766.0. "Rules question: why can't umbrellas be used?" by CALLME::MR_TOPAZ () Tue Sep 19 1989 13:22

       It never rains on the golf course, but just the same...

       I've never understood the reasoning behind the rule that says "In
       making a stroke, a player shall not seek or accept...protection
       from the elements."

       You're allowed to have someone carry your clubs and bag, you're
       allowed to ride in a cart, and you're allowed to use an umbrella
       while walking or waiting -- so why aren't you allowed to have
       someone hold an umbrella over your head, especially while putting?

       (Semi-serious side question: does anyone know of a ruling that
       would allow or disallow the use of those silly-looking hats with
       built-in umbrellas on top?)

    Lets face it. There are a lot of silly stupid rules in golf.

766.2ANOTHER SILLY RULE!!!BOGUSS::COOPERMAD HACKERWed Sep 27 1989 21:576
    WHY IS IT OKAY TO FIX A BALL MARK IN YOUR LINE OF PLAY ON THE
    GREEN BUT IT IS ILLEGAL TO REPAIR A SPIKE MARK UNTIL AFTER
    YOU PUTT !!!! I THINK THE IDEA ABOUT THE LITTLE UMBRELLA HAT IS
    GREAT !

    My personal opinion...

    	When playing an opponant I don't need any obstruction or damage
    on the course or greens to help me defeat him. If here is a spike
    mark or a scuff mark or whatever, if asked I'll let anyone
    fix it.

    	As for the pros I think any of them who complain about a course
    or the course conditions they play on are ASSH*LES. I like the
    attitude I see from the older golfers. They scoff at today tour
    players who find fault with a course. The older players remember
    the when the courses were.
