667.0. "Strange/Bizarre Rounds" by ESPN::BLAISDELL (Born under a bad sign) Thu Jun 29 1989 14:35

This topic is reserved to log your, shall we say, unusual rounds
of golf. Everyone must have at least one strange tale to tell.
You know, a round that you shoot 50 for nine with 8 pars, or you
chip in 4 times to save par, etc.

I had mine this morning before work. It's been a strange and
bizarre year for me so far, but the round of golf this morning
takes the cake. I've never had such a round with so many extremes.
As the King of Siam would say "It is a puzzlement".

Card is from the back nine of Trull Brook in Tewksbury.

     Par My Score

      4 5 bogey 3 putt from 25 feet
      3 3 par 1 putt from 12 feet
5 5 par Nothing extraordinary so far

Now it starts to get weird

      4 3 birdie 1 putt from 30 feet
4 6 double Takes 4 to get down from fringe
      3 5 double " " " " " " "
      4 3 birdie 1 putt from 4 feet
      5 4 birdie " " " " "
4 7 triple Some bad lies and unlucky breaks

+4 on the last six holes without a par or bogey????

friends to play. The course is short... but tight and
tricky. Local players learn the bounces which I admit
will lower your score dramatically. Par is only 33...

667.3An odd hole?!?RATTLE::TLAPOINTEThu Jun 29 1989 18:1911
This is a tale of just one hole not a round, that will come later.

A few years ago when still in school I was playing against a friend.
Everything was fine until the 15th hole. This is a par 4 that's
real short, less than 250 yards, but the green could be classed
as micro-sized and is surrounded by traps and is O.B to the right
of the green (about 10' off). Well this guy tees off, and dubs
it about 30 yards, bearly off the tee. I hit a perfect tee shot
and drive the green... he then procedes to hit a 5-wood.... which
takes a hop... right into the cup for an EAGLE. I two putt, get
a bird and still lost the hole!!
667.4I still chuckle about this roundRITA::HYDEMigratory Database WorkerThu Jun 29 1989 22:0026
This happened to me about 1970 in Grand Forks, ND. I think the course's
name was Lincoln. I still consider this my most fun round ever. I
still laugh when I think of it.

Hole Par	Score
10 4 3 Tee shot in the rough. 5 iron through a tree (barely
nicked a couple leaves), 6 inch putt. First time I
was under par for my running total.
11 4 4 I was still under par after 2 holes.
12 On 12 through 16, I was more like my normal self.
13 I really took a tour of the woods. I lost 3 or 4
14 balls, 2 of them on one hole, alone.
15
16
17 5 5 Tee shot and 2 3-woods down the middle. Shanked a 7
or 9 iron onto the left side of the green. My 5th
shot was a nine iron over a sand trap to the top of
the green and rolled out of sight. I went looking
for the ball and couldn't find it until I looked in
                   the hole.

My weird round started fairly normally - I was about level or one
over par after 9. That was pretty good, but not totally unheard
of for me. Then on 11, a par 5, I hit a goodish drive that got the
best out of the hill/dry ground so the green was reachable. I think
I hit 5/6 iron, thinned it and finished 6 feet right of the pin.
Holed the putt and I'm one under par gross after 11!!! now that
    was unusual.

Next hole, par 3. Hit a 7 iron and thinned it again!!! Result -
6 inches (or less) from the hole, birdie 2. Unbelievable, 2 under
after 12. Now I can't remember the exact scores I managed after
that but I finished at +8, and I parred 2 of the final 6.

I came off in two minds - +8 is a good score, but hell I dropped
    10 shots in 4 holes....
667.6Broke 40 at least....TRCA03::ROSSFri Jun 30 1989 13:3517
Three weeks ago at a course named MillCroft in Burlington, Ontario,
I had the strangest round of my life. I am a brutal 18 handicap.
I showed up at the course as a single and joined a threesome.
After six holes I was -1. I kept waiting for 'reality' to set in.
I bogied 7 and then tripled 8 and bogied 9 for a 39. It was my first
time breaking 40 for 9 holes. Needless to say I was a 'happy camper'.
On the 10th tee I kept telling myself to relax. My goal now was
to break 85. (back 9 is tougher)
Without going into alot of very painful detail, I hit every sand
trap on the back nine. I either hit them fat and remained in the
trap or sculled them into a trap on the other side of the green.
Frustration set in quickly causing the rest of my game to go to
pieces. I had 53 on the back 9 for 92.
    Life is a bitch!!

Most of my rounds are strange to the normal golfer , but I have
one particular hole to tell you about. At Westminster C.C. I golfed
with my uncle and I had never played there. If any one has golfed
there you'll what im talking about when i say the first 6-7 holes
are all parallel well the 4'th (i think?) was a par 4 and I hit
my mighty driver thru 1 fairway to the right and almost half into
another. Well needless to say I was still a long way away. I had
about 195-210yds across to fairways and the green was on a little
upslope. So I cranked it and it seemed to go in the right direction
but i lost it in the sun. Well i proceeded to meet my uncle in our
fairway and asked if he saw were my ball went, well he wasn't aware
that I had hit . So we wen't around the green for a few minutes
and we couldn't find it so i dropped another ball around the end
of the fairway and knocked it up and the 2 putted when my uncle
pulled my ball out guess what we found my first ball . An EAGLE
and i didn't realize it could of went in the cup . So never under
estimate yourself look in the hole.

Well on the Fourth of July, I played the weirdest round of golf
in my life. It started pretty normal, with a bogey on the first
hole, I then preceded to par 2,3,4 and 5. The sixth hole is a 150
yard par three, I hit a 9 iron and it landed a foot to the left
of the cup and spun dead right hitting the pin, the ball then droped
down and spun completely around the hole to sit a half inch away
from my first ace. I was the even after six. The seventh is a
tough long wooded par five, I quitely blew my brains out there
and got a 9. Well I figured I had blown another good round when
I also three putted the 8th from 12 feet for bogey. On the ninth
hole I hit a bad drive and then pushed my second shot on the par
four of to the right and was about 20 yards from the pin. I then
knocked a sandwedge in the cup for another bird and a 39 on the
front side. The back nine was more normal, I parred 10,11,12,13,
    14,16,17, with bogeys on 15 and 18 (missing a 4 foot putt) for a 77.
I have never before had a roller coaster ride like I did on front
    nine.

I played a pretty strange round on the 4th too. Only 9 holes
though, in which I shot a 41, with no pars. 7 bogeys and 2 birdies.
We played the back 9 at about 7:45 AM as we had no tee time, but
got there just before the 1st group on the front came around for
their 2nd nine. I really didn't hit the ball all to well, but only
    had 14 putts!!! I birdied the 12th, a 525 yard par 5 hitting a
driver, another driver from the fairway, leaving myself a 20 yard
sand wedge which I put about 5 feet from the stick. I obviously
made the putt. I also birdied the 16th, a 145 yard par 3, but with
the tees up, it couldn't have been more than 135 yards, and probably
closer to 130. I hit a PW to 3 feet from the stick. I also made
to bogey putts outside of 10 feet. One from about 13 feet, the
other from about 20 feet. I actually 3 putted 1 green!!!

I had a weird round this past weekend also. I played Point Bluff
in Plattsburg NY (3rd oldest course in the US). It's pretty long,
    with 5 par 5's (3 of them over 520 yds). Out of the 5 par 5's I
pared 3 of them, and boggeys for the other 2. The par 3's I did
terrible on. They also have 5 par 3's. I proceeded to get 7 on three
of the par 3's and 5's on the other 2. If you total up my score
for the par 5's and par 3's, I had a better score for the par 5's.
One of those par 5's was a 541 yds which I got a boggey on. I would
have had a birdie, if I haden't lost a ball. Usually the par 3's
is where you make up the strokes you lost on the par 5's.

I played 9 holes yesterday that can best be described as up and
down. Started off with a par on a par 4 by saving it with a good chip
to 5 feet and dropped the putt. Then on the second hole, a 440 yd
par 4, proceeded to hook my tee shot into the woods. A chip out and
a 3 wood left me with about 50 yds to go. Three shots later, I'm
finally on the green and with 2 putts, I walk away with an 8. The
third hole is a 159 yd par 3. On the green off the tee and I drop in
a 30 footer for a bird. Holes four and five are par 4 and 5. I go
through them in par, par. Mmmm, this is nice right ?
Well, the par 5 sixth is next. A slice off the tee into woods starts
it off. Duffed the chip and I am still in the woods. Chip back into the
fairway and hit a 3 wood to 50 - 60 yds from the green. A little wedge
and I am on. 2 putts for a double. A par 3 at 228 yds now faces me.
I proceed to skull my 4 iron from the tee into the water right in front
of the tee. 2 shots later and I get to the green. From 6 feet, I three
putt and walk away shaking my head. 7 on a par 3 !!!!!!! The eight is
a 369 yd par 4. Crush a drive that my partner and figured was
    260 - 275 yds !!!! Did I do that ???? A little wedge on and left a 15
foot putt on the lip. Par again. The last hole is a par 4. On in 2 and
again leave the birdie putt on the lip from 25 feet. A tap in and
    another par.
The card shows 1 birdie, 5 pars, 1 double bogie and 2 quadruple
bogies for a score of 45. Actually, it was my best round of what has
been a trying year. Then I began to think about it and realize that
three poor tee shots cost me my first sub 40 nine hole round. Maybe
    there's hope yet.

While playing college golf in 1976, we were playing the Black Course at
Bethpage CC which is somewhere on Long Island, don't remember the name of the
town, could have been Bethpage (?).

On the front side I was regulation par on every hole, did not miss a green and
two putted everyone. I didn't even have any real testers. Now I'm really
encouraged to go out and try to bring one of the toughest (Golf Digest)
courses in the US to its knees.

I start the backside by overclubing out-of-bounds, on the first hole for a
double bogey, dubbed a tee shot 50 yards on the next hole and wound up with
another double bogey on that hole, and proceeded to bogie or double bogey
every hole on the backside. The backside was full of shanks, slices, duck
hooks, 3-putts, and every other type of nightmarish shot known to man.

I mercifully have forgot what my actual score was, but due to the harassment
I took from the other guys on the team (particularly after several bold
predictions as to what I might shot for a final score) I will never forget the
round.

putts than I had other shots, 40 putts (four 3 putt greens
and NO 1 putt greens)... 40 putts and 39 other shots...!
It was both a round that I would like to forget about and

Last week must have been one of those weeks. On wednesday
I played our league and was actually thinking I was going to
break out of this year long slump I've been in. I've been makeing
good contact and hitting the ball well but just not scoring.
I played the first six holes at 23 strokes. One over par nad then
played the remaining three holes in 23. Two par fives with a par
four in the middle. Just bad luck and lost concentration I guess.

Just had to tell people about this....

Yesterday (7/16) I recorded the best round of my life. I shot 69
at Pine Oaks in Easton (Par 68). The round consisted of 13 pars,
3 bogeys and 2 birdies (one on 18 to break 70).

To put this round in perspective, I carry a 13 handicap, which
means I normally shoot around 80 on this course.

I am a 25 handicapper playing in my first club championship
in the C flight division for 21+ handicappers. I have yet to shoot
less than 100 this year. My average score is around 110. I came
in thursday with a 101, my lowest this year.

I play out of Westminster C.C. I started out with a triple bogey
7, followed by a double bogey 6. I feel right at home now. I then
proceed to bogey the next four hole. I feel pretty confident now.
I then par the next two. I have targeted myself to play bogey golf
and now I'm just +1 of that goal. I also am standing on the par
3 ninth lying 41. My previous low nine was thursday when I shot
a 49 back nine at Westminster. Well I scored a triple bogey 6 to
    go out at 47.

    	Now I'm psyched I drive the par 3 10th, and I'm 30 feet from
a birdie. I left the putt short by 18 inches. I missed from there.
GOD only knows how. The eleveth hole I drive 250 yds and I'm just
short of the 150 marker. I pull my seven iron left. I find myself
behind a tree with no sight of the green. I chip out lying 3, just
in front of the green 30 yds from the pin. The pin is cut in the
back left corner, I have to go over a trap, but have the whole green
to work with. Right in the trap. Three shots later I'm out of the
trap. Two shots later I'm on the green. Two putts later I'm safely
in with an 11 on the 11th.

Two 5's and five 7's later I'm in the club house with a 108.

prestigious Bungool cup stroke round. On 15 a 510 metre par 5 with a

down in front of the creek, still 180 out I hit five iron well I mean

In my league on Monday, I had a strange round for me. I am
normally eratic off the tees, hit my irons 5-W pretty well, and
am above average on and near the green. But Monday was a totally
different round for me. I hit 6 of 7 fairways off the tee and the
only one I missed was fairly long and in the rough only 1 yard off
the fairway. But somehow, my good play off the tee was offset by
poor iron play. (maybe because I'm used to hitting out of the rough
all the time!!! :-)) Anyway, I only hit 2 greens in regulation,
one being one of the par 3's, even with good tee shots. But, I
hit the pin 4 times from off the green, with one of them staying
in the hole for an Eagle 3!!! I ended up 3 over with only 13 putts
    for 9 holes.
