604.0. "RE-gripping Iron's" by MPGS::POND () Wed May 10 1989 08:10

I would like to re-grip my Iron's. Can I do this myself without a Rocket
scientist there with micrometer and weird apoxys?

Also where do you buy the grips, pro-shops? How much??

Thank/Neal

    Regripping isn't hard to do. Some pro shops do carry grips and also
    the double sided tape that is needed. Price - $1 - $3 each... You
    also need a solvent for the tape (some people use lighter fluid).

    If you want more info Neal, just send me some mail...

     Gene's right, but it's simpler and cheaper to go to any Nevada
    Bob's (assuming you just want normal size "Victory" type rubber
    grips. They charge .99 each, and even though I did my own repair
    work for years, that's cheaper than I could do it. Hell, the grips
    COST .95, and that doesn't include masking tape, "miracle tape,
    solvent or postage...

    Re: .2
       They really charge only 99 cents per grip for "victory" rubber
    grips?!?!? God, that a great price!! Do you know if they also have
    other reasonable prices for the "victory cord grips"??

604.4Victory Crowns at $2.50DARTS::DIAZCMG/CDG/SAMGWed May 10 1989 15:0917
    Re:< Note 604.3 by RATTLE::TLAPOINTE >

    I just regripped all my clubs with Victory Crown grips. I bought
    them at New England Golf Supply for $2.50 ea. They also have the
    two sided masking tape. They didn't recommend lighter fluid, but
    thinner as solvent.

    This was my first try at that and I found it easy to do, the only
    thing is to make sure you align it properly. Also I streched too
    much the rubber in the first one that I installed, and I can feel the
    difference in thickness with the other clubs.

    I enjoy doing things myself, and the fact that I had all clubs done
    in about 3 hours, instead of driving 45 minutes to Nevada and leaving
    my clubs there for several days, made me do it.

       If I lived or worked in the So. N.H. area, I'd take the easy way
       out by bringing the sticks to Mr Kelley (see .1). I've seen the
       work he's done for three different people, and it's first-rate.

       I wouldn't go to him if (hah!) I needed lots of help with my
       swing, though, or especially my putting.

604.6A second on the recommendation of the ModeratorSDEVAX::GRYGLIKWhen's our tee time?Wed May 10 1989 15:579
    I second .5 on Gene's first-rate work. He made an outstanding set
    of custom clubs for my father. My father is 73 yrs old and improved
    his game by an average of strokes per round! He attributes the
    improvement to the new custom clubs because we found he uses clubs
    that are very similar to Ladies' clubs in shaft length (shorter)
    and swing-weight (very light).

    I'd like to know where I can get green Victories for $.95 each. I pay
    more than that is quantity.

    I'd certainly agree that Gene's club work is first rate. I'd also
    agree that his swing needs something (speed control might help) but
    I've had the SOB run in back to back no brainers for the beer. I'd
    rather be lucky than good anyday!

604.9not "real" victories...CSCMA::TURNQUISTGreg TurnquistWed May 10 1989 19:357
    I checked into this a while back, Nevada Bob's doesn't use the real
    Golf Pride Victory gips that go for $2.50 apeice, they use "Victory
    style" grips that you can get in catalogs for about a buck apiece.

    I use the 99 cent grips and I like them, but I may try out the "real"
    Victory grips this year just to see if they are any different.

604.10Fat vs. SkinnyDNEAST::FREEMAN_KEVIThe Squeeky Wheel = NeglectFri May 12 1989 20:268
    Just a novice here. How often do you folks replace your grips?
    Once a season, every other year etc. Also any advice on various
    thickness/sizes. Ie fat vs. skinny grips. and what are the benny's
    if any or is it personal preferences. Got all new equips. this
    year so I'm afraid I'll be all out of excusses this season 8^).

    Hacker Freebie, see ya at the Corp. Tourney. What with all this
    rain this week we'll be needen those bags of sand even more! 8^)

    re. 604.10
    I like to replace my grips every other year. Every couple of weeks
    though I scrub the grips that are on my clubs with soapy water.
    They stay pretty tacky that way. I like to use the standard green
    Victory grip with rib. I,m experimenting with a non-ribbed grip
    on my sand wedge as it makes it easier to open the blade for those
    high lobs we all love to hit!! As for grip size, I prefer a grip
    that is slightly over-sized (diameter of.850 under the left hand)
    It seems to have helped me cure a really bad hook as I am no longer
    rolling my wrists over quite so fast. Also, I quit "milking" the
    grip with my right hand at the top of my backswing. Have
    the pro at your course take a look at your grip, that is the best
    way to find out for sure.

    	RE: .10

    	Kevin,

    	The amount of life you get out of your grips depends on three
    	primary things:

    	1. the amount of golf you play...

    	2. the amount of care you put into them as stated in .11

    	3. how hard you squeeze the bugger...!

    	As for grip size, it isn't so much the advantages that you
    	can get, but the disadvantages you get for grips that are
    	not the right size for you... To tell if your grips are the
    	right size... hold the club in your left hand the way you
    	would normally grip the club, then hole the club straight up
    	(just with your left hand), check to see where your finger
    	tips are in relation to the palm of your hand. Your finger
    	tips should not dig into your palm nor should there be a
    	gap of more than 1/8 of an inch...

    	RE: .11

    	Cooper (sorry don't know your first name),

    	When you say your grip size is .850 under your left hand, by
    	what means are you measuring it? To the best of my knowledge,
    	a men's standard grip is .900 and a ladies standard is .850...

604.13grips can affect your shots...WILKIE::GORDONMon May 15 1989 13:4314
    re: .11

    	Gene can verify this but I beleive that if you have hook tendicies
    you can "help" it with larger grips. If you have slice tendicies
    you can "help" it with smaller grips...

    	When I first started playing I sliced all over...changed to
    thinner grips and it helped my hand action through the ball and
    helped me draw more. recently need to change a grip on my driver
    and didn't have what I normally use so threw on what I had which
    was on of those oversize grips and started fading my driver all
    over the place...it's hell when you set up to draw(aim right) then
    end up with a fade cause you might as well just slice it...I quickly
    got the correct(for me) grip installed...
604.14THAT'S LEFT RIGHT?BOGUSS::COOPERTue May 16 1989 15:518
re: .12

    Gene,
      If I knew my right hand from my left I probably wouldn,t miss
    so many putts !!! My grips are built up to .850 under my RIGHT
    hand. Sorry for the confusion.

    Neal

    I just regrip my Iron's and I was reluctant as you are, I'm not
    exactly a Rocket Scientist either, anyways I bought grips, they
    come in sets of four, (one set cost me $12.00) and each set comes
    with directions, enough sticky paper and glue (whatever it is) for
    the four clubs. Each club took me approximately a minute and a
    half, and if I say so my self, they look very professional....

    Piece-of-cake, real easy to do....and ny clubs look and fell like
    new, I plan to do them every year from now on....

    The price of grips vary from $11.00 for a set of four, to as much
    as $18.00 a piece, you can get a good deal at Navada Bob's or any
    Golf store and of course as a last resort a pro-shop for a few bucks
    more.

    But believe me it's easy to do, and your clubs will feel so much
    better and more controlable with new grips....

    Regards,
      IV

604.16I use Mail Order House for gripsMPGS::GOGUENTue May 30 1989 22:437
    I usually mail order my grips every year and if I remember correctly I
    only paid around $2.00/grip entire set of grips (13 + putter) for
    around $30.00. I can check on the price if your interested. By the way
    I order the Jumbo Victory Grips (I got big hands).
