553.0. "TPC PICKS" by MAMTS1::KVENEZIO () Thu Mar 16 1989 15:21

    How about some thoughts on the TPC. I know it has started by now
    but your picks are welcome anyway.

    I'll start with mine. I like Tom Kites chances. He's playing very
    well lately and has always played well at the TPC course.

	The smart money would call Sports Phone & then pick someone
	other than the leader. The probability of the first round leader
	winning the tournament is very small.

    I hope he's playing this week.

    I would have replied yesterday, but I was out on the links. I
    Must admit that I have seen the first round results too. I
    picked Lanny Wadkins in the Gold Digest sweeps, but I haven't
    seen ot heard ANYTHING of him in weeks (anybody know where he
    is?). So, I will go with my main man, Couples...!

    I vote for Curtis Strange

    I also saw before yesterday's results, and also read Golf Digest
    April issue which centers on the Masters. According to GD it's going
    to be Curtis year at Augusta. Nevertheless Seve is still at the top
    on the odds table. But that is another tourney, maybe we should
    already start a 1989 Masters note.

553.9Careful Curtis, we're listening...DELNI::M_CARBONEFri Mar 17 1989 16:319
    Anyone catch Curtis' remarks when he was having such a bad time
    with the bunker and trees on the 14th (I think) last night on USA?

    Went something like this " God D*mn Mother f**king course, I should
    f**king quit" Was quite audible on the tube and even heard Lee
    give a sigh in the tower. I guess even the big boys get frustrated
    now and again, and here I was thinking they weren't human!!

    Mike,

          I heard it. I couldn't believe it!!! He let off steam, but
    boy, did he gain his composure after that. He finished strong, and
    I wouldn't be surprised to see him win.

       Re:  Curtis's outburst

         Strange has quite a reputation for his verbal assaults and
       ahem...colorful language. He has calmed down in recent years
       (and not coincidentally, his game improved), so his recent
       tantrum is quite surprising.

    I couldn't watch the tourney on Saturday, and I didn't quite get what
    happened to McCumber (sp) on Saturday, was he trying to hole out or
    he moved the ball? What happened?

    I mean, even I don't miss 3" putts.

553.14The Gentleman's GameHOTDOG::CANEDOMon Mar 20 1989 14:1611
    Two thoughts on McCumber's one inch miss on Saturday:

    	- Next time you or someone else says "that's a gimme" think
    	  of Mark McCumber and putt it!

    	- Golf is a gentleman's game and it was classy of McCumber to
    	  take the stroke (and about a $12,500 pay cut) and then talk
    	  about it so candidly immediately after finishing the round.

    Bob C. (who's missed a few like that - and didn't count them all-
              but will from now on!)

    RE: .13,

    Tavo,

    It is unclear to me as to whether he was trying to hit it or not.
    I think he was trying to hit it, but I have not heard his thoughts
    on the matter. Did anybody hear McCumbers explanation...?

553.16It (should) Only Happen OnceIAMOK::OCONNORMon Mar 20 1989 15:578
    Mark went to tap it in and it looked as if he stubbed the putter
    on the ground as it made contact with the ball and as a result the
    ball moved 1/2 way to the hole.
    His explanation was that he went to tap it in and he was amazed
    that it did not go in.
    I did the same thing in a tournament a long time ago and lost about
    $ 50.00 worth of prizes. I have always made the effort to set up
    and stroke the short puts the same as the three footers, ever since then.
553.17A True SportsmanLESCOM::CLOSEMon Mar 20 1989 15:5910
    McCumber demonstrated the true sportsmanship of golf. He did move
    the ball, about 1/2 inch, and he called it on himself. In the replays
    it was clear that he had moved it, although when he called it on
    himself he didn't think he had moved it. Still, as he said, he made
    a move on the ball and "intended" to move it. If you swing, miss
    completely, and the ball doesn't move, you have still taken a stroke.
    An honest golfer calls this, as McCumber did to his credit.

    It's always bothered me that even the pros are so incredibly cavalier
    about this little tap-ins. Maybe now they won't be.

    I was there for the tournament and was following old Curtis around.
    That's not all he had to say.
