    If you go across the bridge to Jamestown Island there's the Jamestown
    Golf club right at the base of the bridge. It's a little public 9 hole
    course, pretty short, wide open all the way, was built around 1900.
    Not a great course by any means but I like to play there once in a
    while.
1286.2Montaup CCDATABS::PALPaul LemaireWed Jun 19 1991 13:358
    Montaup CC is in Portsmouth at the northern end of Aquidneck Island
    (Newport being at the southern end). Take East Main Road north to the
    Ramada Inn. Go left under Rte 24 then take the first right.

    Montaup is a lovely 18-hole course. The 11th hole is on Mount Hope Bay
    with a great view of the Mount Hope Bridge and Bristol, RI (Billy Andrade's
    home town). My father is a member there and I play it several times
    a year.
1286.3some more Newport area coursesDECSVC::CARBONEWed Jun 19 1991 16:2120
     I will second Montaup, I used to plsy there regularly until they
    started charging 28.00 and no non-members until 2:00. Got to be
    too much of a hassle for a course that is nice but not worth the
    aggravation.
    On the island is Green Valley C.C. A pretty good layout that really
    has some good holes. The only bad point is the course is very hard.
     Tough to land the ball on the greens and hold it there. 10th hole
    is a nice 600 yard par 5 thats always fun to play.
    If you want to travel maybe 20-30 minutes from Newport there is
    an excellent track in Exeter called Exeter C.C. 18.50 for 18 and
    you won't find a better public course anywhere. Excellent condition
    and the people are real nice. Its family owned and maintained and
    they really do a super job with the course. If you're interested
    I can post directions, its probably a 30 minute ride from downtown
    Newport.
    Swansea C.C is also a nice course. It is under new ownership and
    they really put a lot of money into renovations. Good mix of tight
    and open holes. About a 20 minute ride from Newport.

    Hope this helps....Mike

    Another course on RI 24 is Portsmouth R.I. continue past Montaup,
    go by the Ratheon Submarine Facility and take your first left at
    the lights. It is a public course with some interesting holes, most
    notably the 600 yd plus, downhill par 5, and right after that a 230
    yd (If I remember correctly) par three.
    PS I think that Montaup may only take non-members after 2 pm on the
    weekends.
    Good luck.

1286.6Exeter or Jamestown, my voteFLYSQD::MONTVILLEThu Jun 20 1991 11:299

    I'll second Exeter C.C., I found it to be one of the nicest courses
    around and it is reasonable as far as price. I plan on playing
    there in the very near future. Also, if you just want to hack around
    head for Jamestown. I play there often as my in-laws have a camper
    on that island.

    Happy-hacking!

    Mike,

    Could you post the directions for Exeter G.C., I will be taking a weeks
    vacation somewhere up in R.I. and would like to play there if I can.
    Please post the phone number if you know it too.

    I am originally from R.I., but havent't lived there in 15 years and
    didn't play golf when I did, so you can use 95 as a starting point for
    the directions.

    Thanks,
    /JK

    Mike, I'm heading up there the last week of this month (to the great
    state of R.I.) will be staying in Narragansett. I am still interested
    in this course. Has any one played it recently?
