837.0. "WILSON ULTRA clubs???" by CLEVER::ROBERTSON () Fri Dec 29 1989 13:07

    Have you seen the adds for the new Wilson Ultras clubs?? Some guy
    in an airplane blabbing about how great his game was....

        They're based on the fact that you swing at a 45 degree angle and
    not a 90 degree angle, which is the principal most clubs are
    supposively designed around. ???

    Anyway, does anyone know anything about these clubs??

    Thanks.

      I guess I don't understand that I swing at 45 degrees , and not
    90 , and that these clubs adjust for that?
         Are you (some guy) talking about upright rather than flat
    swing?? 90 is complete upright and 45 flat ala Ray Floyd.??
         Was there anything to drink during this conversation?
          The average would then be 67.50??
                               Happy New year,Angelo

    wilson introduced the 45 degree concept about three years ago.....

    there is nothing really new with this...only a new set of clubs
    that use the same principle....

    The 45% principal has to due with how the club rotates when you hit the
    ball off-center. Peripheral weighted clubs are weighted all the way
    around the circumference of the club based on the concept that on an
    off-centered hit the club face is going to rotate (twist) around an
    axis which is 90 degrees to the ground. Wilson claims that the
    clubface is going to rotate (twist) around an axis which is parallel to
    the shaft of the club which at impact should be ROUGHLY 45 degrees to
    the ground. Therefore, they place the majority of the weight in the
    upper toe and lower heel. A very crude diagram follows:

                               _
                              //
    			     //
                            //
                           //
                          //
                         //
           |     /      //
           |    /      //
           |   /      //
     . . . | ./      //
     . W   | /    . //
     .     |/ <------.------ 45 degree axis assumed by Wilson
     .     |      W .        (W equal weight concentrations)
     ...../|........
         / |
        / | <- rotation axis assumed for most peripheral weighted clubs

    This weighting system supposedly compensates for the off-center hit,
    making the club more forgiving. They have done this with thgeir woods
    also and done extnesive testing with Iron Byrum. When offsetting the
    hit 1/2 inch toward the toe and then 1/2 inch toward the heel, they
    compared the Ultra actual landing spots to about six other clubs, all
    name brand. I have a video tape of the actual testing. The Ultra did
    land closer to the spot where a perfectly hit shot would land than any
    of the other clubs usually only 3-5 yards off target.

    Keep in mind that this was all advertising hype, and it did'nt appear
    that the improvement was as dramatic when they tested the irons. I
    must admit that I agree with eth concept in theory.

    Incidentally, I am considering buying a set of these clubs. If I do I
    will give a complete review later. Set of irons, 3-PW runs $380 at my
    pro shop.

    Actually, I did decide to get a set (see earlier note) and I love
    them!! In January I was carrying a 25 handicap (we play all year here
    in South Carolina). My last handicap card, dated 6/21/90, gives me a
    17!!! A month after I bought these clubs I shot my all time personal
    best, a 78. Now, I'm not saying it's all in the clubs, but they have
    given me alot more confidence in my game. I had to get a flat lie for
    my set and chipping was the most difficult to get settled down after I
    realized that I needed one less club for almost every shot. I went
    from a 7 iron for 150 yds to an 8 iron. The first several rounds I
    played, I was overshooting every green.

    They ain't cheap, but they were well worth it for me!!

     I'm in the market for a set of irons, and was considering the Wilson
     Ultra 45's. I've heard some good things about these irons, tried
     them (in a net), and added them to my short list (along with the Edge
     GS and Ping Eye 2.) I'm also cheap, and want to spend around $40 per
     club, so I've been mainly looking at used clubs.

     Edwin Watts advertises a set of '92 irons (2-PW) for $369, and I've
     seen a set of used '93 Ultras (3-SW + LW) for $400. Are there any
     significant changes between the '92s and the '93s? Any
     recommendations or warnings?

Bill,

I've been looking around myself for an iron set. I was in the
"Golf Club Factory" in Framingham (just west of Bennigan's) and think I saw a
replica set of Ping Eye 2's being custom made for about $200. They actually
have several sets which look to be about exact replicas of several brands for
about the same price. I can't remember if the Wilson's were there but it might
be. It appears to be a good deal *if* they are in fact the exact heads minus
the name. I have no idea how good the shaft quality is though. I think there
is also a sale of some sort at the Bayside Expo Center this week which might
be worth checking into.

best regards,
brad...
