969.0. "Swing-weight thoughts !!!" by RAYBOK::COOPER (MAD HACKER) Wed Jun 13 1990 16:36

         I was hitting balls into my net the other night and
    got to thinking about swingweight. I don't build clubs so
    my knowledge is limited to my own experiences. I have a set
    of perimeter-weight clubs that have given me fits for the
    last 18 months. I recently got back my old set of forged
    blades and have started to hit the long irons well again.
       The only differnces between the sets are grip-size and
    swingweight. The forged set has regular grips and weighs in
    at a d-2 swingweight. The p-w set has 1/32 oversize grips
    and a swingweight of d-0. I don't feel the gripsize is the
    culprit here. The forged set feels better ie. I can feel the
    head of the club and know what it is doing whereas with the
    p-w set I can hardly tell the clubhead is there. I never thought
    that a couple of points could make such a difference but it
    sure has for me. Anyone else have interesting experiences with
    swing-weighting ??

969.1Exact same shafts...?MSEE::KELLEYCustom club fitting/club repairsWed Jun 13 1990 17:026

    Hi MH,

    The two sets or irons have the exact same shafts, brand and flex?

969.2More data !!!RAYBOK::COOPERMAD HACKERThu Jun 14 1990 15:199
    Hi Gene,
       The p-w clubs have a stiff flex steel shaft and the forged
    irons have the original True Temper regular flex steel shafts.
    These shafts are approx. 13 years old. I hit the short irons
    best with the p-w irons and have better success in the 2-5
    irons using the forged set. I hit the forged short irons fine,
    just get more distance with the p-w's.

969.3Then they aren't the same...MSEE::KELLEYCustom club fitting/club repairsThu Jun 14 1990 15:2710

    Hi MH,

    Then there are major differences between the two sets, it isn't just
    the swingweight and grip size. It is the combination of the 2
    swingweight points and the stiff shaft on the PW clubs that is causing
    you to have less head feel with them...

969.4It is always something !!!RAYBOK::COOPERMAD HACKERThu Jun 14 1990 19:175
    Gene,
      I figured it had to be more than just swingweight !! That would
    be to easy.

969.5Location of weight matters, tooBROKE::PALPaul LemaireMon Jun 18 1990 18:504
    Another factor to consider is the heel/toe weight distribution of
    the clubheads.
