When you get to El-Lay grap a phone book and look in the "Yellow
Pages" under Golf equipment retailers and there will probably
be several hundred shops to choose from. Maybe the SoCal Dandy
could help on this or Big Mac might have some good ideas also.
Two that I know of are Nevada Bobs and Las Vegas Golf & Tennis.
Both these shops are national chains.

It's not really *around LA*, but in February I played at Mesquite
CC in Palm Springs (about 120 miles west of LA). I really liked the
course and there's just not much that compares with playing golf in Palm
    Springs...

That sounds like fun! I've never played a course with _that_ much
    water on it...

ah-yup, you can tell I'm one of those right coasters: I just can't get the
hang of which direction I'm going in when I'm heading *away* from the
    water.

Although... it seems to me no matter *where* you are in Califoria, you're
heading *away* from the water ... :-)

SoCalDandy here. A lot depends on where you will be and when you plan
to play. LA is only 100 miles long and 60 miles wide, with lots of
places to buy and lose golf balls. With some more specifics I can
help. Bothe Nevada Bob's and Roger Dunne's are chains that sell a
great selection of clubs, and have some great deals on used clubs.

If you are in for a personal challenge to remembered I would recommend
the courses at Industry Hills (rated in the Top25 Public courses inthe
U.S) The Babe Didrickson course was too tough for the LPGA so they
dropped it. The Ike (Eisenhower) course has five sets of tees.

There are some nice courses along the coast, one in Palos Verde, one in
Monarch Bay. There are some great new courses in Orange County and some
nice courses in the San Dimas area. In any case, be prepared to spend $50
to play and spend 5 hours doing it.

Send me a little more info and I can help you out. Or call me at DTN
    535-4021.

SoCalDandy gave excellent advice. I would suggest Roger Dunn's based
on the Service they have provided me in the past. Bought a set of Lynx
Tigress G's for my Sweetheart at Christmas and I find that I payed less
than I have seen advertised since.

As SoCalDandy points out, LA is "bigger than a bread box...", so we
need more particulars. I would suggest this great week-end if it fits
your plans - Santa Barbara has Sandpiper for a Saturday round, then on
to Lompoc and stay at the Embassy Suites on Saturday night ($69) with
an evening Happy Hour and full breakfast on Sunday and then a round at
La Purissima (a personal favorite). Both were $40+ for a round last
time I played. On the PV Peninsula, Los Verdes is a public course,
which runs $17 and is great, but difficult to get on. On the West
Side, I always recommend Rancho Park, an LA City course at $17 and also
very difficult to get on. Give us more particulars and we will try to
help. My telephone is 213.417.3767 or dtn 531.3767.

    Re: .5

I agree with SCD on Eisenhower course. It is a tough course. My first
round there was soon after it opened. (before it became a Sheraton
resort) I played that course total of 10 times and my best score was
80 from the back tee and I played one of my best game that day.
(worst was 95) When you go there, bring lots of balls.

In mid 80's I used to take 3 weeks off and drive to S.Calif. and play
two course a day for 2 to 2 1/2 weeks straight without playing same
course twice (this was before I got married) and my favorite courses
along Eisenhower are: Valencia (near six-flags & now private),
Mesa Verdes C.C. (private, in Costa Mesa) & Palos Verdes.

I also like the short fun course called Anaheim Hills. It's not a great
    course, but nice hilly layout.

    Re: .6

I agree, Sandpiper and Rancho Park are also nice course but
I played Palos Verdes in the morning and then played Los Verdes in the
afternoon and it's worth the money to play P.V. instead of L.V.
