850.0. "tips on winter golf" by AKOV11::FEENEY (RAMROD) Mon Jan 22 1990 17:14

I find winter golf challenging and fun. Although different from
the summer it still requires the same fundamental sound swing, chip and
putting strokes. Winter golf has some decided advantages including
cheaper greens fees and no waiting. But to make winter golf comfortable
and enjoyable you need some tips. Here are mine. What are yours?
Don't feel left out because I'm glad it is not for everyone.

    Clothing:

    silk long johns
Inner sock lining with wool socks
regular pants and long sleeve shirt
    sweater vest
    Wind breaker
Tube mask (this is a tube that fits snugly on the neck and can be
raised to also cover chin, nose and ears) only need it if
               the wind picks up.
    wool stocking type hat
    Rubber golf shoes with spikes.
Winter golf gloves and if your a sissy a pocket warmer or two

Put the clothes on when both you and them are warm. Don't go to the
trunk of the car to get dressed as in the summer. I suggest silk etc..
so you do not roast when your in the club house having a cup of coffee.
I have seen people dressed in thermal hunting underwear who suffer from
    too much heat.

    Rules:

You have to be fexible as some greens are iced over. As long as there
is a hole or a pin than the opponents call it as to whether the ball
would have gone in if the hole was normal. If the icing is too bad then
the fewest strokes without going on the green wins with the winner
being the closet to the green.

    Weather:

10 degree is fine but you don't want much wind.

    Playing conditions:

If the ground is frozen than you need to have the ball land before the
green. I find that the yard markers are still good because you lose
distance due to the cold temperature but gain it back with a big
bounce. But you still have to meet the local situation as the sun and
    shade make make clubing interesting.

I don't know about this. I love to golf and have been seen on the
course on the coldest of winter days but those days are over. I just
can't get into it when the ball bounces down the fairway like a supper
ball or hits a green a bounces fifty feet in the air and thirty yards
over. BUt if you enjoy it my friend go for it. There was a time I would
be out there but no more. Maybe I'm getting old or something or maybe
your out of your mind. Whatever. Hit one for me and play a low
compression ball like 80 compression for best results.

I will still go out and practice when it's around 40 but that's about
    it for me.

Ah, winter golf, my favorite time to play, no crowds, cheep green's
fees, and great cold brisk weather. I always have to laugh at the skier
that thinks I'm crazy to play golf in the winter. I used to ski alot,
and I tell you it's cold, I'm never cold playing winter golf, you're
always moving, it's great vs. sking - ya, it's great to sit in a chair
lift for 20 minutes going up a mountain (where it's even colder) with
the wind howling at 30 mph.

    Anyways, my tips:

Play each hole back as far as you can, otherwise you'll be hitting
    pitching wedges into every green.

Don't play when the temp get's above 45 degrees, the top 1" of earth
thaws and get's way to soggy and also you have every wahoo and his
    brother on the course.

I always use half tees, and usually can get them into the grass.

Use frozen ponds to you advantage, you get a great true bounce off
    ponds.

Winter is a great time to play, as long as the wind doesn't blow too
hard and the ground is frozen. And, of course, as long as there's no
snow.

I played Saturday. Only about 20 fellow wackos out there. No waiting.
And it's a good thing I got out; we may not see the ground again
until April.

I have only two tips: Keep you balls warm (the ones with dimples); and
wear Damart-brand underclothes. I wore a Damart turtleneck and a
V-neck sweater, Damart socks (one layer), along with long underwear and
heavy slacks, and I was comfortably warm all day--and not too warm
once I went indoors. And I wasn't bound up with layers of clothing. Oh
yes, when the wind picked up a little, I put on a lightweight down
vest. It kept my trunk warm, but didn't constrict my arm movement. I
also always kept one golf ball as close to my non-golf variety as possible,
switching the chilled Maxfli for the warmed one after every hole. This
not only kept a fairly warm, compressible ball in play at all times,
it also kept me walking briskly!

But I don't recommend taking up the game in winter. I don't want to
spoil it for those of us who don't need any encouragement.

I forgot to mention my tips on balls. Topflite is the only ball which
will not crack when cold. Although I abhor using them in normal playing
conditions I use them in winter golf because they do not crack and I
get the same yardage with a cold ball and a big bounce as I do with a
warm ball and a normal bounce.

Also, I use a makeshift set of clubs so as to not worry about hitting
hard ground and I'm a firm believer that a good golf shot is the result
of a good swing and marginally related to equipment. I realize a snuck
in a little input on a previous controversial subject.
    on a previous controversy.
850.5A Good Way to Tee Up Your Ball in WinterCXCAD::ARSENEAUTim ArseneauWed Jan 24 1990 14:469
Tired of having to bring a hammer to the course in the winter just so you
can get a tee into the frozen ground. Well here's something that I do to get
around this. Go to your nearest hardware store and find some of the foam
hot water pipe insulation tubing (the stuff for 1/2" pipe works the best)
and cut little donuts off of it. Then tee up your golfball on top of a
donut. I don't know where I read about this but it works great.

    Re:              <<< Note 850.5 by CXCAD::ARSENEAU "Tim Arseneau" >>>

I also advantage of the mild weather last week and played on a 55-60
degree weather. As was very wet, but some areas were frozen, so you
never knew if it was going to plug deep or bounce like crazy.

What made me enter this reply is that still you could only get the
tee about 1/2 an inch in the ground in most tees. At the 9th south
at Stow, I saw a man putting in the ground something tied with a
string to a red circle. What he was using was a suction cup, those
used to hang something on a flat smooth surface like glass, and the
string was attached to a red can lid to prevent the cup to fly to
far. He said it worked beautifully, and he was not frustrated
anymore trying to tee up his ball.

Tips on winter golf for the New England golf fanatic.....

1: Collect all your winter clothes, get them out and lay them out on
    the bed.

2: Get your clubs out and put them in the car.

3: Pack a suitcase with your best golfin' clothes and then...

4: Call your travel agent and book a flight to your favorite warm spot.
Be sure to take all necessary equipment, golf clubs should do it.
Enjoy not only the golf, but the fact that we are all back here in New
England freezing our little patooties off.

USAir...If you can't afford a real airline don't go. After do you really want
your clubs to go to Pittsburg while you go to Myrtle Beach.

Oh well only two more weeks til I'm winging my way to a little Hawaiian golf.
(I can't wait for the weather to get lousy.)

OK, I give up - too many snow storms. I'll take the tip and I'm heading
to Florida Saturday for a week. I'm not taking my winter clothes and
plan to play every day rain or shine. I'll play Orange Lake, Black Diamond
and the course the seniors play in Melbourne. I'll also do my part
    sightseeing with the family.

I did play on the cape last Saturday on green grass- Great fun.

I would like another week vacation down south in March if anyone is
arranging one and needs another enthusiats - let me know AKOV11::feeney

Fraid there is nothing open in Mass. Possibly Sunday some courses on
the Cape will be open depending on Saturday night weather. Be sure and
call first. Here are a couple of numbers Poquoy Brook 508 947 5261 exit

Last week-end I played at the Kernville Country Club in Kerville, CA.
This week-end I will play Los Amigos Country Club, in Downey, CA. If
you try either, be certain to wear shorts, it is getting warm. Does
    that help?
                           Its why I love CA,
