545.1NO TOURNEY ON CABLEVISIONDARTS::DIAZCMG/CDG/SAMGMon Mar 13 1989 15:4527
Well I was thinking of mentionning it, so here I go.

In Massachusetts, Channel 4 (NBC) from Boston very rarely shows the
golf tourneys NBC broadcasts on Saturday and Sunday, they show local
programming. There is another NBC affilate station from, I think,
Rhode Island (Channel 10) that does transmit the play, BUT, my stupid
Cable TV company (Cablevision, previoulsy Adams Russell) doesn't show
channel 10, so I been missing a lot of the past tournaments.

I don't have external antenna, so finally I looked for an old
telescopic antenna and hooked it to my TV. Reception was terrible.
I guess I will send a letter to Cablevision. If anyone else is in
the same situation, maybe we can influence them. They do have a
channel where they select programming from various out-of-state
channels, including channel 10, all they have to do is show it on
Saturday and Sundays 4 to 6 PM.

Anyway, getting back to the tourney, when I finally got the signal,
Kite and Love were putting on the 18th.

Talk about Kite being tense, he wouldn't watch Love putt. And that
went on through the playoff. I don't know if that is common on him.

Well I think Kite finally deserved to win, he has been very close in
    the past.

Channel 5 the local ABC affiliate usually preempts golf for old movies
luckily Channel 9 in New Hampshire hardly ever preempts golf.

If you are a real golf die hard cable is an absolute minimum. It's
too bad your cable company doesn't carry Channel 10. This week is a
great cable golf weekend. Thursday & Friday USA is carring the first
& second rounds of the Player's Championship. I wonder is Channel 4
     preempting golf again this weekend.

I'll go you one worse --

My father in law is a much a golf nut as I am. He lives in Portland,
Maine, where the local affiliate NEVER shows the weekly tournaments.
They show.......HEE HAW!!! The station manager told him that HEE
HAW gets higher ratings than golf. Tells you something about
    demographics in Maine.

    I agree !!!

BUT, the Bangor affiliate does usually show golf...Luckily
I get USA and NESN and ESPN, although the Tucker Anthony Classic
is boring, it is golf..When it's -20, any golf is interesting...

The time has come for some type of organizing to influence local
programming away from pre-empting sports. The ironic thing is that
the networks thru their advertisers pay beaucoup $ for the golf
because the demographics of golf viewers spell big profit.
I doubt that the local tv stations care at all for demographics.
In fact I personally believe that these decisions to bypass sports
have other motivations (such as a personal dislike).
I have wondered if a boycott by golfers for example of channels
4 or 5's precious newscasts by golfers might get their attention and
give us (I have to say this, sorry) the last HEEHAW.

RE: < Note 545.6 by NBC::BREEN >

I agree with the idea of boycotting local stations if they don't carry the
network golf coverage. In fact I do this already. Because we have cable
if I am watching network programming I will generally watch the New Hampshire
or Rhode Island network affiliate.

My understanding of why the local station preempts is economic. They only
make $X when carrying the network programming but can charge local advertisers
$X+ when carrying old movies.

Larry

PS. Any significance to the fact you want network golf coverage & your node
name?

During the summer I live for Golf. And during the months I can't
play I just can't wait untill the weather is nice enough for me
to play. But in my opinion one of the most boring things to watch
on TV is golf. I love sports (almost all), but I hate to watch them
on TV. Watching them live is a little different. I'd rather watch
a good old movie any day then watch a golf tourney. This goes the
same for baseball, football. The only sport I get any enjoyment
out of on TV is College basketball.

...and I thought I was the only golfer who thought watching
golf on the tube was less exciting as watching paint dry...but
then again, old movies (especially musicals-yuck!) don't do much
    for me either..

545.10Golf Enjoyment = No Referees!!CBS::BREENMon Mar 27 1989 17:179
I just now have finally figured out why I enjoy golf on TV. It
is the simple fact that there are on referees. Therefore when 2
or more golfers go down to the wire on a Sunday I find it very enter-
    taining.

The role of referees in the NBA is particularly frustrating but
that is for another notes file.

    RE: .8, .9, etc.

All I can conclude is that you don't have children....the purpose of
TV golf is to let you catch a nap on the couch on Saturday or Sunday
afternoon. My kids, who will watch ALMOST anything on the tube, get
sick of golf after about 5 minutes. Then I rest in peace.

Paul, Try sending the kid off for a Nap on a sunday rather than
yourself. Works like a charm every time. Then take your nap after
the Golf is over. By then the kids are ready for another round of
this or that on the tube.
