores pushing them well up the leader board. Europe's Ryder Cup
    captain, Bernard Gallacher, must be feeling pretty stupid after
    predicting that no American would finish in the top 5. A very silly and
    unnecessary statement to make.

     Final scores                                  -  280 par

    Can someone across the Pond report on the whereabouts of Sandy Lyle? As
    I was watching the tape of Fridays play, American TV and the BBC
    reported Sandy hit his final drive out of bounds at 18 and just walked
    off the course. Saturdays paper reported a DQ with no further
    explanation.

    I thought Sandy was getting his game back. He even looked like he would
    make a run at the Championship (pre tourney info). I know he shot 80 on
    Thursday but I was suprised he just walked off on Friday.

    Is the British press giving him a hard time for this?

    Any info would be of interest.

     Sandy Lyle walked off after his tee-shot at 18 went out of bounds. An
    official of the PGA said it would be unlikely if any action was taken
    by them in terms of a fine as Lyle has been having a rough time
    recently. The papers that I have read are very sympathetic to Lyle as
    it seems he is still suffering a lot of stress following his former
    wife remarrying and his 2 kids calling another man "dad".

     Richard Boxall was the golfer who suffered a stress fracture of his
    leg and was strechered off the course on Saturday. He had complained of
    pains in the leg earlier in the round. As he belted a drive at hole 10,
    his leg snapped and he collapsed to the ground. He will be in plaster
    for 12 weeks. Very unlucky as he was only 3 off the lead at the time
    and looked like posting a good score.

    Well the final winner was a bit of a surprise, but in retrospect
    considering his previous 'OPEN' performances, it shouldn't have been so
    unexpected.
    Some thoughts after the dust has settled.
    1. A great triumph for the Aussies, following on Craig Parry's win of
    the Scottish Open. They appear to be the single strongest golfing
    nation at the moment.

    2. Also a great triumph for the American tour, which provided nearly
    all the top 10 places.

    3. A disaster for the European tour, which failed miserably. I hope now
    that we Europeans can take a rest from the 'OUR tours better, than YOUR
    tour theme'.

    4. The Ryder cup will be a great event, but we should now realise that
    the odds are strongly in favour of the USA.

    5. Seve may have improved recently, but he is not the player he was 4
    or 5 years ago. He never even posed a challenge, and just fizzled out
    like a damp squib. He HAS to sort his driving out. Since he changed to
    a metal wood, he is constantly in trouble off the tee, and not just
    with his metal wood, but also with irons of the tee.

    6. Sandy has not recovered from his slump. In fact I think he may be
    entering a new low, and I doubt if Bernard Gallacher will want him for
    the Ryder cup now.

    7. Bernard Gallacher should keep his mouth shut, and stop making
    ridulous and inflamatory statements. He should be setting an example of
    good sportsmanship and not stirring up bad feeling.

    8. Golf can be a dangerous game sometimes. Perhaps this accident will
    encourage Richard Boxall to go on a diet !!! -)

    Hi,

    	Ian Baker-Finch really showed how to play a final round in
    	a major event!	I felt bad for Mark O'Meara (sp) , he must
    	have felt helpless competing against such perfect golf...

    	 If you think back on Ians' first nine holes... it was VERY
    	conceivable he could have birdied 9 straight .

    	hole #1 par - if he hit the putt a foot harder it was in.
    	hole #2 birdie
    	hole #3 birdie
    	hole #4 birdie
    	hole #5 par - makeable putt, just missed
    	hole #6 birdie
    	hole #7 birdie
    	hole #8 par - another makeable putt
    	hole #9 par - another makeable putt

    	I think he missed one fairway (18th)... and it seemed every approach
        shot was on the pin! Fantastic golf!

    	My friends and I went to Pleasant Valley in Sutton Mass. where
    	Ian lost in a record tying 7th sudden death final. It proved
    	to be just the tune-up for the Open pressure...

      I can't imagine playing a long side of my best friend and he's
kicking the pants off me. Not only that IAN had his boat stolen out
of O'Meara's back yard.
      The one PRO that realy made me laugh was Darcey,he was playing
Chunk golf. Even one of the commentators was surprised at the divots
and how accurate the shots were. Looked like shot's like mine except
the ball doesn't go as good.

   By the way who was the goober streaking past Seve in the last
round? The paper said it was a kid.

    Great golf and much admiration for Ian Baker-FInch (IBF as they call
    him). He won with class, great to see a class act at the top. But
    enough of that, how about my man Boom Boom. He had agreat round and
    could have been better, but Ian's start just took the wind out of his
    sails. He tried to make every shot great and just couldn't. I feel he
    is close to being a mature golfer now...even Jack Nicklaus had some
    nice things to say. The Ryder Cup is looking more interesting. The US
    even had some players not play in Britain so they could collect RYder
    Cup points in the US.

    I like to see golfers like Darcey, it only proves that there is much
    room for individuality in a swing. Nicklaus and Freddy Boom Boom are
    two others that have "flying Elbows" though not to the extent that
    Darcey takes it.
