1261.0. "Beginner looking to buy a set of clubs" by DSTEG1::SLACK () Fri May 31 1991 13:47

    I read note 10.0-10.34 regarding woods vs metals. I'm a beginner
    and need to purchase some clubs. Naturally I want to start with
    quality clubs at the lowest possible cost.

    After store hopping and notes searching the following are some of
    my options so far:

    A: Buy used - price range varies
    B: Buy a Dynastar beginner's set for $199 at Nevada Bob's (the set
       includes the irons and drivers only, bag and putter extra)
    C: Buy a set of the Minzuno MRX in Lechmere, the irons were $199 and
       drivers were $189, this would cost $388 (bag and putter extra)
    D: Buy a set of 3 wooden/wood Wilson K-28 drivers for $95 or Wilson's
       less expensive wooden/wood drivers for $65, and the Tour Model II
       irons 2 through w for $199. This would cost $264 or $294
       (bag and putter extra)
    E: Heavy Hitters has the Tour Model II packge for $379. The package
       includes all of the irons and drivers, bag, and dozen of their driving
       range balls.

    Background information:
    Fortunatley for me, I can use a standard set of men's clubs because my
    natural swing allows me a powerful hit. I've taken two lessons and
    have been to the driving range once [the last time I played golf was
    over 20 years ago] and am averaging 160-175 yards with the 5 iron. For
    a woman this is pretty good. Based on this information, the instructor
    suggested that I purchase the standard's men's set...

    The question is: Based upon your experience which of the above
    options "appears" to be the best deal for a beginner looking for a set
    of clubs?

    This is a tough call, but I'll be glad to give my opinion :-}

    Option a is a very risky. What happens usually is that you get clubs
    that are an excellent buy, great quality but you can't hit them because
    they are made for a more experienced player.
    Option B well I've never liked Nevada Bob's because I've always thought
    that the price to quality ratio was awful. IT is however the best
    price.
    Option C, well I've worked on (repaired) Minzuno clubs and IMHO, the
    whole set isn't worth $100.
    Option D, I like Wilson clubs. They are far from the best, but they'll
    take the abuse you'll dish out. The price seems out of touch with
    reality.
    Option E, I've never heard of Heavy Hitters, but if it's the same Tour
    Model II that I make, it's not a bad buy depending upon what you REALLY
    get for the money.

    If it were me buying the clubs, AND I was in the southern New England
    area, I'd call Gimme Golf (the number is in this conference somewhere)
    and ask for the Golfsmith starter set. Now that you're totally
    confused, good luck!

1261.2How about Palm Springs TBS or TR2?DSTEG1::SLACKFri May 31 1991 17:5524
    I just stopped by NE Golf Supply in Salem NH. They had two Palm

    Thank you for a speedy reply....you've helped me to decide on buying
    one complete set, new, and I'll go with the metal woods that go with
    the set. I feel that by having all of the clubs with a similar balance
    and material complexion will allow me to stay focused on the game since
    each club will have a familiar feel to the grip etc.

    I just came back from NE Golf Supply in Salem NH and saw their Palm
    Springs sets which looked pretty good. The salesman is willing to
    sell me the TBS (Tour Balance Set) for $259 for iron and woods, and
    the TR2 model he is selling for $287.

    Does anyone know if this is a good buy? I tested the TR2 model and it
    had a comfortable swing. The material and design on the irons looked
    very similar to the Tommy Ammour model.

    I may pick these up this evening...So far, this appears to be the best
    because as

    Well I've never heard of either one of these brands, so I can't comment
    on them. I beleive that you can get a better deal from Gimme Golf just
    to the north of Salem. The PH# is (603) 895-0115. The Golfsmith
    starter set/full set will cost less than those you mentioned and I can
    vouch for the quality of the clubs. (sold lots of them myself)
    {BTW that is NOT my phone number}
    Anyway give it a thought, give the guy a call and tell him you're a
    DEC employee. Also AFTER you've made the deal tell him that KO says hi
    and that I didn't qualify for the tournament in So. Cal this weekend.
    Then just ignore the blank stare. :-)
