735.0. "Myrtle Beach Package. Myrtle Beach Package." by LRENZO::WELCH () Mon Aug 28 1989 13:48

	I would like to spend 4 days and 3 nights at Myrtle Beach
	at the end of April. Being a new golfer and going with 3-7
	others who have never been there, we are looking for a package
	deal. At least for our first trip, we want to concentrate on
	golf and not finding accomodations, cars and so on... Any
	suggestions about your experiences or possible travel agencies
	that you have had success with, would be greatly appreciated.

	By the way, for those who have contibuted to notes 159 and 519,
	thanks.  Great information on courses.

I haven't been into the Myrtle Beach area in since I played down there in
college, but at that time the Breakers Hotel had the best package around;
greens fees, a long list of courses to choice from (only one round allowed
on some, second rounds cost you normal greens fees), two meals a day
(breakfast and dinner), and the hotel, all for some price that I don't
remember but could afford as a student.

Have fun.

    A very cost effective vacation and great golf can be had by calling
    1-800-992-9775(Island Green Holiday) and ask for John as well as
    use me as a reference.

    You'll love the area!

735.3Breakers gets you Longbay...MJOSWS::FAGLEYbeat the residentWed Aug 30 1989 14:008
    I stayed at the Breakers Patricia Towers in their most exclusive suite.
    I can't help you with price of "normal" rooms there. I can say they
    have a great list of courses to choose from. Don't miss the new
    Nicklaus Long Bay course!! The Breakers can get you on there. It's
    worth any price!!

    P.S. I personally don't think much of the Island Green courses in
    comparison to the other courses I played. Just one hack's opinion.
735.4Called Island Green.. LRENZO::WELCHWed Aug 30 1989 18:0310
Re. .2. Thanks Tom. I called John Richie at Island Green (his number is
	(1-800-476-8476) and got some good information on their package.
	 They don't provide quite the service that I am looking for, ie.
	 John would recommend an auto rental agency, but they won't
	 make the arrangements for you. I did get the feeling that he
	 was waiting for me to tell him exactly what I wanted and then we
	 could negociate the price. I'm truly a novice at this. Perhaps
	 working with a travel agency is the best bet.

735.5"SERVICE makes for CUSTOMER SATISFACTION"USMFG::TGLASSWed Aug 30 1989 20:0712
    Larry,
    You are most through and frank. I appreciate both attributes!

    John is truley not the best source of help, but I did think you
    would get better service than you seemed to get. We(owners) are
    trying to put in a better service since it is a very nice venue
    and the costs are great. The course is "average" but more than
    acceptable to me and I have played many more years than I would
    like to admit.

    Anyway, hope you get down there and enjoy.

735.7We have the package..!! LRENZO::WELCHMon Nov 06 1989 14:0353

	We have come up with the package that we were looking for so I thought
	I'd pass on some of the information about it.

	Our local travel agent got us a package arranged by Great Times Out
	at 1-800-458-3635, PO Box 948, State College, PA 16804.

	4 Nights/ 4 Days (4th night was extra)	$580 per person	(8 people)

	Included:

       		.Mid-size Avis rental per 4 people.
	       	.(2) Two bedroom/two bath full kitchen
		    condos at the Ocean Forest Villa Resort.
		.Air Fair via U.S. Air with change over in
		    Charlotte, NC.
		.Greens fees for each of the following reserved
		    tee time unless otherwise noted.

		  Day 1  Gator Hole
			 Possum Trot

		  Day 2  M. B National (west)
			 Burning Ridge

		  Day 3  Sand Piper Bay
			 The Pearl (+ $45)

		  Day 4  Pawleys Plantation ( + $5)

		 . Carts included at SOME courses (about 50%)

	What is not included:

		.Any meals. We decided to keep the cost down by omitting
		 the possible included meals. We figure that we can easily
		 make our own breakfast in the kitchen included in the condo.

		.Some of the cart fees.

		.Probably some other items that we haven't thought of because
		 we have never been to M.B.

	We are quite pleased with the arrangements. We decided to pay a
	nominal fee for an additional night so we can get there and get
	settled the day (3pm ish) and night before we start playing.

	I'll follow up in May with a trip report. Thanks to all for your
	suggestions.

735.8MB updates????WORDS::NISKALAFreezing my Filberts off!Tue Jan 02 1990 19:067
    	Has anyone played a new course in MB called Long Bay? I may
    be going down there with a gang at the beginning of March for 4
    days. The courses we will play are Heritage, Dunes, Pine Lakes,
    and Long Bay. As you can see we have 3 "top notch" layouts, and
    Long Bay is new. There is a surcharge for each of theses courses
    in the package. We'll be staying at the Caravelle. Any info will
    be greatly "depreciated".

    Longbay is a new Nicklaus designed course that is my favorite in
    the entire area. It plays EXTREMELY long and uses waste bunkers,
    grass swales, and sand protected greens to make it as difficult
    a course as you will ever play. The Dunes is very nice but Longbay
    is in a class by itself.

735.10Hope to break 90 at all 4 courses.. Yeah, right!WORDS::NISKALAFreezing my Filberts off!Tue Jan 09 1990 12:1710
    	All right, I'm going to MB for March 1-4. 12 in our group and
    we'll be staying at the Caravelle. Fly down on 2/28 and awaken the
    next morning with a 8:12 tee time at Heritage. Next day brings us
    to the Dunes at 8:02. Saturday 3/3 we have Long Bay at 10:00 and
    finish with the "grandaddy" Pine Lakes at 8:04 on Sunday. What can
    I expect for weather in the first week of march down there, I presume
    there will probably be short sleeve weather. Well it will feel like
    short sleeve weather anyways coming from NH. Can't wait, I'll have
    to work on the putting in the basement and hit one of the indoor
    ranges before then.
735.11MB hotel recomendations?SHARE::HURLEYTue Jan 09 1990 15:3614

    	I'm also planning a trip to MB for the first week of March. I
    got the MB Vacation Guide with some 75 or so pages of hotels and
    golf courses listed. I'm going with the wife, so the quality of
    the courses isn't as important as the quality of the accomodations.
    We would like to stay at a real nice place (either hotel or condo).
    Do any of you who have been down there have any recomendations? It's
    hard to tell from the guide book which are good and which aren't.

    Thanks.

    	I've stayed at the Palms before. It/they are twin 16 story condo
    units. There are indoor/outdoor pools and whirlpools. I found it
    as being the cheapest price when I went in late 87. There are 1,2,3
    bedroom units and right on the ocean. We had a 3 bedroom unit on
    the 14th floor. They are fully applianced including washer/dryer
    in the room we stayed in. Check them out, I would recommend them.

	RE: 10

    Anything from driving rain in 45 degrees to 75 degrees, mild breezes
    and sunshine. Myrtle beach is finicky in March. My crystal ball
    says 65 degrees overcast and very comfortable.

    Keep your fingers crossed.

    The Breakers Patricia Towers are wonderfull! Especially the suites on
    the top floors facing the ocean.

	Well worth the price....... Rick
735.14when push comes to shoveLRENZO::WELCHTue Mar 27 1990 16:4119
It's getting close to Myrtle Beach time and I have a couple of questions:

1) How about balls? Are they less expensive there than back here in New
	England? I'm wondering if I should purchase them prior to the trip.
	I asked my wife how many I should bring, she said one for each hole.
	A real vote of confidence.....

2) A friend who once visited MB said that the "rangers" try to move you through
	your game as fast as they can. I think he acually said they "pump you
	through like your on a conveyor belt". I hope not. I am relatively new
	to the game and very contious of slowing the people behind me down. If
	I'm having a real bad hole, I pick up. But you learn very quickly when
	your being jammed or the ranger is counting your strokes. Any advise
	for the speed at which I may be expected to play?

    Hi Larry,

    	I don't know about the golf balls... but I never noticed anyone
    pushing me or my partner at anytime we were there. We played during the
    week, and never felt hurried. Maybe it's a little more hectic on the
    weekend?

    	The golf outlet stores down there are no cheaper than up here.
    You may find some roadside stands that are selling a dozen balls
    for $4.95. I didn't dare venture to see what shape they were in though.
    	As for the rangers, I was down there 3 weeks ago and we were
    nevered bothered.	Have fun!!!!
735.17ready... shoot... aimGRANPA::RFAGLEYWed Mar 28 1990 14:2711
    Larry,

    Nobody pushed us when we were in M.B. last year. Believe me, with some
    of our scores we weren't fast! But as we all know, it's not necessary
    to play well to play fast. I know golfers shooting 100 that can do it
    in 3 hours! Be ready to hit when it's your turn, and don't be afraid
    to walk a little when it helps the speed of play... those are the keys.
    Have fun, relax, and don't worry about being pushed. Your not going to
    be the worst players on the course!

    Rick
