Well, the Australian Open is just over, and Peter Senior is the man of the moment. He's only the 6th person to win both the PGA and the Open in the same year. He absolutely blitzed it in 17 under for the 72 holes, 10 stokes clear of Peter Fowler. Calcavechia (woops probably a bit of bad spelling there) missed a birdie putt on hte 18th and had to settle for 4th. What really won it for Senior was consistency, the number of dead straight drives, in wind that was at least 15mph most of the time, was just amazing. I'll have to check tomorrow's papers for accurate results, I was only watching the TV on and off during the afternoon, so I'm not sure who came elsewhere. Curtis Strange and Greg Norman finished back in the field a bit though. Senior was rated by an Australian golfing mag at about 10th back in the list of favourites. Calcavechia (there I go again), Strange and Norman were the highest. The greens were so fast I couldn't believe how far some really soft putts were travelling. I'll post a better list tomorrow unless someone beats me to it. Lindsay

Peter Senior (Aus) 271 66,66,69,70 $90,000 (Australian) (2c US) Peter Fowler (Aus) 278 68,70,71,69 $54,000 Brett Ogle (Aus) 279 66,71,73,69 $34,500 Mark Calcavecchia (US) 280 67,69,69,75 $24,900 Nick Faldo (UK) 281 68,67,74,72 $20,800 Jeff Woodland (Aus) 282 66,69,73,74 $19,100 Gordon Brand Jr (UK) 283 68,69,71,75 $16,000 Michael Harwood (Aus) 283 71,67,71,74 " Curtis Strange (US) 284 65,71,73,75 $11,833 Frank Nobilo (NZ yeah) 284 71,72,70,71 " Howard Clark (UK) 284 68,75,72,69 " That's how the first 11 finished, you can buy your own paper if you want to see where Greg Norman finished (alright, 290). According to this morning's paper, Senior hit every fairway, and missed just one green (I think that is probably for the final round), but he only had 2 bogeys over the 72 holes. Senior uses one of those funny long putters, maybe I should go out and get the head of my driver converted to a putter. I reckon I could put it to more use. For sure it wouldn't send the ball off at such a radical angle :-) Lindsay |
