1058.0. "Zoran Zoric a sub 60 Shooter" by DPDMAI::VENEZIO (MY other car is a GOLFCART) Wed Aug 22 1990 20:38

I read in today's paper a guy named Zoran Zorik shot 59 in the US Golf
Tours Turtle Classic at the par 71 Terrapin Hills GC in Alabama. He
joins Al Gieberger who shot 59 in Memphis on the PGA Tour and Homero
Blancas who shot 55 (yes 55) as an amateur in the Premier Invitational
in Longview TX back in '61.

    All competitive rounds.

Do you think anyone in today's game will shoot 59 on the regular tour.
Play is getting much better and the equipment and conditioning are
    certainly conducive to low scores.

How about a course you think may give up the low number.

BTW, Zoran is an Aussie and recently graduated from U of Houston. A few
good players have come out of that school.

I think that there are several players on the tour who are
capable of shooting a 59. The name Norman comes to mind right
of the bat. He can post a lot of birdies and eagles real fast
so if he just stayed out of trouble for an entire round who
knows how low he can shoot ! Ken Green might have a chance at
it, he has a lot of subpar holes but tends to get bogies to
offset them. Ian Bakker-Finch also can fire some low scores.
Many players have the talent to shoot low scores, you just
need a couple of breaks for it to happen . If I can string
5-6 pars together then these guys can just as easily string
    birdies.
As far as course go, just about any of the courses played
at the Bob Hope Desert CLassic could yield a low score, TPC
of Conn. is really short for the pros, Harbortown is relatively
easy for the straight hitters, Kemper Lakes, etc.
BUt what is really amazing, is that with all this high-tech
golf equipment, better conditioned players, better instructed
players, etc. , we don't see tournament records being broken.

If somebody EVER shoots 59 at Harbour Town, I'll be a Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtle and do 100,000 on "Super Mario Brothers."

It ain't gonna happen at Kemper Lakes, either. It's loooong and
tougher than the past PGA made it look.

Remember now, we aren't talking about guys that play like us !!!
They play a whole different game than most of us can ever hope
to play. But okay, maybe Harbor Town was a bad choice !!

1058.7How did he do dat ?WALTA::LENEHANstick-emThu Aug 23 1990 18:329

Speaking of Al Gieberger does anyone recall how his historic round
was scored on each nine? Did he have to birdie the 18th to
break 60? Or hang on and make par? Either way the pressure
    	must have been immense !

    	Just curious,

They did a feature on Geiberger's 59 on the US network that was
covering the Memphis Classic this year.
My memory isn't brilliant on it but this is close to what happened.

Geiberger started on the 10th in the 2nd round and this happened

    PAR,BIRDIE,PAR,PAR,BIRDIE,BIRDIE,BIRDIE,EAGLE,BIRDIE = 29 OUT

    BIRDIE,BIRDIE,PAR,PAR,BIRDIE,BIRDIE,PAR BIRDIE,BIRDIE = 30 BACK = 59!!

I believe he was going for a record equalling 8 sub-par holes in a row
until he parred the 3rd ( his twelfth ).
He did have to make a birdie on the last, which was a 12 footer , i
    think.

    Some round of golf.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the next best round to the 59
that week in Memphis was a 68. If true, it makes the feat really
    amazing.

martin o'g ( who remembers his first 59 for 18 holes, even though it
was on a pitch and putt course ).

Olazabal came close yesterday. he needed 2 birdies on the last four.
he missed a 3 footer,6 footer and a ten footer. thta's fifty eight
    if he makes them both.

    hi Martin,

Thanks.. that was great to come up with the info !

It got my heart pumpin' just reading the incredible scoring Al
did ! I'd love to hear his thoughts about the putt on 9 (his 18th)
if it was a 12 footer... that must have been THE most exciting
moment of his life, watching the ball roll the 12 feet and find
the bottom of the cup !!!!

Does anyone have any quotes, or any info from Al Geiberger about
the round? It would be fun to read .

    	thanks Walta

I beleive Ian Woosnam shot a 60 in a tournament he played in last
month, close but not close enough.

To get back to Gieberger and the rest of the scores, in his other 3
rounds he shot over 70 in each of them, so he won the tournament
without having a score in the 60'. If my memory serves me right I
believe preferred lies were in operation throughout the tournament.

Olazabal did come close. He shot 61 at Firestone. Not exactly your
    Pitch and Putt.

A couple of short putts and we see history made again. How ironic we
talk about 59 and somebody comes close.

Maybe I'll make an entry in the Hole N One file

1058.13Geiberger's commentsDEMSUP::BLAISDELLSign up for Challenge Cup 90Fri Aug 24 1990 17:0316
I saw an interview with Geiberger recently about the 59. He said that
he was making everything from anywhere on the greens. None of them went
in the side door. They were all going in dead center.

On his last putt, after he hit it, he turned around to see the crowd
reaction because he knew it was going in! Amazing. He said it was the
   biggest thrill in his life.

He mentioned that he was also pleased that it happened on one of the
longest and most difficult courses that the tour played. It wasn't a
   cheap 59. Hey, I'd take even a cheap 59!

Wish I could remember where I saw this interview......

Homero Blancas shot 59 while he was in the U. of Houston in a college
match. Jimmy Grant was a teammate of his and said he did it "with a
SEVERE hangover..." I've got a friend from Illinois, Doug Dechert, who
also shot 59 in college. I asked him what it felt like to shoot 59 and
he said "Aw, I didn't hit it that great, I just made everything..." I
saw Doug shoot 72 at Crumpin-Fox with double bogies on #9 and #18, so I
can tell you that this cat can play...

Dan Jenkins' book "The Dogged Victims of Inexorable Fate" (great
golf book!) covers the Blancas round of 55. Now , Homero can play,
so question. But Jenkins points out that the Premier or Presidents'
course, or whatever it's called, was a short, flat piece of junk.
It doesn't sound like much of a course.

Big Al, on the other hand, did it under tournament pressure on a
"real" PGA course. I think they were playing preferred lies, because
Memphis in that year was in bad shape. I don't think Geiberger ever
turned the ball, though. And anyway, I think a beat-up course is
a bit harder to score on, don't you?

Olazabal shooting 61 at Firestone has to be one of the greatest
    rounds ever played. That's a 7300 yard par 70!

I rented a golf video that showed the conditions under which Watson
shot something like 68 in some tournament in the early 80s. Ah,
it was the Memorial. You can't believe it. It was about 35 degrees
out, raining, with 60+ mph winds. Trees were falling over. To break
par under those conditions is incredible.
