1026.0. "seniors" by WARPII::WARFIELD (Gone Golfing) Mon Jul 23 1990 22:30

Did anyone tape the Seniors tournament this past weekend? The were playing at
Grand Traverse in Michigan? I set up my VCR but forgot to press the timer
button so when I got home the tape was still at the beginning.

I'm going to be up that way on vacation in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping to
play there & am interested in checking out the course.

I've played golf in that area and specifically played "The Bear" at
Grand Traverse. I can give you some info if interested, like yardages
etc. I have a card and yardage book here at work.

Please do I need to start thinking about this vacation. We are going
to be staying at Schuss Mt. but Grand Traverse is a reasonable drive
away. The Bear's reputation even extends to the East coast.

Any other comments on courses on Michigan's golf coast are appreciated.
Last time we were up there we played Boyne Highlands, two of the
     prettiest courses I've ever played.

There is quite a bit of good information on golf courses in the
Northern Michigan area in a recent issue of Golf Digest.

Two pieces of advice for The Bear: bring lots of money ($100 greens
fees), and bring lots of golf balls.

There are some other exceptional courses in Michigan. Boyne Highlands
is one, Shanty Creek is another. There is even one course where each
hole is a replica of a famous hole from other courses and they were built from
the original architecture plans. The name escapes me at the moment, but
it's in Golf Digest. Sorry.

One last thing about The Bear. I have a friend who lives in Traverse City and
he has played for half price. They run specials occasionally. I don't
remember the exact terms but he had to play at an "off" time. It was very
late in the day when he started, but he was still able to play 18 before
dark. He even got a coupon for a free round because the pro was worried
they wouldn't be able to finish before dark.

I would suggest you give the Grand Traverse Resort a call about it.
I can get more info if you wish (or perhaps money is no object...)

1026.4More Michigan golf infoWJOUSM::BRADSHAWWed Jul 25 1990 13:3849
Here's some info on golf in that stretch of Michigan.

    Course Par Yardage Comments

The Bear 72 Blue-7065 Jack Nicklaus design.

                          Red- 5281

I played here about 3 years ago, and at that time it cost around $75.
Would definitely recommend playing there once.

The Legend 72 Black-6764 Arnold Palmer design.
                          Blue-6269 PHONE-616-533-6076

This course is at the Shanty Creek Schuss Mountain Resort. Played
there back in May. Expensive, around $70-80.

A couple of replies back someone mentioned a course that was a replica
of a famous architects work. That course is called the Donald Ross
Memorial and it located at Boyne USA Resort.

    Yardages Blue 6840 PHONE- 1-800-GO-BOYNE
                White 6308
                  Red 4977

Each hole is a replica of famous Ross holes from famous courses around
the world. At the time I played here, back in May, it was relatively
cheap, around $25. But that was just prior to In Season rates kicking
in. I loved this course so much, we went back and played it a second
    time.
The other course we played at Boyne was called The Heather.

Yardages Blue- 7218 Original design by Robert Trent Jones.
                  Gold- 6554
                 White- 6090 Phone- 1-800-GO-BOYNE
                   Red- 5263

Nice course, and again it was fairly cheap at the time I played there,
    with off-season rates.

If your out there and you happen in to the town of Petosky, stop by the
Days Inn and say hi to my brother in law Steve, the owner. He's the
one who takes me to all these great courses.

Money is always an object. If you play cheaper you get to play more often!
You must start pretty late if the pro was worried about finishing the round
as I recall because you are on the western edge of the time zone & pretty
far north it stays light to almost 10:00 PM!

Re: .4

Thanks for your info too. When we were up there last we got to play both
the Heather & the Moor. They are two super courses. My understanding is that
Robert Trent Jones built one course and then they patched in a second course
splitting the original course in two. If you could play just the original
course I believe it would rank right up there with the best in the world.

God I can't wait....
