816.0. "A Touring Rocket?" by DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN () Thu Nov 16 1989 16:00

The Isuzu Kapalua tournament was on the tube last week (rounds 2
& 3 on ESPN, 4 on NBC). During the second round (Thursday) the amateurs
played, usually deadly boring stuff...this time, however ESPN followed
the group that included Roger Clemens and Sid Fernandez. Now, I've
played a course in Framingham (Millwood) where Roger is said to
have played; and the local legend is that he drove the first green
(340-plus yards). Being a bit skeptical by nature, I was reluctant
to believe this. No more...on the 15th hole at Kapalua, they measured
his drive at 346 yards; on the next hole, uphill and into the wind,
he managed a mere 285! And, the guy can putt!! I think they said
he played to a 6 handicap. So, if his arm ever goes dead, I think
we can conjecture where he might wind up (btw, he was keeping the
ball in play most of the time, though he did pull his drive on 18,
but no worse than some of the pro's). Sid Fernandez, who's built
like a truck, swings with virtually no lower body action, and still
manages to get the ball out there (nowhere close to Clemens, but
still pretty respectable). I think he plays to a 14.

I agree with your comments , except I think they said Roger was
    a 12 and Sid 18??

Hmmmm. Wonder if there is any correlation between Roger's
increasing performance on the golf course and his decreasing
      performance on the pitching mound?

If you want to see athletes that can hit a golf ball a ton,
watch a hockey player (they all play). In my younger days
I got to play/caddie with a few, and they were impressive
      ball strikers.

Now let me see.... I play baseball all summer and between games I play
golf. In the winter I go to Texas and play golf. I am financially set
for life and as healthy as a horse........... I would be ashamed to
    carry a 6 handicap let alone a 12. I'm lucky if I get out twice a week
and take at least 4 months off in the winter and have a 6 handicap.
Don't get me going on professional atheletes. It is my not so humble
opinion they are grossly over payed for the talent they have. Half of
them have a halfway decent season and they want a million .2 next
season and if they get offered a million .1 they cry. The best
baseball, football, tennis players and golfers are not on the field. They
are doing other jobs. Some accountants, some firemen, doctors, sanitary
engineers. The ones you see on television are only the best playing
atheletes but the media has these guys thinking thier gods or
something. Some basketball players getting 1 mil. a year for 10
20 points a game. Think about it. Rich Gedman, oh my god.

      I agree on hockey players.
Played with Tom Barraso this summer.
On 15 North, Stow, drove a 3 iron through the fairway dog leg
    straight into the woods!
One of the strongest studs I ever saw!
He claims it's in the strong wrists that hockey players have from
firing that puck from the age of 5! He's also built like a middle
line backer ! Strong and athletic.
