473.0. "Tourney results 1989..." by MSEE::KELLEY (got to get the short game togther) Fri Dec 16 1988 12:33

In the latest Golf Digest there is a "PICK YOUR PRO SWEEPSTAKES".
Grang prize is an expense-paid trip to a 5 day Golf Digest school.
There are also 27 first place prizes, 10 volume set of Golf Digest
Schools Learning Library Videotapes. Basicly you try to pick the
winner of the selected 27 tournaments. I thought I would enter this
here so that those of you that don't get Golf Digest and want to
give it a shot can pick one up, I also thought I would enter the

the fun of it to see how we do...

Isn't anybody else going to go out on a limb and take a stab
at this? You don't have to pick from a selected list of names,
just pick a touring pro and go for it....! Come on...
473.3WORDS::NISKALAHoHoHo, into deeper debt I go!Mon Dec 19 1988 16:275
I'll stick my list in tomorrow. I've already got my response card
filled out and ready to mail in, from GD. I had thought about maybe
sticking Curtis' name for every tournament (he'd win a couple hopefully)
but that would absolutely eliminate me on ~90% of the rest. I do
remember picking Ken Green to win a couple back-to-back.

For anyone who picked Greg Norman to win any of the tournaments

correctly, Greg Norman is going to be taking some time off and will

Does anyone know exactly how Hale Irwin was hit in the eye during

everyone has a story or two.

Mine is at Green Meadow walking up the 16th on the left and somehow
"feeling" or (unbelievably but) seeming to HEAR a ball driven from
the 17th veering at my head. I simply dropped flat it went over

Yes, Kite played very well. On Sunday, every tee shot he hit
with a wood, found the fairway, except for one. That one, he hit
into a waste bunker on the right side. He proceeded to hit his
2nd shot from the waste bunker to a greenside pot bunker, where
he got up and down for his par and sand save. That 6 to 8 footer
for par on 16 really was a big putt. A great tournament, and I
thought the coverage was very good. Glad to see Nicklaus playing
on a Sunday again, even though he had a poor round.

And if Seve hadn't been so agressive (practicing for the Masters) and
put one ball out of bounds and the next one in the woods almost in
the same direction as the first one, and thus getting a double boggie

    	Tavo,

Just a little clarification. Seve didn't get a double boggie
on the 13th, he eagled the 13th birdied the 14th then got the
double boggie on the 15th. When he birdied the 14th it put
him in a four way tie for the lead... What a change of events
    	in three holes....!!!!!

Thanks for the clarification, Gene. I had to leave home around 3, so
I missed the end of the tournament and got some holes confused. I
knew he had done something on the 13th. BTW, the putt for the eagle
    in that hole was something!

Well, it came down to a playoff between the two top money
winners (up to the tourney) in the Nabisco Championship and
Tom Kite was victorious. Payne Stewart three putted the 18th
to drop from -9 to -8 and Kite birdied the 17th to go from
-7 to -8 to cause the playoff. The playoff went two holes,
each of them made par on the 16th and then Stewart boggied
    	the par 3 17th, missing a 4 footer. BTW, Payne shot a 29 on
the front 9 in the final round, birdied the first 5 holes and
made an eagle on one other hole on the front...!
