852.0. "TOURNEY DIRECTOR NEEDS HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!" by BOGUSS::COOPER (MAD HACKER) Tue Jan 23 1990 15:01

    I have just agreed to take over as Tournament Director
    for the Digital Golf League here in Santa Clara. We
    play a tournament every month somewhere in the area
    usually with 3 or 4 flights depending on number of
    entries. This is a new experience for me and if anyone
    in the notes file has some insight to share about being
    in this position I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

852.1What Type of HELP?ENOVAX::MOOREThu Jan 25 1990 20:4025
	Not sure what your position is but if you are to run a
	tournament each month my advise is "variety is the spice
	of life". What I mean is keep the interest up by holding
	different types of events.

	In our league we have had:

	Member - Guest: where each member can bring a guest (a
	non-league member) and compete in a variety of formats.

	Three Club Tourney: where each participant must determine
	which three clubs they wish to use (plus a putter) and
	only bring them on the course.

	Blind draw - where teams are made up from random choice.

	Each can have a variety of winners (prizes) i.e. Low Net
	Individual, Low Gross Ind., Low Net Team, Low Gross Team,
	Fewest Putts, Straightest drives, etc.

	Not sure of what you are looking for but hope this helps!

    Rich,
      Thanks for your input! We play a stroke play tournament
    with low net, low gross, long drive(men&women), A, B, C,
    and Calloway flights. I guess that I pick the courses
    that we play at and what format the tournament will be
    played under. A committee has been formed to assist me
    so we will be looking at some other things like the 3-club
    event, maybe a scramble, some kinds of team events, things
    like that. The league has played a couple of scrambles but
    there was a lot of grumbling over how the teams were picked.
    I guess there will always be complainers no matter what so
    I'll just have to get used to it.

852.3A pointer to some helpPNO::LATHAMMon Jan 29 1990 11:3120
    	I was the treasurer of the DEC-Phoenix golf league until its'
    	unfortunate demise last year. I worked closely with Jim Weddle
    	who was the tournament director (his chosen title) and he
    	might offer some good advice and assistance in helping you.
    	His mail address is PNO::WEDDLE.
    	My own views on being an officer in the league:
    		A number of complainers who didn't want to help rectify
    		a situation with which they disagreed.

    		There were some who wanted the league but didn't care
    		to help run the league.

    		A lot of work but not too much appreciation for the
    		treasurer, tournament director and handicap chairman.

    	Our league was a lot of fun for me but the hassle became a little
    	too much.

852.4What we do in CALABC::MCCLUSKYThu Mar 08 1990 20:3018
    This may be a little late, and I am not certain what you want. But, I
    have some ideas from past experiences. We used to travel once per
    month to a different course and tried to vary the format also. One
    month we had a scramble, next a best-ball, scotch two-somes, two-club
    tournament, play the course in reverse(green to tee, hole out by
    hitting one of the tee markers), we played a four-ball format, had a
    week-end where we played 36 holes each day in match play, medal play
    etc. Selections of partners was usually done by tournament committee
    with rules such as only one 10 and under on a four-man team, then the
    rest of the team is totalled so that the handicap total is as close as
    possible for all teams entered and then we had them where we used
    similar rules, but let the members select their own partners. Once
    each year we had a fun day - used to rent a private nine hole(36par
    37.5 rating) we excellent barbeque facilities and had the entire family
    join for swimming, tennis, golf, dinner and the annual awards. The
    theme for the play that day was, beer carts and fun. Hope these are
    the type of ideas you wanted.

    BIG MAC
          Sounds like you might have a larger club than we have !! We
    usually have 30-50 golfers per event. I may be ignorant but what
    is a scotch two-some ?? Thanks for all the info, it is already
    getting pretty interesting with all the demands that the members
    put on me. Renting a 9-hole for the day and having a family outing
    sure sounds like fun too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Male and female twosome. Both hit from the tee and select the shot
    then play alternating through putting out. Lots of variations, but the
    main thing is male - female. It is not Glenlivit.
