975.0. " shoulder and back problems" by IOENG::STJEAN () Mon Jun 18 1990 19:55

    Hello,
this is my first season playing golf, I bought my clubs a couple of weeks
ago and I have been at the driving range three times a week, I have
been getting some pointers on hitting the ball from friends that play
often but what I'm starting to notice is that my right shoulder and lower
back are starting to hurt. Is this normal because I'm not use to the
new type of movement I'm doing, or might I be doing something wrong on
my stance or swing. I seem to be starting to hit the ball O.K, thier not
very long shots but I'm keeping it straight, i'm just wondering if this
is normal for a new player or should I have someone watch me incase I'm
    not doing it correctly.

It could be anything from sore muscles for using them or an injury.

Chances are if you were active/atheletic before starting golf that it
is not muscles, if it goes away shortly (a day or two) and does not
come back then it is probably muscles.

Take a day or 2 off and try again. If it comes back everytime you
play it is probably an injurt (tendonitis/bursitis) and you should
    see a doctor.

    Dear new guy:
I am a 18 year "golf veteran" and both rotator cups are worn.
The right one worse than left due to baseball(pitching)

The left one due to bad swing strain. IF i swing bad, I feel it
it in left bicep and shoulder the next day. I have actually broken
blood vessels in my left bicep area more than once!

I need cortisone shots about every 5 or 6 years, and If I keep it
    up, surgery will be next.

They should not hurt If swinging with right tempo and the upper
body is "quiet". If the upper body is "herky jerky" with motion
your going to have "my" problems, and you don't want that!

As far as back problems, I only get spasms once in a great while
so I'm "sitting on my swing" pretty good and I'm only 5'9",
    so I think I'm safe.

    My two cents worth..

A relaxed golf swing should not cause any soreness in shoulder, neck or
back muscles. I suggest you visit a pro right away and set up a
training plan if you want to learn the golf swing. Listen to your
friends and their feedback but the Pro will provide the long term
    answers.
