627.0. "League Mgmt Program Needed" by MUSKIE::HAAG () Fri May 26 1989 18:11

I am in the process of trying to set up a golf league here in Mpls. I was
wondering if anyone had a program (VMS-based please) that I could use to
compute score, hdcps, etc? We have not decided on the format of the league
so I don't know exactly what capabilities this program will have to
support.

However, this is going to be a "fun" league. Not real competitive and the
format isn't all that important. A good program to help with the paper
work could dictate the league format and I don't think anyone here
would care all the much.

I haven't written a program from scratch since 1977 and don't want to
start now. If I have to modify one it's no big deal. But I would like
one to get started.

Our golf league scorer has a program that computes scores, I don't
know if he reads golf notes or not, but he can be contacted on VAXmail
at HYDRA::HOPE, his name is Steve Hope and I'm sure he'll be glad
    to help get you started....

I have a golf system written in BASIC. It runs very nicely on a
MicroVAX. It takes some effort to install it and get it going but
works great! If you're interested give me a call.

I have a program that I wrote over the winter. Its written in pascal
I keeps track of team scores, and players handicaps where a handicaps
are figured from the best 3 of the last 4 adjusted scores. I will create
a history file of everyone in the league, and a standings file of
the teams in the league. (2 person teams). It also finds low net
for the week, and low gross for the week. The down side of the
program is that its not very fault tolerant to incorrectly entered data.

Send me mail if you want more info and I'll send more details

I wrote a bunch of programs for the CXO golf league. It's an entire
database program, multi-threaded and uses DECNET. The whole league is
run by it. People go out and play their matches at the assigned courses,
(we play at 7 different courses). They come into work, and run the scoring
program "KEEPER.EXE" which knows the scorecards for all the courses, (it's
easy to add more courses), and enter their scores, hole by hole. Then,
the software computes all the points, counts, eagles, birdies, pars, bogeys,
etc. And automatically updates the database with the match information,
This is all done via DECNET. At the end of the week, me (the secretary)
generates the standings report, and mails it out to the league. Match
confirmation is accomplished via email. When the matches are entered
a copy of what was entered is mailed out to the players (and/or subs)

Then, via the KEEPER.EXE program (all menu driven) you can get online
statistical information, call up old matches, show available subs, show
team information, player information, etc. So far, it's been working
fine. Anyone can access the program via DECNET, if your intersted in
seeing what it's like, try it, You can try an enter a match (PLEASE DON'T
ANSWER YES TO THE MATCH ENTER CONFIRMATION QUESTION!! YOU'LL REALLY ENTER
A MATCH!!.
All you have to do is:

	$ RUN HOT""::KEEPER

It may take awhile to load the courses from back east, but once
they're loaded it's all done locally except for a few DECNET
	queries.

Randy, I am also interested in this golf system and would like to
talk to you about it. My office does not have access to DTN so could
you give me a different number to reach you at?

627.7Mngt of a tournement ?BRS01::MAGIELSBart at the heart of Europ...Thu Jul 27 1989 07:1117
    Randy,

I'm a novice on golf, but...we are looking in Belgium for a system
which can cope with the management of a weekend golf tournement.
If you can tell us your (or even another existing) package could
help us, we would be happy to talk about it very soon !!

Another issue is I don't know anything on golf and I suppose you
need some golf knowledge to be able to use the system ....?!! or
is it so excellently documented everyone can use it easily ?
(for example : can press people use terminals to trace the tournement
going from menu to menu, asking 'a to z' ?)

    Thanks for your help,

I don't think my system is what your looking for. The one I
have keeps track of weekly team matches. It calculates handicaps
and prints various reports such as weekly standings. It sounds
like you want something similar to what they would use in pro
tournements, keeps a leader board and such.
I would suggest contacting someone from the Digital Seniors Classic
committee, there is a topic in this notes file somewhere.
