550.0. "Sky Meadow C.C. - Update?" by LDP::GORCZYCA () Mon Mar 13 1989 18:24

Anyone had any first hand experience at Sky Meadow C.C. in Nashua,
    N.H.?

Last mention I saw was back in note 124.

They seem to be offering memberships to the public this year and
a friend of mine was wondering if it's worth the $1500/single /
    $2000/family membership fees they want.

Any infor about general conditions, pros and cons, would be
appreciated ... even if its highly biased!

    Thanks,
    John

> Anyone had any first hand experience at Sky Meadow C.C. in Nashua,

It's a nice course in good condition. Keep the ball in the short grass
because they have real (read US Open) type rough! Also if you are wild
off the tee I wouldn't play there unless you are up for replacing
    sliding glass doors & windows.

> Last mention I saw was back in note 124.

They used to have only 10 holes open. Last year when I played the
other 8 were seeded. Are they going to be open?

The gotcha is that you have to take a cart & that cost is extra. That
combined with the fact that you have to keep your carts on the path turned
    me off.

Don't get me wrong. It's a nice course & I like it. However this year
I think I'll do better as a public links golfer. If you do join please
keep us abreast of what develops. I am interested in joining when they
    go private.

A few years ago ('86 I think), I was talking with one of the
real estate salespeople at Sky Meadow. She mentioned that they were
trying to get an L.P.G.A. tournament for '89 or '90. Has anyone
    heard any more about this?

    Re:< Note 550.0 by LDP::GORCZYCA >

Last thing I heard (late last year) was that they had gone under.
They didn't manage to sell enough real state.

Maybe they sold the whole development and the new management is
    trying to get some money.

I will recommend that you find out what is the real financial status
of Ski Meadow, before doing anything else.

As a course I played it only once but I think is beautiful. Very
well kept and some very interesting holes. I remember particularly a
down hill par 3, and I mean down hill, vertical drop has to be more
than 200 feet. I think I hit a 5 wood and didn't reach the green.

As mentioned before, it only had 10 holes finished. One of the
unfinished ones was an island par 3 which look very challenging.

As for the houses (which some of them are mansions), what I remember
is that only in the first one or two holes are really close, the rest
you have a little more room.

And yes, you spend a lot of time going from the cart paths to where
    your ball is.

    Hope this helps.

I play in the 80s so I'm a fairly reasonable golfer. The first time I
went they wouldn't let me on the course. I was dressed neatly. I was
wearing jeans you see. They were very snooty about it. It's a beautiful
course but all in all rather expensive and you have to project an
    Image. I haven't been back.

550.5Check FinancialsBIMINI::FOXWed Mar 15 1989 01:157
I have played the course a number of times and think it will be
a beautiful course when/if they finish it. The carts on the path
have a tendency to slow play down so if membership goes up this
could be a factor. Also I think the advice of checking on their
financial condition is a good idea or you could be paying for not
playing. Price has gone up another friend played there last year
    for $6OO.
550.6downhill par 3--piece of cake16BITS::ARMSTRONGWed Mar 15 1989 16:4311
I remember that par 3--my favorite hole! Hit a 2-iron off the tee,
hit somewhere down the hill and bounced all the way to the green!
(I need all the help I can get--I say more holes like that one.)

The carts were a pain, but if you hit a long ball it's not so bad.

The other thing worth mentioning in relation to the rough is that
they leave it rough all around the greens--you don't want to leave
anything just short of the green, unless your good in the rough.

550.7My feelings about membershipsSA1794::WELLSPEAKand he walked on down the hall...Thu Mar 16 1989 11:5918
I can't see paying that kind of money to play 36 holes of golf
a week. Especially, if you can only play approximately 30-33 weeks
a year. And of those, you can probably knock off 2 to 4 weeks for
inclement weather. When you divide those figures into rounds played,
you're paying a very high price per round, and you're still limited
    to only 1 course.
I like to play different courses, and only play about 36 holes
a week, so the price becomes outrageous!!! But I suppose, if you
play 5 or 6 times a week, and/or you have pool and tennis court
rights as well, and you have a family who will also use these
facilities, then it would be worth it. But for me, my wife would
probably divorce me, if I were to play 4 times a week. I currently
play 2 times a week, with a tournament on a weekend scheduled approx.
once a month. It's really tough to improve that way, but, until
my son gets old enough to golf with me, it will have to due.

I belonged to SKYMEADOW last year, and I sent in my money for this
    year.

The course is in great shape and its a great layout.

The latest information is that all 18 holes will be open this year.
They just hired a new pro and greens keeper. The course will open
    on April 15.

I've played many of the top courses in the area including Manchester,
Salem (MA), Ferncroft, and more...SKYMEADOW is right up there with
    the best of them.

One more bit of info that may be important...the latest prices are:
    	o single ----------- $2000 ($1500 if in before March 20)
    	o Husband/wife ------- $2500 ($2000 if in before March 20)
    	o Family ------------- $3000 ($2500 if in before March 20)

This year the course is under new management so many of its members
are concerned that there may be some changes from last year.

You have to trade off joining versus the weekend greens fees of
    $35.

Heard it just went belly up for the third time or is it the fourth.
Knew some guys who put up $75 to play in a tournament knowing the
back nine was now open. Come to find out with the financial problems
they are having, they are not going to open it. Imagine how that
must have set with the players all set to play a shot gun start
on 18 holes only to turn out to be 9. Guess this is the chance

Pro's - Excellent Golf Course, greens are like an elegant green
carpet. The fareways are beautifully cut, and are hour glass in
shape and style, not much fareway, lots and lots of rough, in the
rough the grass is thick and long, I lost three balls just off the
fareway, beautiful course, but I didn't like it, it's just to damn
difficult, also a couple of the greens have a magnificient views,
    you can see for miles....

Con's for some, Pro's for others---- you must be in golf dress,
no cut-offs, shirts must have a collar, must were golf shoes,
and golf carts must stay on paved areas. No alcohol on the course.

Golf Carts - Very often you find yourself bringing half the bag of
clubs with you, your cart is at times quite a distance from your ball.

    Once again, excellent course, on a 0-10 scale it's a 9.

Golf Carts - As you mentioned, there is nothing worse in my
mind, then paying top dollar for a golf course, then top dollar
for a golf cart, and having to bring half your bag with you every
time you leave the cart. If a course allows carts on the course,
then they should at the very least, allow you to cross the fairways,
at 90 degree angles. I'm not advocating riding carts down the
fairways, but just that if the cart path is on the left, and you
hit the ball way right, you're allowed to somehow get the cart to
the right side of the fairway. Otherwise, you might as well walk
the course. which is what I do 80% of the time.

I don't like courses where they require you to ride at. I walk all
the time. Last year I bought one of those bags with the stand built
in just for that purpose. The only time I can remember I preferred
to ride was playing Disney's course in 100 degree heat and 90%
humidity, and those nasty hazards they have down there on 4 legs
    and a long tail 8*).

It just so happens that we are playing Skymeadow this weekend....the
back nine is opened (finally) and the cost to play the 18 is $50.00
with the cart. The course is in great shape (I have a friend that
lives over there) from tee to green. Accordinging to my friend,
they are opening it up for memberships for outsiders, and I believe
the cost is around $2000.00 per year. Doesn't sound like much,
but when you stop and think, all there is there is a golf course....no
social amenities at all, just golf. Let you know how it goes.....

Sorry I don't know your first name I'm a new noter. I was wondering
if you could tell me a little about sky meadow. e.g. The membership
is $2000 which is fair. But does that mean you are a member when
it offically opens? do you know if they plan to keep it at about
2000 a year. Do you know if they plan to access every member a bond
fee say in a year or two. Do they have member guest and other
tournaments? Do members get first tee times on weekends? Sorry to
bomb you so much but we were considering joining andover cc but
played skymeadow last week and liked and are thinking of joining
there instead? I'm most concerned with the future initiation or
bond requierments that might happen i heard once that it was going
to be a 7000 bond for each member and 4-5000 a year to join.

Good questions. Many of the current members have the same questions.
As yet there are no answers. I'm taking it one step at a time.

As for this year, membership fee seems to decrease as the year goes
on. I think the fee is about $1500 for the remainder of the year.
Members get to make tee time about 4 days in advance and I think
the general public 3 days in advance.

We have tournaments every weekend (member/member, member/guest,
quota, skins, scrambles, etc.). We usually get a good turnout for
    these events.

Hope this answers your questions...if not call me or the pro (Mike)

I played Sky Meadow for the first time yesterday. What a course.
I am spoiled for life. I can't imagine how any course can possibly
have better conditions. Their tees are like most greens at other
courses. Greens were like velvet carpets. Fairways were perfect.
You always have a perfect lie (unless you land in the rough, luckily
I hit straight, 90% of the time, not great distance, but nice and
    straight).

Having to rent carts is kind of a hassle. I enjoy walking.

On that Par 3 that was mentioned in .3:

My husband, brother-in-law and myself started playing golf last
fall. My brother-in-law is 16 years old. He hit a 3 iron off the
tee and the ball landed on the green, 1 foot from the pin and rolled
a couple of inches and stopped. There was a tournement going on
and there were 3 women on that hole. You won a car if you got a
hole in one. They flipped out. I think that is the closest to
a hole in one on that hole that day.

Membership will be $2000 for an individual...a bit more for a

    11:00, and some other benefits.

Non-members can play, but must always rent a cart, can not play on
weekend mornings, and must pay greens fees and cart fees:

290 to 495N to Rt 3 North.

Take Rt 3 over the NH border, get off at exit 1 (Spit Brook Rd).
Turn left off the exit ramp (they're doing construction all over)
and go up Spitbrook Rd about 1.5 miles, it's on your left.

Nice course.

IMO, Sky Meadow IS a pretty nice course - especially for New Hampshire.
I try to play it once or twice a year. It's the kind of place where you
don't always have to hit (or want to hit) Driver. Wish they had a
    range.

The conditions are still very good, considering the lack of rain, and (last I
knew) carts could leave cartpaths at 90 deg angles. Prices are also up a bit
this year.
