486.0. "Starting a new tradition" by 32214::BURKE (Jeff Burke) Thu Dec 29 1988 19:08

The golf league that I belong to, the Backspinners Golf Association (BGA),
would like to start an annual match with another golf league in the New
England area. At first, we thought of advertising to find another league
that might be interested, but I figured this would be the best place to
see if there is any interest or information that could help.

What is the BGA and how is it organized? Well, we are a group of
44 males ranging in age from 29 to 70+, and ranging in handicap from
6 to 35 or so. As a rule we play one "official" tournament each month
beginning in April and culminating with our "Tournament of Champions"
event in October at Ferncroft. During the regular season we have
tournaments at Stow North, Marlboro, Cape Cod CC, Laconia CC, Pembroke,
Brook Meadow and Poquoy Brook. All of our tournaments are handicap
events so that everyone has a fair chance to win.

The BGA is fairly well organized. We have three officers which set
direction for the league. We publish a monthly newsletter where tournament
handicaps and all kinds of other statistics are tracked, tournament results
are reported on, rules are discussed, etc. Like all golfers, we enjoy the
sport. However, the most important aspect of the BGA for all members is
the friendly competition. The BGA tracks the "performance average" of each
player, and those players that perform the best over the season will earn
the honor to play for the BGA against the other league [*not* the players
with the lowest handicaps].

Ideally, the other league would be in the New England area and have
an interest in starting a *new* tradition between leagues. We are looking
for an annual championship "cup" type series between leagues that will
include between four and eight participants from each league.

Are there any other leagues out there that would be interested? Any
ideas re: what we are trying to do, or how to accommplish it? Your
comments would be greatly appreciated.
