557.0. "New club advice???" by BETTER::ROBERTSON () Mon Mar 20 1989 14:17

    I'm looking for a new set of clubs. Something more forgiving than
    my old Browning 500's. I tried some DUNLOP PWS's and they felt good.
    I think I'm leaning towards metal woods.

    I might even consider second hand.

    Should I get custom fitted clubs like Wilson 1200 GE's??????

    I don't know where to start.....

    Thanks.

    I played with 1200's for about 4 years. They are a very forgiving
    club. A club that should probably be used by players at about an
    18 handicap or above. One someone gets below an 18, they ususlly
    require a club with a little more "feel". A good club for that
    is something like the new Taylor made preffered irons.

    For single digit handicappers, the Wilson staff or the Nicklaus
    Murefield are good.

    One last thing, I won a set of YAMAHA BORON woods in a raffle.
    Those clubs took about 4 strokes off my game. I hit the ball
    straighter and about 15% longer. It's a lot of money to pay for
    woods (about $120 each), but if you have some extra cash to burn,
    they're not a bad investment. Finally, you can buy a golf game!

    	I guess that doesn't say much for the Pings, Hogans, Tommy Armours,
    	etc.. that the pros play. Pings and Tommy Armours also are in
    	same catagory as the 1200s...!

    	Just some food for thought...

    those swings are available at your friendly local robotics shop,
    they take about two weeks to fit properly, but then you are playing
    perfect shots every time... sounds great doesn't it

    but how boring....

    re.  new clubs...

      There are many good clubs out there, find a couple of good sets that
    feel good and then get the best deal you can. I know that a set of ping
    irons cost around $415 (3-pw) at Charmingfare Links (cheapest I have
    found), that's expensive in my book, but they are very good clubs and
    can take a beating

    Reply to the K-Mart comment. Is that a wise crack???
557.8Work on swing instead...BETTER::ROBERTSONThu May 11 1989 18:208

    I swung lots of clubs then tried my Brownings. They're pretty good
    afterall. I think I'll stick to the Brownings and work on my swing.
    When I can consistently shoot under 45, I'll consider new clubs
    again, unless someone gives me a great deal on something else.

    Thanks for the advice...

557.9Cavity-backed vs. Heel-toe?5WOOD::FITZPATRICKToday my jurisdiction ends here.Tue Jun 05 1990 12:4610
    My brother wants to get a new set of clubs for his wife. He called me
    asking what the difference is between cavity-backed and heel-toe-weighted
    clubs. I wasn't exactly sure, so I suggested that they go to some
    store where she could hit a few and take which one feels better, which
    they're going to do. But I would like to know what the "official"
    difference is.

    Thanks,

557.10My thoughts...MSEE::KELLEYCustom club fitting/club repairsWed Jun 06 1990 16:5418

    Tom,

    Some people use the two terms interchangeably. My thoughts are that
    cavity-backed (perimeter weighted) are the Ping type clubs. Heel-toe
    weighted clubs can be cavity back or not, but have actual weight ports
    in the heel and the toe areas, Tommy Armour 845's would also be
    classified as a heel-toe iron, their irons tansfer more weight to the
    toe area on the longer irons, which is where most players tend to make
    contact with the ball with long irons. IMHO, the best irons
    (particularly if you are looking to improve your game) are cavity back
    with heel and toe weight ports (with these weight ports you can set
    them up to what works best for YOU)... Oh ya, and custom made of course
    ;-) in fact I don't know if any of the major manufacturers offer
    anything like this...
