1248.0. "NITRO" by POBOX::PALASEK (How soon is now?) Fri May 17 1991 19:44

I received a box of NITRO 440 golf balls as a gift. I have
	never heard of them myself.

They seem to be quite unique in design, having (what
must be intential) an unusual mixture of large and small
dimples. I could not find any specifications on the box
	as to construction or compression.

A few of my friends got into a debate as to whether NITRO
golf balls are approved by the USGA/PGA organizations.

I am basically a beginner in skill, and found the NITROs to
play comfortably well (at my level).

I'm curious if anyone is more familiar with this brand,
specifically if they're considered as 'approved' or not, and
in regards to their design. If they're not accepted within the
defined ranges of golf balls, more info on their design could
help me choose an approved similar alternative.

I've searched the conference and only found two other brief
references to NITRO, which did not provide answers to my above
	questions.

	Thanks for any replies...

These nitro balls are like hitting rocks. The compression is either
120 or 130, I can't remember. But, you should not use them with wood
woods, only metal woods. Repeated use with wood woods will destry the
    clubs, loosening the inserts.

They are supposed to be rocket launchers distance balls but I
    understand they are hard.

I found them to be very much like the Pinnacle Golds.

Ya I used at Stow on the North. I drove the green on the par five first
hole. Pretty good ball but it didn't bite.

	Hi all,

This is my first year in the Maynard league. I am also very new
	to golf. Great game.

I received a box of Nitros last Chistmas. Now that I know these
are hot-shot balls, I will probably not purchase new ones since
I couldn't tell the difference between them and a "softer" ball
	anyway.
