1114.0. "1990 Skins Game" by WALTA::LENEHAN (stick-em) Tue Nov 20 1990 13:21

    Hi Everyone,

The 1990 Skins game will be televised this saturday at 3:30pm EST.

I don't know if it's a two day event... anyone know if they play
sunday also? If so, what time?

    	The foursome should be explosive,

    			Jack Nicklaus
    			Greg Norman
    			Nick Faldo
    			Curtis Strange

Geee, I wonder if they'll get nine in before dark :) !!!

With the lack of golf, playing and watching, I am really looking
forward to the Skins game. I see it as a battle between Norman
and Faldo, with Curtis and Jack making halves, but birdieing
holes that Greg or Nick will probably birdie anyway. But who knows,
if anyone of the four gets hot, the other three will have their
work cut out for them to stay even.

Who do you pick as the BIG money winner?

    	I'll pick Faldo.

    	Walta

these things are almost always two days so expect
nine on sat. and nine on sun.
did you see this past weekend. they played two man
scramble on sunday. one of the teams was -12 on sunday.

I think Greg will go home with the most money... It is his type
    of event...

Ya, the RMCC (Ronald McDonald etc...) the tourney that Grag hosts
was quite interesting... With Couples and Floyd being the winning
team by 5 shots... The event donates something in the neighborhood
of $1,000,000 to Ronald McDonald House...!

I selected my order of finish this way:

    Norman
    Faldo
    Strange
    Jack

Jack may get shut out. I watched alittle of the RMCC and he hit some
POOOOOR shots. We'll see what the desert brings. It's a two day event
for sure. 9 Sat. and 9 Sun. TV both days. ABC 3:30 Eastern Sat. not
    sure about Sun.
1114.4Jack may surprise allCHRLIE::HUSTONTue Nov 20 1990 15:1126

This type of event is an agressive players dream and a consitent, par
    mackers nightmare.

Unless they change playing style, Faldo may get shutout. True, he is
an awesome golfer and a favorite in any tournament, but he gets that
way, not by making lots of birdies, but by not making bogeys.

Norman on the other hand makes a ton of birdies, but also lots of
    bogeys at times.

In the skins you won't win squat with a par, you have very little to
loose by being agressive, you figure out of 4 pros, 2 will make
par so you need to go for it.

    I predict:

    Norman
Nicklause (if he gets rolling he can be a birdie machine)
Faldo/Strange (toss up, but neither will make much)

I sure hope that Nick and Curtis loosen up, don't the players usually
    have microphones on?

I think Strange got shut-out last year...I'll bet on him to win...

none of those pro's like to be shut out and usually come back strong
the following year to "prove" it was a fluke the year before...

    anymore....I'll still go with him...

True, Faldo's a par-making machine, but so is/was Strange (who got shut
out year before last, then won it last year). It's not how many birdies
you make, it's when you make 'em. I think Faldo will do all right, and
like his chances to come in first (though I'll be rooting for Norman).

    Nicklaus & Faldo 70,000

Ya, congrats to Strange... He played great...!

There were some great shots made... I don't think I ever saw so many
balls go for a swim as I did in this tourney though...

It was also interesting that the only hole that Jack won, which was
for two skins, he won with a "PAR"...!

Then the sudden death with Faldo and Strange appeared like it would
last for ever (then Faldo finally put one in the water on what was the
fifth or sixth hole of sudden death)...! Faldo wanted to call it a draw
and just split the money... ;-)

BTW, they also announced the players that will be playing in the
seniors skins. Due to a tie in the voting there will be 5 players
in the seniors skins; Nicklaus, Trevino, Palmer, Player, and Chi Chi.

    RE: .11

All though this years skins game was a little mundane, I thought
the were some moments of interest/excitement...!

Curtis's great shot from the rocks, standing on the rocks barefoot
and knocking it to within about 10 feet...! Curtis's shot when he
was reading to tear apart the person that snapped a picture during
his swing, then he saw the shot ended up two feet from the hole...!
Jack needing to make about an eight footer on the 1st hole of
sudden death to be able to continue on, and missing (he had the
shortest of the three birdie putts...!)...! Greg almost getting
home in two on the LONG par 5 with driver/driver (not sure how long
the hole is, but I think the announcer said something about is tee
shot having gone over 300 and having about 300 left to the hole)..!
The first day for the first few holes they were ribbing each other
pretty good, but that didn't last to long. They just aren't the
foursome that will give you the laughs and side action stuff that
a Trevino, Chi Chi, Zoller, etc... will give you, but there was
still some real good golf played...

    	my 2 cents worth...

    Hi,
I guess it didn't quite live up to it's potential considering
the talent involved. It's a bummer to see people out of the hole
right off the tee... tough course or what !

But as Gene said, there were some great shots! Can Faldo putt or
what? His chipping needs a little work ;) .... Curtis looks like
he found a putter he'll be keeping. Jack really struggled with his
game... tough sport, even if you know how/what to do, if you're
not putting in the time "Poof" it goes away.

Is it just me, or was the whole pro tour a really the boring, who gives
a flying youknowwhat it seemed this year. The Senior tour was
interesting early, but it proceeded to become somnambuistic too.
Regular tour was a whole bunch of guys named "joe" winning their first
events. Faldo is the best golfer in the world, but he isn't exciting to
watch. Norman still needs to conquer that six inches between his ears,
Strange went south, Jack is over le hill, etc., etc. moanmoanmaon.

Anybody else less than excited by the caliber of golf played on tour
    this year?
1114.15saturation = boring golf...CSS::GORDONTue Nov 27 1990 14:3213
    re: .14

I tend to agree and think it is because of saturation....too many
good players today. It's the same in pro football/basketball/etc.
add your own sport. Also good golf is not exciting but very much
like chess in that the steady boring player will come out on top
    8 outa 10 times.
Now if we could only get norman/calc/lenny wadkins/ken green
into a skins game it might be more interesting to watch but this last
weekend we had one agressive player and two "grinders" and a "once
was" which didn't make for interesting golf. Am looking forward to
senior skins with chi chi/lee, outa be a good show from entertainment
standpoint the golf will have to wait and see....

I have one thing I would like to mention. With all the charities
and all the needy people in the world today. The homeless, abused
children, battered wives, aids and all the childhood deseases that
pleague our society how can Jack Nichauls and Greg Norman donate thier
% of the winnings to Junior Golf. I mean are these guys living in the
same world as I am? Jack says " yes I am donating to the junior golf
program that I have an endowment fund in and have controll of the
funds". Gag me with a silver spoon. Strange donated to the abused
children of Virginia, Faldo to a London hospital he had visited and
I see them in a new light today for it. I see them a
compassionate, sensitive, real people. I see Jack and Greg. Well two
wrongs don't make a right. I don't feel the same about them.

Should we eliminate Junior Golf? What charities shall we fund, only
those you see as important? Which diseases shall we try to conquer,
Cancer, Alcoholism, AIDS, Luekimia...? Should all funds go first to
feed the starving, homes for the homeless, ... Be certain that all
of your discreationary funds go to these things, no entertainment,
eat only beans and cheap nourishing meals, etc. Before you judge
Norman and Nicklaus, maybe you should know to what charities and
programs they already give - they may use personal funds and give far
more than Faldo or Strange and to much more fitting things. I gave
25 years to Little League as coach and leader, should I be
horse-whipped? What about those Scout meetings and Junior Achievement?

    Back to golf....

I enjoyed seeing Curtis back on the course. He wasn't very hungry this
year, and consequently played poorly. He looked like he's about 90% in
the Skins, maybe next year the best player in the U.S. will be back!

    RE .18
You ask if we should eliminate Junior Gold. Of course not. I did not
suggest or imply Junior Golf should be eliminated.

You ask what funds should we fund, only the ones I see as
important? Of course not. I did not suggest or imply my priorties
     should be that of others.

My point was that this was a chance for these two individuals to make
it known to the thousands of people viewing and listening what was
    important to them. They did.

Should you be horse-whipped for giving 25 years of your time as a
coach and leader? Of course not. Unless of course you know something I
don't. I do know plenty of Little League coaches and leaders that
    should be horse-whipped.

Oh and by the way. I would love to walk in thier mocassins.

Well maybe I just see things differently than some. I do contribute to
several charity organizations in the community but that is not what
this notes file is intended to dicuss. I just intended to voice an
opinion and obviously struck a nerve. so for the sake of the rest of
the noters who don't wish to read the differences in our opinions lets
let it lie. no hard feeling intended. We could could probably argue the

You know who I love to see in Skins is Lee Trevino. Now that guy is
fun to watch play golf. I think it because he is having so much fun.
He's like a little kid out there. Always laughing and joking and

During the event (which I thought was great!, I'm going to try coding
barefoot!!) they talked to Curtis about the less than great year he
had. He said (more or less) that he was so focused on winning a
third straight US OPEN that when he didn't he lost his concentration and
focus for the remainder of the year.
