904.0. "MOST MEMORABLE HOLES PLAYED REGULARLY" by RAYBOK::COOPER (MAD HACKER) Tue Mar 27 1990 22:11

Most of us have played at a lot of courses and must
have a favorite hole or one that is a special "monster".
How about hearing about those special holes and what makes
    them so !
My favorite monster hole is at the Lake Chabot muni
course in Oakland, Cal. It is approx. 650 yds. par 6
narrow tree lined fairway first 250 yards, left turn
    60 degrees/ steep downhill 200 more yards/ 200 yards
uphill out of the bottom of the gully to a blind green.
I have stood at the edge of the hill after a perfectly
placed drive, ripped a 3-wood across the canyon at the green
just to watch it float off into the depths. It is a lot of fun
to finish your round on this great hole !! There are great
views of the San Francisco bay area from this course !!!!!

904.3Not long, but miserable!DICKNS::F_MCGOWANZoot who?Wed Mar 28 1990 22:5819
Well, it's far from a monster in terms of length, but it's a special
nemesis for me...one of those that make a bogey feel like a birdie:
the 5th at Millwood, on the card at a mere 390 yards, but it plays
more like 490. Most tee shots land short of the hill, leaving a
long iron to a shallow green, surrounded by a bunker on the right
and a "magnetic" pond on the left. If you're careless with the tee
shot, you may go right, into the trees (prison), or end up in a fair-
way bunker on the left. If you overclub on the second shot, to make
sure you clear the water, you can easily end up in a bunker behind
the green, or possibly across the road (OB). A long hitter should
try to carry the hill on the drive, preferably fading the shot to
miss all the trees down the right side; and then have a medium/short
iron to the green. Otherwise, the smart play is to lay up on the
second short, avoiding all the trouble an errant long iron can find,
and try to get up and down in 2. Oh, yeah, it's a slight dogleg
    right.

904.413th at CfareNSG018::STOPERAThu Mar 29 1990 17:1011
I really like the 13th hole at Charmingfare, it only about 320 yards
long (gene, please correct me if i'm wrong), up hill, stright ahead. I
like it because off the tee you have to start thinking, because there
are trees, a stream and ob to the right and to the left more woods. The
landing area is pretty narrow. What do you hit, driver and have a sw to
the green, 1 iron, 2 iron??, the 2nd shot you'd better be short or on
the green, there's a trap to the left and a stone wall (ob over it) to
the right, btw since it's up hill, you'd better take an extra club. The
green is also difficult because it has some good breaks in it.

I'll put this in for me and especially my partner Tom !!

the 17th hole at Juniper Hill in Northboro Mass. 220 yd par 3

When the tees are back this is a very tough hole !!

It's all carry over water with more water on the right and a couple
menacing trees on the left ! If you hit too long your on a very
steep bank with deep rough ! You can wimp out and hit to open fairway
to the left and hope for a chip and a putt.

904.610th and 11th at Sugarloaf Golf Club.DNEAST::FREEMAN_KEVIThe Squeeky Wheel = NeglectWed Apr 25 1990 13:31149

Gene, you may recall the 10th and the 11th at Sugarloaf. These are not
monstrously long at all with the exception of the elevation difference
from tee to green. The 10th is a 275-355 par 4 with so much sand to
contend with you'd swear you were at the beach and with the Carrabassett
river tucked behind the green... Both tee's are elevated and for those
in carts will get a feeling as to what its like to drive in mountain
road rallies. The 11th is a 200-222 par 3 that most folks hit 7-8 irons
as the shear drop will cause the ball to carry to the green/landing
area, again with the river coming into play just in front of the quite
	large sloped green.

As with all of the "Loaf" most of the holes have been cut through trees
and are quite a factor. Three of the thirteen dog legs are double dog
legs and shot placement is critical to attempt any cutting of corners.
There is sand on every hole, fairways are quite narrow and some will
argue that they are the best in the state. Put it this way I very
seldom take divots and here I can get some big tails. There is water
to contend with on 9 of the holes. Robert Trent Jones Jr. was the
designer and I quote him from the card "There are lots of good courses
in new England but there is nothing that compares with this one." As
with the Samoset carts must stay in the paths and no 90 degree cuts.
Carts must be used prior to 1:00 pm. Tee times are a must. Fee's
	should be $30 this year.

To play the tenth I'll append the VAX golf game tenth hole to the bottom
of this reply. I've developed all but the last 8 holes if anyone wants
	them.

Regards Freebie, I'm back, had to take a vacation from notes, it got
                          to be an addiction.

Gene, 3 pieces 8^) (1 piece = 1 hour or 60 mins for those that value
                        diversity 8^)

    Roland,

Take I295 through S.Portland to I95 North 60+ miles to Augusta. Take
the third exit after the Augusta toll booth, exit 31B rte. 27 west.
Head on 27 west (Augusta plant is about 1 mile from the exit) to you get
to the other side of Farmington. You will need to make a right hand turn
and stay on 27W at the juncture of rte. 4 and 27. The next major town you
will hit will be Kingsfield, stay on 27. This section of road will snake
along the Carrabassett River (Watch out for the pulp trucks 8^).
Eventually you will come to the township of Carrabassett Valley. You will
be traveling through a few small mountains until the "Loaf" will unfold
and stare you in the face. You can tell your close when you see the ski
slopes cut through the Mt. If you get to Eustis you've gone to far.
Just stay on 27. I'd say about 3 hours from S. Portland. Let me know
when you plan on going as a bunch of us DECies will be venturing soon.

    Regards Freebie,
