1083.0. "Quick Quiz" by FORTY2::BOONHAM (Chris) Tue Sep 25 1990 16:14

There's a competition being run by Teacher's whisky. The questions are,

	1. What is generally recognised as the longest ever hole in one?
		a) 326 yards
		b) 447 yards
		c) 521 yards

	2. Which of these tournaments is not one of the 4 majors?
		a) US Open
		b) European Open
		c) US Masters

	3. On which course is the 'Road' hole?
		a) Turnberry
		b) St. Andrews
		c) Gleneagles

I've got my answers, but what does everybody else think?

If answer 1 is (b) 447 yds, that's incredible. Any details of when
    where and by whom?

Answer 2 is (b) the European Open is a regular Euro Tour event.

Answer 3 is (b) Road Hole = 17th at St. Andrews (Tommy Nakajima knows
    the answer to that question!)

1083.7the prize...FORTY2::BOONHAMChrisWed Sep 26 1990 13:056
When I posted the note I also thought the answers to 2 and 3 were b, but was
going for 1 a until I read note 499.5.

The prize is a golfing w/e in Scotland in April. The entry needs to be on a
Teachers Whisky beer mat. I picked up the beer mat at the Packhorse PH, Reading
in the UK. Closing date is end of October.

From the Guiness Book of World Records:

	   Longest hole-in-one : 447 yards, by Robert Mitera, 10/7/65
(BTW, he was 21 ot the time, stood 5'6"
                                 tall, and weighed 165 lb)

Longest (woman) : 393 yards, Marie Robie on the 1st at Furnace
                                 Brook GC, 9/4/49

Longest (dogleg) : 480 yards, by Larry Bruce, 11/15/62, at the
5th hole of the Hope CC in Ark.

Is the 1st hole at Furnace Brook 393 yards? Seems the hole is much
    shorter to me.

    re .9

It is about 390 yds, although it plays a lot shorter due to the
steepness of the fairway (there's an old ski lift that runs parallel to
it). Also, there is a big dip in the fairway that adds yardage, since
I believe that yardage is measured along the ground.

BTW, a friend who grew up caddying at Furnace Brook, says that legend
has it that some kids put Robie's ball in the cup before she got to the
green (which you can't see from the tee).
