929.0. "Best TV Coverage?" by CLOSUS::DCHAVEZ (Dale - KDT Colo Spgs) Mon Apr 30 1990 13:44

    Is it my imagination, or does NBC have the worst camera coverage of all
    the networks that carry golf? It's very hard to pick up the ball in
    flight with NBC, yet ABC and CBS seem to have no problem following
    the ball from the moment it leaves the players clubs.

    ABC seems to have more high-level camera shots (cameras mounted on
    cranes), which I think are great. CBS seems to have better mobile
    camera shots however (except when ABC carries the majors). But NBC
    just doesn't seem to cut the mustard when it comes to televising the
    game.

    However, NBC's ace-in-the-hole has got to be Johnny Miller; he's a
    refreshing change from Venturi and Peter Allis (is that his name?). I
    think the jury is still out on Gumbel though. He's very knowledgeable
    about the game but comes across somewhat arrogant sometimes. I think
    the best broadcast pair would have to be Miller/McCord. Gary McCord
    keeps the game in perspective, and adds some humor when appropriate.

     I hope you really meant to pick on Ben Wright on CBS and not Peter Allis
     on ABC. I think Allis does a super job with the majors that ABC cover.
     I would be interested in hearing him on lesser tournaments.

    Dale,

       I agree with your comments about Johnny Miller. He does give
    you a good insight into the shots that the golfers are facing.
    Do you know if he has offically resigned from the tour?

    "I wonder what he's going to give her if he wins?"

       - Peter Alliss on Nick Faldo's caddy at the Masters.

    On the whole the commentary from the BBC (most of the UK golf coverage)
    is OK. It's fairly 'laid back' so it doesn't really get on your nerves.
    The people are usually ex-golfers or knowledgeable enough to make an
    intelligent comment if the player makes a bad swing, etc.

    You have to like Mark Rolfing too he is pretty good BUT?Bob Trumpy
    give me a break he knows as much about golf as Howard Cosell.Joel
    myers sounds like a radio DJ not a golf announcer.

    I like Ben Wright maybe because he and Mccord(who is great) are
    always baiting each other.

    The other guy I like is Peter Kostis who does USA broadcasts.

929.5Boycott NBC ?GRANPA::AKINGSBERRYMon Apr 30 1990 17:169
    I think Johnny Miller is the best golf announcer on T.V. but
    NBC makes me sick. I tape the tournaments so I don't have to
    put up with their commercials. Even so, with NBC it seems like
    I only have to lift my finger off of the fast-forward button
    for a few seconds at a time. In two hours of coverage they
    must run close to 50 minutes of commercials. I think anything
    over 10 minutes an hour is excessive and in poor taste.

929.6Ben WrongGRANPA::RFAGLEYMon Apr 30 1990 18:517
    I have alot of trouble listening to Ben Wright's nausiating patter.
    Even Gumble doesn't bore me with as much endless dribble as Wright.
    I turn the sound down when coverage reaches Wright's hole(s).

    We need more Johnny Millers!

929.7Peter Allis...Well Well WellCHEFS::NEWPORTPTue May 01 1990 10:567
    Do you US noters ever get to hear Peter Allis commentating ??

    He's our main commentator over here in England and has his own
    unique style which I guess you either love or you hate. Just wonder
    what the opinion is of him over in the US??

     He is one of the commentators on ABC during the US & British Opens.
     ABC uses a format where one announcer covers the telecast from a
     central location with roving experts following the leading groups.

929.9Longhurst, short on verbiageDICKNS::F_MCGOWANZoot who?Wed May 02 1990 09:558
    In an earlier, related topic, someone recalled the late Henry
    Longhurst, whose "minimalist" approach to commentary should be
    emulated by just about all the network windbags. The example given
    was Longhurst's dry "Well, there you have it" after someone's shot
    had plunged into a water hazard...in other words, let the event
    speak for itself (isn't that what distinguishes TV from radio?).
