    	Arnie won the top money in the 1990 seniors skins game with
    	$240,000 (8 skins), Jack was second with $140,000 (8 skins),
    	Lee was 3rd with $70,000 (This was a misprint in the Globe)

    Wasn't it great to see lee's mode swings and the seriousness of Gary?

    I was very impressed by the driving distance and accuracy/placement of
    Jack, but then I am a very big Jack fan.
    Arnie looked as if he had his golf game in better shape than Jack, but
    Jack seemed to be the premier player of that group.

    I hope at 60 that I can play as well in my "group" of golfers!!!!!

I trust you mean except for the one up on the lava. ;-)

855.3Gumble on Golf?DUGGAN::DIAZOctavio @GSBMon Jan 29 1990 16:5212
    I wonder what made NBC think that Briant Gumble can be a golf
    commentator? He did a terrible job at the Seniors Skins and at last
    week's (or was it two weeks ago?) tournament.

    I got the feeling that the other guys were embarrassed every time he
    said something and also that he cut many times in their commentaries.

    Maybe it was that he played the PRO-AM and being highly payed the
    network decided to make him work, but I hope he stays at the Today
    show, he does a great job there.

    interesting comment by .1

    I was watching a pay for view event last year that had Norman/Woosman
    vs. Nicklaus/Trevino and on one tee Norman really boomed one and
    when Jack came up to hit next there were all sorts of digs by Norman
    when Nicklaus made the comment that "in my prime I'd have beaten
    that drive with my 3 wood but my back isn't that strong anymore"

    A lot of us do not realize HOW GOOD Nicklaus really was in his
    prime.

    Bob Jones onced remarked, after seeing Nicklaus in a tourney(Nicklaus
    was only about 23), that Nicklaus plays a game with which I'm not
    familiar. When the first tour stats came out in 1980 people then
    could see how strong Nicklaus really was. Out of all the top drivers
    (read 266-273yds) only Nicklaus was in the top in percentage of
    fairways hit. He was also tops in percentage of GIR's.

    This means he could hit the ball up to 270yds and still keep it
    in the same area code, extremely difficult to do by he still (at
    50) can do the same thing 75-80% of the time...

    No wounder he was voted the "Player of the Century...)
855.5Lee TrevinoWALTA::LENEHANTue Jan 30 1990 13:2310

    After watching the Senior Skins I felt a great admiration for Lee
    Trevino. Here they are playing for MEGA bucks, Lee notices Arnie
    needs a new grip to improve his putting game... gives him a tip
    which dramatically improved Arnie's putting. Arnold then proceeds
    to win $240,000 !!

    	Lee Trevino is quite a man.

    Walt, I too was impressed with Lee giving Arnie the tip on putting.
    It's that kind of stuff that keeps the game special.

    The guys are a joy to watch.

855.7"RABBIT EARS"WJOUSM::GLASSTue Jan 30 1990 15:0710
    On the same light as Lee giving the tip to Arnie is the old story about
    "RABBIT EARS".
    "RABBIT EARS" was the name that the old time pros assigned to Sam Snead
    in the pre-WWII years. Seems as if he listened to all tips and all
    conversations as a means to try to win. Of course, once this fact
    became known, he was "given" alot of tips and advice.
    Many of the pros of those days say that Sam would have won twice as
    many tournaments if he hadn't "listened" so well!
    Obviously, many would not think the same of Lee or wonder at all why
    Arnie would turn-down a putting tip from ANYONE.
855.8SA1794::TENEROWICZTTue Jan 30 1990 16:0717
    If I hadn't watch a golf program early last week I too would have
    thought Lee did a "great" thing. On the contrary I now think that
    what Lee did happens often on the tour. Case in point was a special
    on Kite. He was having a problem hitting a shot from the sand. So
    he walks over to Norman in the sand and says, Address the ball and
    then step back so I can stand in your footsteps. Norman adresses
    and then steps back. Kite steps in and says, Ya you do keep the
    ball furthe forward then I do. I have an idea that clicks of players
    stand together and help each other out when they see something
    going wrong.

    What I admire about Lee and Garry Player are their professional
    attitudes with all that money on the line. It takes a big person
    to take that lack of success when all you know is "Success".

855.9"Thanks, amigo!"HKFINN::F_MCGOWANZoot who?Tue Jan 30 1990 22:0017
    The money certainly can't be disregarded (even multi-millionaires
    don't sneer a putts worth $240,000): but at the heart of it was
    the pure enjoyment of the competition, of beating an old golfing
    nemesis (no matter how friendly you might be with him off the course).
    I had the impression that making that 240K birdie on nationwide
    TV would have been worth almost as much to Palmer at half the price,
    for the satisfaction of achieving some small measure of revenge
    for all the times Nicklaus has beaten him over the years! Palmer-
    Nicklaus is in the same exalted category of rivalry as Celtics-
    Lakers, Yankees-Red Sox, or Bruins-Canadians (guess which part of
    the country I come from).

    And Arnie should have split his earnings with Trevino, in payment
    for the putting tip. If it lasts into the Senior season, things
    could be *very* interesting!
