1291.0. "GALWAY GOLF SOCIETY CAPTAIN'S PRIZE" by MACNAS::SPOMPHRETT () Tue Jun 25 1991 11:43
While the cream of Europe and a few Americans were vying for the Irish Open
title in Killarney, the golfers of Digital Galway were competing for a much more
prestigious title - that of Captain's Prize Winner, 1991.
This year's competition was held in Birr Golf Club, with a record entry of 60.
Long gone are the days when having 15 competitors was in itself an achievement.
The game has now reached such a level of popularity that a different problem
needs to be surmounted - that of finding courses which can accommodate
the numbers wishing to play.
Anyway, to the competition. The Captain's Prize is the highlight of our golfing
year, and as such the huge entry was not surprising. Earlier competitions had
not thrown up any outstanding favourite. The handicappers had it nearly right,
with very few who were carrying handicaps to spare. The list of prizewinners
from those earlier competitions was long, so everyone had all to play for.
A high target was set by one of the early starters. John Gaffney covered the
course in 6 over par, giving him a nett 1 under. Eugene Carroll came in soon
after with a nett 6 under. These early gross and nett scores stood for a long
time. Then the real fireworks started. Pat Scully, playing with a 14 handicap,
came in 7 over for a nett 7 under. Eugene's disappointment was obvious. Rumour
had it that yet another 7 under was coming in, but someone had their sums
wrong as Paul O'Driscoll was (only) 6 under, to go into third place.
Mike Melody then came in with 4 under, to push the 2 unders of Colm Ruane and
Brian Costigan into fifth and sixth places. Nobody got near John Gaffney's
gross 6 over, so he held on to win the gross prize. A five way tie was decided
in Mike Hasset's favour to win the best front 9 with 2 under, and the
recovery of the day gave Vinny Byrne the best back 9 with 4 under.
Congratulations and commiserations were offered as the group sat down to an
excellent meal - accompanied by some excellent drink. Captain John Melody,
who returned from his annual holiday only that morning, presented the prizes
immediately after dinner, and a tired but happy group made for home soon
afterwards.
