802.0. "Novice clubs advice ?" by WARDER::SMITHCO (Live and Dangerous) Thu Oct 26 1989 12:41

    Hi,

I'd like a bit of advice on the type (rather than particular make)
of clubs to buy. FYI, I am a novice (suprise suprise). I have the
ubiquitous half-set purchased from a friend to get me going !! A
have been taking lessons, and am now talking to the pro about buying
myself a real (half-)set of clubs. So far we've only had a brief
talk about the clubs he'd recommend, but I'd like general opinions
    before I spend any dosh.

To the point : As for the irons, no mention of make, but he suggested
the sort that have a cut-out at the back of the head. As for woods,
he said to steer clear of metal woods at my level (!!). Instead
to learn the trade using an ABS-type 'wood'. He doesn't think he'll
sell many more persimmon woods !!

The cost of the clubs is about 15-18 pounds each. (Oh yes, by the
way, that is UK sterling, not US $, as I live in the UK). A decent
metal wood is nearer 40 quid.

Any thoughts gratefully received (also donations ;-) ;-) ;-)

I agree with his suggestion about the irons. Perimeter-weighted irons
are the only logical choice for just about anyone amateur golfer,
regardless of skill. Even many of the pros have switched to Pings and
the like because they are so forgiving of mishits. They have a bigger
sweet spot.

I don't understand why he's steering you away from metal woods, unless
it's to save you money until you really get serious about the game.
Metal woods are usually perimeter-weighted, too, and so more forgiving
than true woods. The advantage, in my opinion, isn't nearly as clear as
with the irons, but they certainly aren't HARDER to hit well.

Good luck and enjoy.

I assume you folks have discount-type golf shops in your neck of
the woods? If so, go to one and have the pro there check your swing
and advise you from there. Whatever type of clubs you get, you
will short-change yourself if you don't have the proper fit; that
is, lie angle, staff flex, swingweight, grip size, and so on.

In other words - get advice from a professional who will work with
    you personally.

I agree with the first answer perimeter weighted are ideal for a
novice and even the mid handicapped golfer. I have also seen top pro's
using these type of irons. As for the woods I am an advocate of the
    metal wood for these reasons.

    1. Very little maintenance.(longer lasting)
    2. Less spin imparted to the ball making for straighter shots.
    3. More distance.

The only thing I will add is try before you buy. I play with Petron
made to measure clubs which work out at approx 4-500 pounds for a full
set. The great thing about them is that you can buy them one at a time
    if you wish.

     I hope this helps,
