1072.0. "Celebrity Golfers (Gleason, et al)" by DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN () Thu Sep 06 1990 10:43

I took this out of note 1065 and moved it here to lead off the
topic of "famous/good non-professional celebrity golfers." I remember
seeing a TV golf match back in the 60's between The Great One (Gleason)
and The King (Arnie) that demonstrated just how good he (Gleason) was.
They played 18 holes, split over two days (live, not tape). On the
first 9, Gleason made two incredible putts, one from 40+ and the other
from 60+ feet, and was either ahead by a stroke, or dead even (my
memory fails). Remember, this was Palmer in his prime, before he lost
his putting stroke! And, they were playing at scratch, as I recall.

The back 9 was a different story: Gleason apparently tarried a bit too
long at the 19th celebrating his semi-victory, and could barely manage
to get the clubhead on the ball on the second half of the match. But
for 9 holes, he was as good as there was! He certainly made a believer
    out of Arnold...

    Any other stories about "non-golfers"??

As best and eternally typified by the famous Ed Norton " futzxing"
routine on the old Gleason show.

A fellow from the service from Florida used to say the Gleason was
practically "pro" quality, especially where a $buck was on the table.

Any old Gleason golf stories out there...

1072.1Steve who?ODIXIE::WESTCLGator GolferThu Sep 06 1990 17:0214
Steve Melnyk, the golf commentator and former pro-circuit player, was
an outstanding amateur in the mid-60's. At his home course, the
Brunswick Country Club, Brunswick, GA., Steve was king during his late
high school and college days. During his final year as an amateur,
Steve wanted to participate in both his home course's annual amatuer
invitational and the British Amatuer. Since both tourneys were
scheduled such that travel to Britian prohibited completing the
Brunswick tourney, Steve played only the first round and shot an
outstanding 64 (as I remember). He then departed for Britian. Who won
the tournament that year? Another Steve who obtained considerable fame
at the University of Florida as their football quarterback, and now the
head coach at Florida - Steve Spurrier! I don't remember Spurrier's
winning score, but he was quite an accomplished golfer.

I like watching the Celebs at Pebble Beach, sometimes it's easier to relate
to another hacker than to a pro.

I love the line about Clint Eastwood: "the only guy who carries his
    putter in a holster".

I remember watching that match. On the hole that the great one lost
the match, he had hit his ball into a tree and it stayed there lodged
between some branches. Upon discovering his predicament, and seeing
arnie in good position, he muttered the expression
    	"Treed, and had to concede"

RE. 3 - Yeah, I *thought* I remembered his ball being up a tree!
Thanks for confirming. I'd sure love to get a copy of that match on
video tape. It was a classic.
