1170.0. "1991 Masters picks..." by AYOV27::DREES () Wed Feb 27 1991 01:39

Although there is still approximately a month till the Masters, it's
    time to pick your winner.

With Europe dominating World golf, the winner must surely come from
    this side of the pond.

Can Faldo do it for a third year in a row and if so, which 2nd rate
Yank will he beat in this years play-off ?

If it isn't to be Faldo I'll go for Woosnam to win his first major.

    Please Mr Drees,

    	Not again...

Lets try something new this time, and keep the topic related
to the Masters and who might win it .

If you simply want to have an argument... would you like the
5 minute or 10 minute argument? (Monty Python) :)

I'm not committing until the Euro Tour has been going a few weeks and
Faldo & Co have a few swings under their belts. The winner of the first
European event won't even be at Augusta.

I agree, I haven't read anything on the European tour to make any
guesses, altough I can say that the US tour is not showing so far
anything either. The tournaments I have watched have all been won by
no big names. Maybe later in March.

One thing is for sure, it won't be a 'no-name' that wins the Masters.
This tournament brings the 'cream to the top' as well as any golfing
event. Who was the last 'no-name' to win it?

I find it interesting that the Europeans do so well here: Seve, Langer,
Lyle and Faldo all winners recently. It certainly can't be because the
course is similar to what the Europeans play on. And the European field
is just as strong in the US Open, they don't do so well there.

To me, and I think most golf fans in the States (fans, not the players
themselves) the Masters is the ultimate. By far, I look forward to it
more than any other tournament. I think it's because the tradition
is more apparent to the TV viewer since it's always played at the
same beautiful course and always televised in first class manner by the
    same people.

How does the Masters rank in Europe? I know *nothing* comes close to
your British Open (in your view), but I'm curious if the Masters has
the same aura there as it does in the US.

Sorry for draging up the old Europe v Yanks issue. As the season
hasn't really started over here, things have been quiet golf wise.
I thought I'd start baiting again just to see the reaction.

It may surprise but The Masters is No.1 for me. Obviously there is
more prestige over here in winning THE Open but for television coverage,
excitement and dramatic finishes the Masters is tops. It is the major
I look forward to most. If this years tournament can match any of the
previous 4 or 5 that'll do for me, regardless of what nationality the
    winner might be.

It's no mistake that THE best player, of his day (Bob Jones), designed
THE best course (AN) on which to play THE best tournament. The Masters
is the most cherished by players and the most enjoyed by fans.
Last year while on my honeymoon in Hawaii, with some of the most
beautiful course in the world saying, "Joe, come play me", I was in my
hotel room for four days watching. My wife at first thought she married
a lunatic, (which she did) but even she enjoyed it and stayed off the
beach for 3 of the four days.
No other has the emotion and excitment The Masters does year after
    year.
    Thank you Mr. Jones!!!

In January, I told my son to watch Jim Hallet.
Why ? I saw him play two holes at PV last year and liked what I saw.
Of course he, can't putt , which is why I also like "Boom Boom
    Couples".

BUT: A real long shot : I'll take Jim Hallet
                               for the Masters.

He's been playing with shoulder/cup problems for two years,
and this year he is "injury free". Draws the driver "nice"
and long, so should be a "Masters" advantage.
And is local "Cape" talent, so would like to see him win it.

But Hallet has got to have the worst grip on tour! Everything I
read & hear about fundamentals flies in the face of Jim's swing.
(In spite of that he can play, however I don't think he's built out
the "game solid enough to win a major" material).

1170.10Variations on a theme...NEWPRT::JOHNSON_DOTue Mar 05 1991 17:4524
Intersting you should comment about fundamentals. The only fundamental
that counts is getting the club head back to the ball square and
consistantly. The biggest break thru I have had in my game was
realizing that I was never going to be a Byron Nelson-Swing Machine.
No flat left ,bent right, no neutral grip et al. In fact, I read an
article about grips and come to find out that they range from standard
to 10 finger, strong (3 knuckles) ala Freddy Couples. This means that
there is room in the game for variations and the important thing is
make your swing repeatable so you can predict the outcome.

Jack Nicklaus has the flying elbow. Rocco Mediate uses the long
putter. Fuzzy is bent over like a man with a bad back. Lee hits left
to right, Norman draws the ball, Calchiveccia hits a "power fade". Once
I realized the variations, I felt comfortable with my own swing having a
spot on the continuum. I have gone from a 24 to a 9 handicap and can
now vary my swing , stance etc for different situations

I got beat by a guy once that stepped into his shots like a baseball
player. Next time you watch a tourney, look at the variations and see
    if one resembles your approach.

    Any other thoughts?

    Larry,
I never really noticed his grip, even at PV but I'll be sure
    to take notice next time.
Thanks, but I still think it's his putting that is not up to
     Tour standards.
Bobby Jones said:"the only thing that counts is how the blade hits
    the ball". Simple but.....????

1170.13Big Dipper PINGS::OGRENWed Mar 06 1991 16:4117
Golf's a funny game. I always believed that only superb putters could win
at Augusta. But then Langer wins, and Crenshaw (who draws the ball) only
wins once. I think *all* touring pros are good putters. To win at Augusta
you have to hit approaches to where you have a *chance* to sink a putt.

As for Hallett, doesn't he have a big time dip in his swing in addition to
his wicked strong grip? When all of his timing is on he competes very well
(he has had some good tournaments in February); when the timing breaks down
he really gets out of control. He has amazing skill to get the results he does
with that swing!

btw we've seen Ted Schulz, Ed Fiori, and Dave Barr do well with "ugly"
swings so it can be done ...

Waiting for no more temporaries,

Eric

a swing looks...the pro's ALL look pretty much the same AT IMPACT and
ALL can consistantly REPEAT their own swing....

that's the "secret" if there is one....swing repeatedly the same on
shot after shot and stick within the fundamentals enough to allow
the clubhead to return to the ball square time after time after time...

    To All,

Nice to see the votes of confidence for Zinger. Did you ever wonder
why personalities like Jose Canseco and Ricky Henderson don't survive
on the Tour. Probably has to do with the fact that they"renegotiate"
their contract each week. Some of these guys make 10 million plus, but
only because they win and have maintained a marketable persona. No
wonder guys like Bo, Magic and Michael(Jordan) do so well. They have
similar humble but confident approaches to their success and skills.

1170.16Finally, Norman wins it!!!SA1794::WELLSPEAKNY GIANTS = NFL Champions!!!Fri Mar 08 1991 10:2312
To win at Augusta, I think their are three main factors involved. One,
being able to draw the ball of the tee with accuracy. Two, being a very good
putter, by PGA standards of course, and three, being able to handle the pressure
of a Major, and more than that, one of the mpst prestigeous of the Majors.
Leave out just one of those mentioned above, and you better EXCEL at the other
two!!!
So who do I pick? I'd have to go with Greg Norman. His main
competition should come from, Jack Nicklaus, who is playing very well right now
and Nick Faldo, who has two of my above three mentioned criteria, and has the
ability to EXCEL at those two!!!

The one you forgot and the one that may be as important as excellent
putting is the ability to hit the ball extremely high. Just like
Norman, Jack, Seve, and others that have won.

I like Azinger. He's ready to arrive.

As far as Hallet, he won't even play unless he wins between now and the

I take Greg Norman. You have to be aggressive. Sometimes Norman gets

Just tell him everyday is Sunday.

As for Seve, what's the big deal about him? Everytime I watch him on
TV, he's punching out of the woods to get back on the fairway. If he
takes some lessons, maybe in a couple years.

As for Faldo, forget it. He will barely make the cut. Strong
statements, but then I like to stand out from the crowd. Watch out for

I love the Masters, the excitement and pressure is incredible!

collapses etc. ... their are a lot of ghosts on that course

Just a comment about Freddy Couples...

Fred would be one of the best in the world if he had any drive.
I doubt seriously if Fred can win a major because he does't care if he
wins one. Fred is one of the least motivated players on tour. Fred's
idea of getting in shape is eating pizza and watching television.
Personally I think he has the right idea, enjoy life, make a couple of
bucks, and have fun. Fred is one of the few players with enough raw
talent to get away with it.

Right.

Wrong.

Drive and desire aren't synonymous. Couples WANTS to win majors.
Badly. He says so. And if you don't believe him, watch tapes of the last PGA.
Your putting doesn't collapse like his did down the stretch unless you
care so much you can hardly hold onto the putter.

But, unfortunately for Couples, wanting something and having the
drive to fulfill your ambition don't go hand in hand. The great
ones--Jones, Hogan, Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson, and now Faldo (among
others)--are/were DRIVEN. They decided they were going to be the best
in the world and they would stop at nothing to make that happen.

Weiskopf (Sp?) called it when he said Couples has no goals. It ticked
off Couples, because he thinks its enough to want something, that that
is tantamount to having a goal. But its not. I should know. I'm a lot
like Freddie that way. Plenty of dreams, but no goals. No discipline.
Unfortunately, I don't have his talent, either. Oh well...It just means
Couples will be rich and unfulfilled and I'll always be poor...Poor
me...

Back to the subject at hand.

I have to go with the better golfers, the Europeans. Not in any order
but I believe it will be one of the following:

    Olazabal
    Faldo
    Woosnam

    Best Americans:

    Kite
    Strange
    Mudd

    and my annual sentimental pick:

My prediction is that the older generation will make a comback:

Watson and Nicklause are playing very solid these days, just don't
let them go head to head in the last group :-).

To win: either Norman, Nicklaus or Woosnam, probably Norman.

Faldo, well he will be in the middle of the pack.

Probably true about Freddy. These tourneys are won by non-risk taking,
hot putting and cool nerves. But for my money, I would much rather
watch Freddy, Greg, Sevi or even Calch than some of the more boring
golfers like Strange, Watson and Faldo.

Besides Freddy is only 5'9", has a beautiful wife, lives in Palm Springs
and makes enough money to keep swinging for the fences.

Don't think you are right about drive. He is a very competitive guy.
He has a big problem, a very loose swing that can break down under the
pressure of courses like Augusta. You are right about ability. For
him to win, he would have to change swings and look what that did to
Clampett, Langer and others. I think his swing, Davis Love and others
is what the tour needs. Otherwise, they could make golf like some of
the car racing series'...identically equipped cars, boring racing.

After painfully watching Watson and Nicklaus twitching and ginching it
on the greens during the 3rd round of the USF&G, it appears that they have
little chance in this years Masters.

Too bad Hallet didn't win to qualify for the Masters. As an amateur,
he played at the Masters and did quite well one year. He would have been
my pick, as he is starting to play extremely well. Interesting swing eh?

Got to go with Woosnam. His length off the tee will give him a big
advantage on the par 5's which always seem to be the key at the Masters.
His putting seems to have improved too. I think he took a lot of pressure
off himself by getting that first U.S. win under his belt.

Some that will make the top ten:

Kite, Mize, Norman, Stadler, Olazebal(sp), Faldo

Some that will have a so-so showing:

           Strange, Floyd, Watson, Nicklaus, Irwin

Some that won't make the cut:

Couples, Donald, Seve, Mediate, Stewart (recovering from injury)

Well, my money is on Olazabal. I think he is coming to Augusta as a hungry
experienced pro. And I still am impressed by last years Firestone demolition!

We don't see much of him, and I'd like to be able to say his name properly ;-),
but this year he's got the game!

Curtis seems to be pointing for this Masters. I wish some of those new
European stars like McLean, Richardson could play though the best bet
for Masters would be "an American not picked in the top 20" (at least
    to place).

Olazabal should be the favorite but at 7-1 at best

I still choose him for the Masters, because he is my mentor in golf.

think he has the guts to win.

With the Masters getting so close I thought I add
my $.02 worth. Everyone in this note is picking some real good
pros in fact Gregg Norman if he can get through the first 2 rounds
might have a shot,an if Jack Nicholus keeps his ball in play he might
too. Whatever, the younger players had better bring every shot that they
can think of for the Masters is just that for the Masters of the game.
I for one would love to see Jack or Gregg win,but if you
have been watching the tourneys on the tube there is one Pro who I
think could make a upset. My pick

Heard about Faldo's interview in 'Sports Illustrated'.

I think he's going over the top. For anyone not familiar with what he
said, he strongly criticised the swings of Azinger and Norman, saying
that they had serious faults. He panned Payne Stewarts dress sense,
saying that it was like himself playing in boxer shorts with the Union
    Jack on them.
I believe that he also criticised Strange's 'attitude'.

He's likely to make a lot of enemies in the galleries with comments
    like that.
Even though there may be some truth to the comments, it isn't proper
for a champion like him to demean himself by making them.

Won't he look very foolish if any of these players were to beat him in
his quest for the 3rd green jacket.

An age old trick...get your opponents thinking about everything
except what the goal is....some use psychology(?sp) on the golf course
others use various gimmicks to upset their competition, but it still
in the end comes down to what Nicklaus has always said...

"I beat people with good golf shots..." and in the end this is all

1170.49Fiction NOT FactCHEFS::NEWPORTPWed Apr 10 1991 13:3825
I heard about the article in Sports Ilustrated which had Faldo being
quoted as saying all sorts of things. I thought this doesn't sound
quite right, then I heard Faldo himself speak to one of the BBC
    reporters who's in Augusta.

He said that the article was a work of fiction and when asked if he was
intending to apologise he said."No way, if anyone should apologise it
should be the guy who wrote the article. Greg, Payne and Zinger know I
    wouldn't say those things".

It seems the reporter wrote to make a headline for himself. Faldo is
going to search him out. He also says he gets fed up with people who,
just because he's in the spotlight this week, are making up all sorts
of things and asking real dumb questions. One guy asked if there was
any significance in him playing the back nine in a practice round
before the front nine (maybe it's to practice the play-off holes 8^) .
He then said he has to be careful because someone might make something
of the fact that he cleaned his teeth a few minutes later than the day
    before!!

Pity some of these reporters can't find REAL things to write about.

     Tom Watson -5
Jack Nicholus -4 tied with 4 others
