1252.0. "Club Championships" by BTOQA::SHANE () Mon May 20 1991 17:04

    This may seem like a strange question, but here goes any way.

    This is only my 2nd year of having a club membership. The course
    I belong to is a "Still Under Construction" public course, that has
    a very relaxed management system.

    The course is not kept well yet, is inexpensive to play, and fits
    the need for a place for beginners to go where no one will really
    get up set with them.

    With that in mind here's my question:

    Are most club championship tournaments handi-capped?

    Our's isn't. There are two flights, (A for 10 and under handicap, and
    B over 10). But the tournament is a scratch event.

    So here I am, (I average right around 100 for 18), and I have to play
    against folks who can beat my best scores with their worst scores.

    I asked about it this weekend, and I was told by the person that does
    it that it is standards practice of most courses. Is this true?

    If so, I guess I will still enter, but only as an excuse to play!

1252.1This is how we do it !RAYBOK::COOPEROne-ton Tomato !Mon May 20 1991 18:057
     The club I play with uses 4-5 flights divided by handicap, only the
    winner of the 0-5 handicap flight gets the title of Club Champion.
    The oher flights 6-10, 11-15, 15-20, 21-over, receive a trophy
    indicating that they won their flight in the club championship.
    You play with your current handicap at the time of the tourney.

    At Green Meadow in Hudson, NH there are 4 flights. The first is
    scratch which provides the REAL Club Champion. The other three are
    broken up by handi-caps and are still called club champions and they
    win the same prize, a years free golf.... And boy am I enjoying it.

1252.3Years free play ???RAYBOK::COOPEROne-ton Tomato !Mon May 20 1991 18:305
    Wow !!! A years free play ?? I will have to bring that up
    with my club. I didn't win but it would sure have been a
    nice incentive to play well.

1252.4there are incentives....TRLIAN::GORDONMon May 20 1991 18:3610
    Yup there are incentives to play well...

    last year I was runner-up in championship flight = 100.00 off
    membership..winner got free years membership

    yrear before I was winner of A flight= 100.00 off membership...

    at my club it's broken up like at green meadows but in all
    but the championship division you give/get strokes based on
    your handicap...
1252.5Match play at MarlboroPINGS::OGRENMon May 20 1991 20:0616
What an excellent idea! Marlboro is similar, but the prize money is quite a
bit less (not that it's been one of my worries ;-) ...

	Club Championship	0-7	scratch
	Mayor's Cup		7-12	scratch
	President's Cup		12-18	handicap
	Vice-President's Cup	18+	handicap

The actual handicap range may shift a tad for equal distribution according to
member handicaps. Also, anyone can move up a flight but there is no moving down.
Handicap flights may be at 80% but I'm not positive on that one.

All flights are match play after a 36 hole qualifying. Makes for an outstanding
tournament!

    Back where I grew up and was a member (Northern NY), they started out
    with 36 holes of qualifying. From there you were split into different
    flights. Then you played match play until a winner was determined in
    each flight. Only the Championship-flight winner was crowned the club
    champion. This was the same for ladies, juniors and seniors also.

    At our club we have flight breakdowns:

    Championship - 12 lowest scores for the first round make this flight.
    		   The winner of the 4 round event is the "club champion.
    		   The top four finishers represent the club during
    		     the intercounties (central pa.) tournament. Our club
    		     has won the last 8 intercounties championship!
    		   Usually 0-4 handicappers

    First flight - same prize money as championship without the glamour
    	5-7 hdcpr's
    second flight - same prize money... no glamour 8-12 hdcp
    third - same money... best flight for competitive scores 13-17 hdcp
    fourth - same money... traditional sandbagger flight 18-22 hdcp
    fifth - same money... no respect 22-28
    sixth - same money... boobie flight 28-36
    seventh - same money... welcome to the wild,wild, west! 36-99999999999
