1051.0. "Need help with scoring system!" by HXOA01::MOWBRAY (from Newfoundland) Wed Aug 15 1990 19:52

    Here in this Canadian Province (the most easterly) Digital's customers
    all get together (with a little help from us) and have a charity
    Golf Day. The proceeds get donated to the local Children's Hospital
    and every one (but me) has a good time !

    To demonstrate my knowledge of Golf, I am not even sure if I pay
    left or right handed. I've only ever played 2 games, one in the
    seventies and one in the eighties (89 to be exact) (that is years
    not scores) ..... anyway, it falls on my shoulders to organize the
    Golf game most of which is not a problem but the difficulty is that
    I need a scoring system that will treat everyone fairly.

    We have a mix of players, Senior managers (who spends his whole
    day on the course down to lowly programmers who equivalent to me
    in golfing expertise.

    In the past, we have used things called Stableford and Calloway,
    however both of these take (apparently) a lot of work at the end
    of the game to tally up the scores. We use a system where everyone
    starts at once and so within an hour or so will finish at once.

    There is less than an hour between the ending and the presentation
    of awards and so the Digital staff have to move pretty quick to
    do any complex/repetitive calculations in order to calcullate the
    winners.

    In summary then, the need is for a scoring/handicapping system
    that is fair to all and is also quick/easy/accurate.

    I hope someone out there can help .

    Thanks   Graham

1051.1May not be fair but could be funCHRLIE::HUSTONWed Aug 15 1990 21:0017

    One method that you may find attractive, though probably not fair to
    all is a random draw for a scramble/best ball tournament.

    Simply randomly make the teams from drawing names, then hold a normal
    4/2 man scramble or best ball. The drawback is that you are bound to
    get some team that is either real good (all good golfers) or a team
    that is not so good (all the less talented golfers), so someone may
    complain.

    Another idea is to have (I have no idea what it is called) a tournament
    that is made of several randomly drawn holes, that are not chosen until
    the end. This also would probably not be all that fair since the good
    golfers will tend to play better anyway.

1051.2Ask the Club to do it!NRADM::MCKINNONgrab a bag of bats, killerThu Aug 16 1990 11:275
    Many clubs that allow outings, such as the one you are having, have the
    knowledge, tools and expertise to score the tournament for the group.
    Ask the club pro if they would take care of it for you.

1051.3Kracaw formatNSG018::STOPERAThu Aug 16 1990 12:1322
    My family holds a tourny ever year, we play 2 days and have about 70
    golfers, here's what we do, we call it a Kracaw format (because we are
    Polish), on the first day we group all the golfers into A,B,C and D
    flights, A's are usually 0-15 handicaps, B's 15-22, C's have a handicap
    and D's shouldn't be on the course but we let anyone play, the format
    is:

    A player score counts on the 5 hardest handicap holes
    B player score counts on the next 5 hardest handicap holes
    C player score counts on the next 4 hardest handicap holes
    D player score counts on the 4 easyiest holes

    Everyone must pick up after double par

    Just add all the above score up and that's your team score

    Winning score this year was 96 (I think), we always give a prize to
    high team

    The 2nd day we play a scramble

1051.4Scramble when in doubt..USEM::VOUTSELASTue Aug 21 1990 15:467

    I agree with the scramble answer, especially with a wide range
    of golfing experience. It is fun and you get to hit from
    distances"unfamiliar" to your game, and a lot faster!

1051.5Thanks for a great suggestionOTOO01::MOWBRAYfrom NewfoundlandTue Sep 25 1990 12:0211
    It is now some time since I was in this file. Our tournament is over
    and I must say it was a great success.

    We simply followed the advice in .2 and asked the club to do it. When
    I told the guy that had arranged this over the last 3 years that all we
    had to do was ask, he was annoyed !

    Funny how the most obvious slips by sometimes. Although I dont know
    you MCkinnon, I am deeply in your debt as your suggestion allowed me to
    play. This was the first time that the organizer got to play. Now if
    I can only get down from 150!
