1096.0. "BIG HIT." by WOTVAX::CROUGHANK () Wed Oct 10 1990 11:09

Please could anyone tell me what the furthest distance a golf ball has been hit
I read note 1083 "Quick Quiz" regarding the furthest hole in one and that
started me thinking about the longest hit. Any replies appreciated.

Thanks Kieran.

              P.S. who is, was Jessi Valentine.

    If memory serves me correctly, I remember reading something about
    a golf ball being hit over 600 yards, but, the ball was teeded up
    at the end of an airport runway, and received the bounce and roll
    from the aspalt. Regardless, its still a little farther then I can
    hit it.

    A ball was hit over 600 yards once with a 5 iron.

    Believe it or not.

    The man who did it was Alan Shepard. The place - THE MOON.

1096.35300 yds with a putter (!)SIOG::OGRADYThu Oct 11 1990 11:549
    A ball was hit over 5300 yds (!) using a putter, once

    It was by a TV presenter on the Concorde. The ball travelled only 15 ft
    in the plane, but over 3 miles in space.....
    ......a bit far fetched, but so's the Moon-shot

1096.4A mere 392 yards per GuinessFINALY::SCHNEIHCHal Schneider-Something's FishyThu Oct 11 1990 20:1714
    According to this month's Golf Journal, Tommie Campbell of Ireland is
    entered in the Guiness Book of World records for the longest drive
    ever in competition. "In July, 1964, he drove a golf ball 392 yards on
    the 18th hole at the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, in County Dublin. It was
    no small feat, certainly not for a man who, at that time, stood 5 feet
    8 inches and weighed 147 pounds. That drive became the longest recorded
    drive in a competition under what could be called normal conditions."

    Certainly no where near as spectacular as some of the previous entries
    but pretty remarkable just the same. This record has stood for over 26
    years even with all the "wonderful" technological advances seen in
    clubs in recent years.

1096.5How about a mile?ODIXIE::QUINNTue Oct 16 1990 11:497
    Bobby Riggs (remember the Billie Jean King tennis match?) once bet
    someone he could hit a golf ball a mile, and he won!

    He went to a frozen lake somewhere, tee'd the ball up and in fact hit
    it much further than a mile.

    I think a group of guys in Dallas actually play through the
    downtown area and hit golf balls 5 miles??

    Don't know if these guys still do it?? Was a few years ago.
