923.0. "Golf in Mass ?" by LARVAE::PROUDFOOT () Wed Apr 18 1990 17:44

    Hi

    Some friends and I are hoping to play some golf while visiting the
    Boston area in July. Could any of you advise me on the requirements for
    playing in the area? The sort of thing I wish to understand is;

    Do you need to be a member of a golf club, i.e. have a handicap
    certificate, or any other documentation - such as insurance etc... ?

    Do you need to book in advance?

    What does golf cost, we will be based in Boston and have a week and a
    car and little to do but golf (Dream stuff!!!!!!).

    Can one get a local course guide?

    Can you hire clubs, at what sort of $ ?

    Would be a great help for us to have some idea of what to expect.

    No. The only time you need to be a member is if the course is
         private. There are many public courses around so you will
         not have a problem here.

    > Do you need to book in advance?

    Most courses let you reserve tee times. It's a good idea to do
    this instead of taking pot luck. Courses usually accept tee times
    a week in advance.

    On the average, you'll be looking at $18-$20 for 18 holes of golf.

    > Can one get a local course guide?

    There are books on golf courses in New England. You might want
    to check in your local bookstore.

    > Can you hire clubs, at what sort of $ ?

    Most places do rent clubs and they cost around $7-$10.

    I agree with the previous reply, with one exception. Most
    of the courses in Mass that even allow reserved T times, will only
    accept them 2-3 days in advance (not a week). This can be seen by
    looking at the list of Mass Golf courses that are open to the public
    which was published in today's Boston Globe.
