1019.2Golf courses near the DEC ALF facilitySAHQ::CONNELLJWed May 19 1993 08:16102
A couple of buddies from Chicago came down this week. We've played or
are going to play 6 courses in 6 days. Here is the liste of the courses
and the approximate green's fees with a cart.

    Stone Mountain
    --------------

Has two 18 hole courses . One called Stonemont . The other one is
comprised of two 9 hole courses Lakemont & Woodmont. Both courses are
great and the greens fees are around $ 38.00.

    Centennial Golf Club
    --------------------

This course is located about 30 - 45 minutes southwest of the DEC
Alpharetta facility. We've played it today from the Gold tees. It's as
good a public course layout as I've ever played anywhere. Very scenic
with rolling hills & creeks. Greens fees are approximately 40.00 .

To get there from the ALF facility take GA 400 south to exit # 7 which
is Holcomb Bridge Road. Turn right so you are going west on Holcomb
Brifge Road which will turn into Route 92. Take route 92 west past
Interstate 575 to the 5th or 6th traffic light which is called
Woodstock Road. Turn left so you are going South on Woodstock Road and
Centennial is on the right side or west side of the road not that far
    south of route 92.

    River Pines Golf Club
    ---------------------

This is the newest course to open near the DEC ALF facility. The greens
fees are $ 40.00 for 18 holes. They also have a nine hole par 3 course
, driving range , putting practice green , & a green with sand traps to
practice out of. For a new course it's a very tough and scenic course
    from the back tees.

To get to River Pines from the DEC ALF facility take GA 400 southbound
and get off at exit # 7 which is Holcomb Bridge Road. Go up the ramp
and turn left or east onto Holcomb Bridge Road. Take Holcomb Bridge
Road east to the 2nd light which is Old Alabama Road. Turn left On Old
Alabama and keep following it for a few miles. River Pines will be on
the right hand side of the road just past The Country Club of the South
which is a private and ritzy course where the senior PGA had a tournament
    there last year.

    Lake Lanier Islands
    -------------------

There are two courses at Lake Lanier. One is the Stouffer's Pine Island
resort which I've never played but I hear that it's a great course.
They also charge $ 59.00 for green's fees and a cart. The other course
is the Lake Lanier Islands Hilton resort and golf club. From the back
tees this is one of the most scenic and toughest courses that I have
ever played. The green's fees with a cart are around $ 47.50 but well
worth every penny. To get to the Lake Lanier Islands resort from the
DEC ALF facility take GA 400 northbound and get off at exit # 14 which
is called State route 20. Take a left on 20 so you are going eastbound
and follow the signs to the Lake Lanier Islands resort. I believe you
turn left or north on a street called Peachtree Industrial. The Lake
Lanier Islands golf course has been ranked as one of the top 5 resort
courses in the country. It has 18 holes with 13 of them on the water.

    The Champions Club of Alpharetta
    --------------------------------

This is the closest public course that I know of near the DEC ALF
facility. Very nice course and clubhouse I beleive that the green's
fees are around $ 45.00 . To get to the Champions club from the DEC ALF
facility take a left out of the DEC parking lot so you are going west
on Windward Parkway. Take Windward Parkway until it dead ends which is
Alpharetta Highway or Route 9. Turn left or south on Alpharetta
Highway. Not far down is a shopping center with an Ingle's food store.
The road is called Hopewell Road. Turn right on Hopewell and follow the
signs to the Champions Club. It's about 4 - 5 miles down on the right
    hand side.

    Other courses
    -------------

According to the leatest and greatest issue of our phone book here are
the remainder of the golf courses that are listed in the Roswell /
Alpharetta yellow pages. I really don't know how to get to these
courses , how far they are from the DEC ALF facility , or how much the
    green's fees are.

Chateau Elan Golf Club --- From the DEC ALF facility take GA 400
nothbound and get off at exit # 14 which is Route 20. Take a left on
route 20 so that you are going eastbound. Take route 20 east to
Interstate 85. Take Interstate 85 northbound and get off at exit # 48
and follow the signs for Chateau Elan. The phone book lists the address
    as Highway 211 & I 85 in Braselton , GA. The phone number is (404) 339
    - 9838.

Royal Oaks Golf Club --- 253 Summit Ridge Drive Centersville , GA
    Telephone number is (404) 681 - 1717.

I'm sure that there are others but these are the ones that I have
played personnally or have seen in our local yellow pages. Hope this
    info helps you out.

1019.3GA course playBUSY::PEASLEEFri Jun 04 1993 00:3714
I played Lake Lanier Islands last week after playing Chateau Elan. I
enjoyed Elan...very quick and true greens, nice layout..but the
snakes..geez. There were a number of fairways boardered by creeks with
signs saying that it was a poisonous snake habitat and suggesting that
you drop a ball and continue. Fee was ~$50 for 18 and ~$15 for the 2nd
    round.

After Elan, Lake Lanier's greens seemed very slow and "long in the
tooth". A very senic course with 13 holes along the lake. There were
2-3 par fours over water where a long ball might make the green in 1.

Southerness, about ~30min east of Atlanta was enjoyable. Fees were
    $39.50 w/cart and a 2nd 18 was ~$13.
