760.0. "Teeing Area" by USEM::VOUTSELAS () Thu Sep 14 1989 16:01

Was playing with a group and someone teed up OUTSIDE the
markers. The ball itself was outside the markers by 8 ft
Not behind , but to the right.

I said if this was for cash, it's a penalty. He says
no way. We were both half right. In stroke play
it's a two stroke penalty. In match play the oppenent
can ask another ball be hit WITH NO PENALTY.

It's still hard to believe no penalty in match play.
    Any experiences/comments ?? thanks,Angelo

       re .0:

In match play, the penalty is more subtle. Suppose I'm playing
against someone and notice that he's teed the ball outside the
teeing area (it goes back 2 club lengths from the markers). I can
wait until he hits the tee shot -- if it's straight and long, I
can ask him to re-hit; if he duck hooks it into the woods, I say
       nothing.

Of course, I could be a good sport and mention something to
him before he addresses the ball.

    Mr. Topaz,
thanks, sounds about right, also if he has hit a good shot
and you mention the violation, and he hits another shot,
psycholigically it SHOULD be a worse shot.
(I thought it was loss of hole in match play, but that
is severe for a teeing error where basically, he gained no real
advantage on most teeing areas) Angelo

760.3"COURSE CARE is REAL CARING"USMFG::TGLASSFri Sep 15 1989 13:3610
    Hi,
760.1's response clearly denotes why medal is called a mind game
and medal is you against the courses par!
Tee boxes are defined also to protect the tee ground from excess
play damage, so that may be the "reasoning" used to explain the
ruling or allow your opponent to "stomach" the penalty.
For sure, teeing between markers and repairing green ball marks
is just good course etiquette, so a penalty may help both the
outcome of the match as well as the course condition.

    Hi,
On a similar theme, we played a foursome tie where our opponent
from the 2nd tee teed his ball the full 2 club lengths behind the
markers as he is allowed to do. He then took his swing, hit the
semi rough behind the tee on his downswing and duffed the ball.
He just managed to trickle the ball off the tee and it didn't reach
the markers. My partner then teed his ball between our opponents
ball and the markers so it was still them to play.
