966.0. "Full Contact Golf!!" by NRADM::MCKINNON (grab a bag of bats, killer) Mon Jun 11 1990 11:31

Played Passaconaway in Lychfield, NH yesterday for the first (and most
probably) the last time. It's DANGEROUS. It's a real "Stooges" type
of course. The fairways are narrow and run side by side. There are very
few trees. The word for the day was FORE! People ducking all over the
place. Some of the greens are close to the next tees which also makes it
interesting. The course was built on farm land and on half as much as it
really needed. And to top it off, it costs $25 (without a cart)! We
(a three-some) quit after 9 holes (in 2 1/2 hours) and then went in and
asked for money back (which we did get). I've heard some people say
they like it, but I'll tell you, it was scary out there. At times the
group behind us was walking right up in front of us as we were teeing
off. And I don't think they even realized it. I almost got hit once
and the person who hit the ball (from off the previous tee) didn't even
yell anything. Fortunately the people I was playing with were paying
attention and they warned me. Sometimes you can't see who's in the
other fairways so they have no warning that they're about to be clonked
in the head. When I golf, I want to be thinking about hitting the ball
    not getting hit by one.

    Just my opinion.

Len, I think played that course once and your fears are well founded. I only
lasted seven holes before I ran for my life. If I remember correctly I
was standing on a tee and about 35 to 50 yrds behind me and only about
twenty yrds to the right was another foursome teeing off. I thought to
myself, this is absolutly rediculous I could be killed. The fairways,
if memory serves me were very, very thin. One fairway I hit dead center
and both the right and left sides of the ball were in the rough. Now
    thats tight.

I play at Litchfield in the DEC league. And I don't know of any
situation like the one you described. Granted there are tees
close together, but in order for you to be in any danger the
guy teeing off will have to hit the ball 90 degrees off his mark.

Personally I like a course which is open like Litchfield. I don't
know how many times while playing at Amherst while hitting the
ball over trees, then when I get to my ball only to find out that
there was a group of players there. With an open field at least
you can seel the people you're going to hit 8*) 8*). My golf
partner got hit in the head last year at Amherst. We were standing
on the 10th tee and someone was hitting his 2nd shot on the 15th.
The tee is blocked by treesso he couldn't see us and we couldn't
see him. If we had known he was there and hitting his ball we would
	be watching for him.

I also play in the DEC league at Pasaconoway (Litchfield), I have yet
to see any situations that were dangerouse, sure some fairways are
close together, but so far I have not seen or heard of anything
    happening.

I also feel that the course is "decpetively tight", off the tee
everything looks open, but the fairways are narrow and are lined with
mounds, not fun to play off. Also the greens are set up as to greatly
give an advantage to an incoming shot from the fairway. From the
rough you usually need to carry a bunker or some other problem, and
since it is usually "breezy" there, this is not the ideal approach.

Overall I like the course, some tough driving holes and a fairly nice
layout. I do however think they should have forgotten the development
land and put some of the holes over there.

The only complaint I have about the course is the distance the back 9
is from the clubhouse. I don't mind walking, it's just a little
inconvenience when you park your car and then you have to pay and then
walk back past your car to get to the fron 9.
